Here's a 28 storey tower in the suburbs of Victoria that has been on-hold for a year and a half. :(

http://gingert.net/images/finlayson/finlayson07.jpg

And a 14 storey down the street that is also on-hold.

Once this building is gone, the land will be transferred to the province and construction on the Thunder Bay District Consolidated Courthouse will begin in autumn. The construction of a hotel and two condominiums, all seven storeys, will begin at roughly the same time. There is another seven storey condo building proposed in the suburbs, but I haven't checked up on that. Renderings of the courthouse won't be published until autumn.

You barely see the different coloured accents (at least for now). Be cool to see entire buildings clad in red, purple, and yellow at least from street level. The unit owners may have a different opinion.

caltrane74

Thought this deserved its own post.

Barrelyards, Uptown Waterloo...soil clearing is well underway.

Definitely click on this link. This thing rivals some of the projects in Toronto and Vancouver in terms of scale.

http://www.auburndev.com/index.php?cID=126

Phase 1 includes a hotel, condos, and apartment buildings (total of 1006 units of residential over the whole project). The twin office towers come later (currently, a lot of new office inventory is coming onto the market across the region).

Some more projects across the tri-cities include:

Arrow Lofts, downtown Kitchener

For a long time, not much of anything was happening with this project and there were a lot of issues with soil contamination, followed by the recession.

Now, there is significant renovation underway and an underground parking garage is being built beside the building.

What you see here is just Phase 1. Phase 2 will include a 16 storey condominium.

A sales centre is expected to be established in the fall.

Dont get me wrong, the tower is great however, I hope Shangri-la Toronto is on another level compared to this. I'm not keen on the random spandrel glass. It doesn't seem to work here. I'm also not a fan of curtain wall/ window-wall blends on a four sided lot. It just adds another unnecessary layer and rarely do they compliment each other. Use one or the other. The concrete core is a little weird too.

vanman
Jun 11, 2010, 10:28 PM
^ I agree with you about the glazing.

As for the concrete cores, I'm guessing it has to do with the extreme narrowness of the site that can only fully be appreciated from the air:
http://imgur.com/tiR8F.jpg

They could have been easily hidden but the plan is for them to be illuminated by LEDs which could turn out very cool:

The solid cores at the two towers will be animated by the introduction of a random horizontal pattern in the concrete achieved by a series of reveals. It is planned to further activate the patterned core walls with an LED cove lighting system running the height of the building that will further accentuate the texture of this wall. It is being considered that this lighting system may be further developed to react to external inputs that will result in changing the colour and pattern of the light and that this may become the project’s public art contribution.

That is one narrow site. The LED sounds interesting as well as I do like the horizontal bands.

The two collapses is ridiculous and demo sites extending onto public sidewalks happen all the time here.

The crane on the left was just installed today. It's building the new luxury hotel as part of the Barrelyards development.

http://www.decadegroup.ca/images/domain1.jpg

Which is part of this development.

Once this is done, it will, on it's own, be the #1 skyline for Waterloo region.

(see link below for photos)

The crane on the right is the Balsillie School of International Affairs...a new post-secondary campus in the uptown core.

For all you steel lovers out there, the new Ottawa convention center is off the charts! These pics don't show the scale of it. Standing on the street and looking up, it's a beast! (Look at the size of those workers in there!)

(All photos taken by me today on my iPhone)

When finished the front of this will look like a giant crystal egg.
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1386/4722177654_1194fbc33a_b.jpg

This is only half of the building. The rest goes back to the left a hundred or more feet.

Speaking of renderings of large public sector buildings, the rendering for the Waterloo Regional Consolidated Courthouse was just released yesterday.

Not really sure how I feel about this one. The design is blah. It adds a bit of density to the area, which doesn't hurt. I'm just glad it's on the edge of downtown, not on a prominent corner.

Super-Colossal-Update of the Ottawa Convention Centre. I took these today with my point and shoot Olympus, hoping to get better detail than my iPhone.

The panos were all created using Autostitch found at www.autostitch.net

First a pano taken from the same spot the above renders would be from:

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1067/4733978376_39b06a372d_b.jpg

Now a close up with a canal tour boat passing by.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1366/4733340161_9dc92a760e_b.jpg

From the Laurier Bridge, looking toward the MacKenzie King Bridge and showing the O.C.C's proximity to Parliament Hill and the Peace Tower on the left. (The Chateau Laurier hotel is center, behind the OCC in this picture.)

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1145/4733336895_616ebcfc89_b.jpg

Close up of that shot:

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1015/4733337943_d7a8f00a41_b.jpg

Closer still. This time from the MacKenzie King Bridge. Note the framing for the glazing is moving along quite nicely.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1069/4733338903_963c8cd087_b.jpg

Close up of the guys working on installing the framework for the curved front glazing. These photos don't show the mass and scale of this building. The first floor ceiling, which they are working near, will be 70 feet (21 meters) over your head.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1357/4733980740_2f8e7567b9_b.jpg

Here is the North end of the "Egg" shaped front of the building being worked on. Get a load of the size of the steel beams and columns compared to that worker!!!!!

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1235/4733342493_f76d4da51b_b.jpg

Look at the interior of this part of the OCC. Can you get a sense of the scale of that one beam? There is a man in the cherry picker in the foreground and that is a staircase on the interior next to the beam. It must be 7 feet high!

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1131/4733343537_b955c556b8_b.jpg

Top to bottom pano from the MacKenzie King Bridge.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1365/4733343801_91a48e31e4_b.jpg

Finally, a 25 image pano from the street below the facade. (Colonel By Drive)

No, only to Iceland.

A few of those routes are only gas-up stops in Iceland, which continue on to London, so yes, you can get direct flights to Europe from Winnipeg :)

In addition, with the expanded terminal capacity, more non-stop US and International destinations, including Europe will likely be added with the increase in passenger traffic.
