I thought The Bow was 250-260m??
Originally 247m, but they cut a floor off due to shadowing restrictions so its now 236m.
A Four Crane Building! Amazing
I have never seen a four crane building under construction in Toronto. - Maybe for Scotia Plaza...but I watched that one go up from my bedroom window as a kid. And cant remember how many cranes there were cause of the distance from my home. And I was to young to go and check it out in person.
Some are expecting that at least 1 project (Centennial) in Calgary may have 4 (or possibly 5) due to the sheer size of the site. And the Bow will probably have 3 or 4. We already have a 3 crane setup for the new tower at the Foothills hospital (which is finally starting to build floors, they constructed the elevator shafts up 9 or so floors before they started on the actual floor plates)

I'd expect 3 or 4 cranes for Penny Lane too. That's not a small site either.

RBC is a small site however its hemmed in by other buildings so it makes it easier to use more luffing jib cranes (angled boom upwards) than fewer of the more common cranes attached with long horizontal booms. Tower cranes aren't exactly in short supply here as many are brought up from the US even to build a one level concrete parkade under wood or metal framed stacked townhouses

Hey vanman, it is just an opinion on the aesthetics. I am not calling your twin sister ugly so maybe it would be more constructive to show me a picture of the hidden side.. Here are a couple pics taken a day or two ago by Delirium that he posted in the Vancouver Construction thread. The first image is of the Shangri-La and the second is one of the towers of the Spectrum development. Based on floor count, I think the height of the Shangri-La is now almost 1/3 of its final height, or at least 30%.

The Ritz has long been rumoured to be the hotel operator of the proposed (50 story+) twist building across from Shangri-la
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/vannmann/113320W20Georgia.jpg
Then there is the proposed( 50 story) Hotel georgia , as well as the under construction (48 story)Fairmont Pacific Rim.
I should note most of these are condo/hotel combinations except for the Hotel Georgia.

I hope they revisit the twist idea.. it is getting a bit hackneyed after Malmo so long ago.
Is it a serious proposal or just a rumour? Is it up for approval?
vanman
Apr 12, 2007, 11:39 AM
^Yeah actually I think it might have already got preliminary approval. I understand your opinion on the whole twist thing cause of malmo but it in this case the building is different . The building only rotates 45degrees from the ground to the roof. Plus it has straight angled lines to create the illusion of a more dramatic twist.
Taller Better
Apr 12, 2007, 2:42 PM
Maybe it is just the angle shown that looks awkward, but the whole twistie or pseudo-twistie thing has been done a lot internationally and as a trend is probably on its last legs.
raggedy13
Apr 12, 2007, 9:11 PM
^I feel it will at least add some variety and a unique element to Vancouver's current stock of buildings that currently doesn't exist. I think it is wrong to assume that just because a building twists means it is somehow unoriginal. That's like saying cylindrical buildings are all unoriginal copies of whatever the first one was or all communication/observation towers are all the same ;) etc. The twist is just one of numerous design elements of the building. Besides, the way this buildings twists is quite different in appearance than the Turning Torso which looks rather awkward and inorganic in comparison to this (not that it isn't a nice building though).
Of course there are other cities making similar buildings but so what. Every city has dozens of plain glass boxy office towers but nobody bats an eye when another one of those goes up. As far as I'm concerned this will be a unique building to Canada and to Vancouver's respective region in NA so what's the harm. It should end up being a beautiful building in its own right and the fact that it will be the 2nd tallest in the city makes it all the better. Anyways, there is a possibility that the final design will end up looking more like this...

Here's Haliguy's photo of Gladstone Ridge (tower 1 of 2), not very impressive when compared to some of some of the other buildings here, but it's definitely an improvement to the toxic warehouse that used to be on the site. An identical tower is under construction just to the north (to the left of the picture, not visible), along with some houses and a 7-storey senior's residence.

The holes for Jamieson and Centennial are freakin huge!

Yep. Centennial has something like 4 or 5 levels of U/G parking, so its huge hole will be comparable to what The Bow's will be in terms of depth. And possibly in terms of overall size as well.

Except that it doesn't span across a busy street :D
I think The Bow's hole will be bigger, because it'll take up the entire block between 5th and 6th, as well as at least part of the block between 6th and 7th. It's going to be freaking massive, although Centennial's hole is pretty huge too.

Same here (for the most part anyway) downtown in both cities are going to become really comparable, aside from the fact that Calgary is mostly commercial and Vancouver is mostly residential.

Spread out? I would say the opposite. Vancouver's high-rises are concentrated in the downtown core which is only a few square kilometres in size.

^ That looks as dense or denser then Toronto and Montreal, JohnnyC c'mon you can't find an aerial photo of Calgary that shows us that kind of density. Calgary has a kick ass skyline but to call it the densest in Canada is just a typical my dick is bigger even though it's not comment to make. It's impressive but compact, where Vancouver's goes on and on and on. A skyline doesn't need a a few tall office towers to be great, it can be the best just by having a huge amount of mid and highrises. This is why Vancouver is one of the densest around.
I'm not going to sit here and tell you which skyline is best, to each there own, but when it comes to density, Calgary is not the hands down winner in this country by a long shot.

I stand corrected, i just remember it being a little more spread out the last time I was there, I stand by my statement that once the Beltline really starts to develope, Calgary and Vancouver (which have a similar sized downtown area) will have a really comparable downtown.

Calgary's Skyline IS very dense, it is about 9 blocks at the widest, and about 12 blocks at the longest. That is all changing though, TO definitely has the most deceiving skyline, and I'm not sure about Montreal.

a block with four point towers appears denser than a block with two bulkier office blocks
Where Vancouver wins are the lowrise parts of the skyline which are generally 3 to 5 storeys streetwalls compared to the parking lots and 1 to 2 storeys in others

Agreed, but then again, they have a lack of space in the core, where other cities like Toronto and Calgary have the space to grow outward. Which as far as I can tell IS the reason such developement occurs. Hong Kong and NYC have a simular development pattern. when you run out of land the only place to grow is up :D

raggedy13
May 12, 2007, 6:48 PM
From what I've read previously, they are supposed to be solar-charged lighting panels, but we're still debating that since if they are supposed to be lights they aren't functional yet. So far they're just really reflective and change colours depending on what angle you look at them kind of like a hologram - mostly greenish to purplish/redish. Personally I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they'll light up brightly at night once the building is complete.
