Good to hear of all the old brick buildings in Winnipeg that are being converted to residential. Maybe after a few years of this happening, more new buildings will start being built as people start demanding more housing in the downtown area.

Mississauga civic square revamp hits 'right notes'
January 27, 2009

http://media.thestar.topscms.com/images/13/de/daebf05c468ea8cd28edf3646a4f.jpeg

PHINJO GOMBU
URBAN AFFAIRS REPORTER

Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion is one of the first to acknowledge that the civic square in front of her beloved city hall desperately needs a dramatic – and potentially expensive – makeover.

Residents of her city, she says, often visit the pleasant downtowns of the old communities incorporated into Mississauga, such as Streetsville, Clarkson and Port Credit. But getting them to hang out in the official civic square is a trick.

"It's very difficult for us to get people to come here," McCallion acknowledged last week after she and other councillors got a sneak preview of an ambitious $40 million project that aims to do what the initial square didn't do – become a place to which people gravitate.

Colossal truss installedPosted Thursday, August 12, 2010 9:22 AM
http://myuminfo.umanitoba.ca/Domains/myuminfo_umanitoba_ca/Tools/100/Images/body_image_23084_-1685263308.jpg60 tons of steel is put in place on August 12. Photo by Chris Reid. The new University of Manitoba Pembina Hall student residence hit a milestone this week when one of the largest steel trusses ever installed in Manitoba was erected.
The mammoth piece of steel was assembled on the ground and measures 160 feet long, 17 feet high and eight feet wide. It weighs 60 tons and has taken eight days to assemble the six individual pieces that comprise this colossal truss.
This truss was erected by two 300 ton cranes simultaneously navigating over one building and beside another.
The Pembina Hall project started on February 1, 2010, and has been a happy sight for students anxious to have a new residence on campus.
The new structure will be 13 storeys high and, adding to the building’s beauty and complexity, it will span over an existing two-storey building.
It is scheduled to be completed by August 2011.

Some panes being readied for installation.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4074/4910902510_c47714d9a0_b.jpg

Vertical panorama showing glass installation progress. Very few of the triangles are exactly the same shape so a little planning has to be in order and I imagine each of the pieces is carefully numbered.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4082/4911137418_53df5ac156_b.jpg

Close-up detail. The glazing is more transparent than I imagined it would be. I thought in daytime it would look more mirrored and only transmit light through at night. Oh well, I'm liking the smokey tint of the glass so far.

I know you are being facetious and implying that the OCC is very European and unexpected in Ottawa (and Ottawa thanks you for the compliment), but that is no river. That is the Rideau Canal, for those unfamiliar with the capital. It flows to the Ottawa river just out of frame to the left, right beside the Parliament buildings (also out of frame in the above shot).

This aerial below shows the canal flowing into the Ottawa river:

For those planners/city slickers/etc scared of height, I gotta say that the height of this building contrasting to its neighbours is truly startling and awe inspiring! I think it works brilliantly, and brashly says "Welcome to the big city Mr Toronto the Good"--more please!!!

For what it's worth, here's the pit from the failed Radius development in Victoria. It's been like this for about two years now.

A couple of six and seven storey residential buildings, Hudson Walk, are now proposed to rise here. http://hudsonwalk.ca/

Here is the construction site of a 10 story building located on parlement hill in Quebec city. The company responsible of the project had asked a permit for a much higher construction but it was refused...as everything else in the historic district.

Just biking by, so I thought I'd grab a few shots of the Ottawa Convention Centre. Kind of hot and hazy today (32C) so the pics are a little fuzzy. Oh and I have a crap point-and-shoot camera! LOL

The glazing is progressing slowly but it's starting to reflect other parts of the downtown. You can just make out the reflection of the Peace Tower in the glass.

So as of earlier this week greater Halifax (Halifax, Bedford, & Dartmouth) has 10 construction cranes at 9 different sites building projects from 4-19 floors in height. For a city of 400'000 this is a good sign of strong growth. Here are some photos of those cranes taken by me over the summer.

I spoke with the head at Fares Realty last week about advertising.. but she was broke or had allocated her budget.. But I'll do a nice write up for them in the spring...

I'm gonna make that Halifax Project go worldwide, with ads on the iPad and everything, it's gonna blow up.

I think i have stated this before, but i really don't understand the - when to use a tower crane in building construction. Here in Winnipeg it seems like they rarely use tower cranes.

Every one of those Halifax construction shots has a tower crane. With the exception of the Trillium job (19 stories) every one of those projects would have used a crawler crane here in Winnipeg. I have also noticed this in Calgary when i have been there. They will use a tower crane to erect a 5 or 6 storey building.

We seem to be able to build everything up to around 20 stories with mobile cranes. Not meaning to hijack this thread, just curious if anyone had any insight?

......by the way, i love all the construction going on in the Halifax area. I enjoyed my visit there a year ago and look forward to coming back.

Zeroing in on the box - originally planned to house two floors worth of HVAC and be sheathed in red aluminum, it now appears that only half of the lower floor of the box will be required for the equipment, cutting the architectural exclamation mark down to the impact of a comma:

On the left side of this photo you can see the site of where a new long term care facility will be built. In the upper middle there is a new, fairly small, condo building which is just finishing construction.

As well the area where the coloured buildings are and further left will be redeveloped into a mixed use subdivision and construction has also begun on a new facility for the military though it can't be seen from this photo.

When the Fort Edmonton Footbridge and Trails are completed by the end of the year, they’ll open up a whole new part of the river valley for cycling and walking. Construction on the bridge is nearly complete, and the trails along Patricia Ravine are done.

The $24-million bridge is southwest of Fort Edmonton Park and below the new Wolf Willow Ridge subdivision on the north side of the North Saskatchewan River. It will link the multi-use trail recently constructed next to Fort Edmonton Park with new ones on the other side of the water.

Love this shot and the treatment. Looks like an archeological restoration of an ancient temple in the desert or something. :D

From LikeHamilton....

I cannot see this finished by Christmas. ¾ of the centre lane has not been started yet. They have not even laid the concrete base that has to be down before they put in the plastic heating pipes for that part of the road. There are poles and control boxes still in the middle of the road that need to be moved.

Here are some pictures from Oct 13th.

The office part first phase of the Lang Tannery development is nearing completion.

The following pictures are of the new offices for Desire2Learn, a Kitchener-based high tech company.

This is the same building that Google is establishing its Canadian headquarters in.
