View Full Version : 60 photos from New York City

I was in New York from January 2-6. I was reunited with my wife, Brigette, for the first time since September (after our sudden marriage, we were almost immediately forced to live apart due to her prior commitment to spend the year teaching in France). Due to circumstances beyond my control (i.e., in-laws), we stayed at the Embassy Suites in Battery Park. Aside from having a view of the WTC site from the room (mitigated, however, by a view of 7 WTC and the Barclay-Vesey Building) and having to cross West St. to get to anything interesting, staying downtown gave me a new perspective on the city. This was a refreshing change from previous visits, when I stayed in Times Square (where I'm glad to say I didn't set foot this time).

This was not a really sightseeing-oriented trip (with a couple exceptions), but here's what I did see:

...And to continue the story, this was actually my last look at the United States for a while, because I am now in France until late March. I expect to have some pictures of Lille (and the surrounding area) and Brussels posted on the forum soon. :)

I've been waiting for what feels like forever for someone to finally take high-res zoomed in shots of the horizon at the northern part of manhattan island, bronx and jersey. You have basically sort of done that, thank you!

No strange encounters in parking garages, right? ;)

Looks like it was unseasonably warm there if there are people walking around in t-shirts in January. Great shots as always, Chris!

wait a second, you haven't seen your wife in months and when you finally do, you have to stay with her folks? i'm so sorry. :(

but hey, you sure got some nice pictures as a consolation. the shots of jersey city, ground zero activity and the time warner center are all excellent.

Yeah, the day we went to the park was ridiculously warm. It was cooler on the other days, but never anywhere near as cold as I expected.

Well, just in the same hotel. Thankfully on a different floor. On a different side of the building (they paid extra for a "harbor view", which was totally blocked by a building under construction... pwn3d :D ). I would have stayed downtown anyway, though, just not in Battery Park. It's nice enough, but it feels a little like New York pretending to be San Diego (the warm weather probably contributed to that).

For a trip that wasn't intended to include much sightseeing, you still got around and took some incredible shots, one of which is my desktop wallpaper. It's always interesting to see amazing photographers visit other cities and turn them out in beautiful ways. It's also great to hear you and your wife will be together once again. Looking forward to your shots from France, Upward.

No I didn't. But you're right.
I was watching the mess at the first setback. Looks like some dwellers of the tower are enjoying their terrace.

By the way, I'll be going to Paris some time next month...

If you live in Roubaix, that's just one little thing that you do any time, isn't it ?
Well, in any case, I hope you'll enjoy your visit.

I must say, Upward, that it was great seeing you in NYC and I enjoyed your thread...especially the shot out the window of the hotel. The reflection of the hotel's interior itself, including the tiny reflection of you and your tripod is particularly interesting. I also particularly enjoyed the photo from your hotel room, where the WTC site is brighter and more focused than any of the nearby buildings. I look forward to the posts you will put up while in Europe.
Oh, and as lovely as your wife (how old is she by the way?) is, perhaps you should focus more on architecture.
Best
