SekishikiMeikaiHa just posted this shot of the RBC Waterside Centre construction site in Halifax. It is not very large, but it is an interesting project because it involves the preservation of some heritage building facades and because it is built on fill (I think the old buildings were on pilings).
The building next door, Morse's Teas, is a bit of a landmark in Halifax and was built in 1840. It's also known as the Jerusalem Warehouse because it replaced the Jerusalem Coffee House which operated since the 1700's.

One of your city's greatest new proposals. I wish Calgary had a University campus DT (Bow Valley College doesn't count). I know there's been talk about moving ACAD to the new East Village, but that was a long time ago.
Anyways, good on Ryerson for commissioning such an awesome design.
EDIT: NM, I just remembered the U of C's new urban Campus. It's a retrofit of an old 60's health care centre.

kph06 took some great pictures of the RBC Waterside crane going up in Halifax. That part of town has an interesting mix of old and new and is fairly built up. I think the foreground in the first photo is the King's Wharf construction site. An impressive amount of construction is happening around the Halifax area right now. Update:
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8160/7298797348_0ae817c9dd_b.jpg
When completed the three buildings will have ground floor retail in the old facades and then a couple levels of office space above with setbacks.
The building to the right is a real gem. It's a Chicago-style steel-frame building from 1894 -- probably one of the oldest in Canada.

The Citadel Hotel project is now under construction -- they're working on building footings while they demolish the remnants of the old hotel. They'll be constructing 3 highrises concurrently over the next 2 years, so it will be one of the biggest construction projects in Halifax. Unlike the new hotel, the two new hotel towers and apartment building will be built up to the street and will have ground-floor retail, so they'll be a big improvement (renderings: http://www.chamberlainipd.com/portfolio-sleep-homewoodcitadel.php).

I do believe this will be the largest single project in Halifax for at least the last 2 decades... correct?
Depends on what you mean by that. There have been other recent projects downtown with a higher dollar value (NSP HQ). King's Wharf I guess technically has 4 towers under construction right now and the multi-phase development is quite large, but that is in Dartmouth. Gladstone Ridge on the Halifax side was also pretty large (2x12 plus a midrise building and some rowhouses). There are a bunch of suburban projects and for some they are building 4 or more towers concurrently (Panorama is 4x12 floors and I think they are under construction). There's something like 23 cranes up in Halifax right now, and 3,000 apartment units under construction.
This hotel project is still big though, and it's definitely the first in a long time where they've had 3 towers under construction concurrently in downtown Halifax. It is rare to have a construction site that covers that much land downtown since most of the blocks are small. The corner is also fairly prominent and is at the margins of the downtown area.
Chadillaccc
Jun 29, 2012, 5:03 PM
I just mean for the downtown peninsula I guess. But I see what you mean, I did forget about Kings wharf there for a minute. But I just mean because all 3 of these will be UC at once. Pretty impressive for a city of only 400 000. Especially considering all the other projects you listed :)
someone123
Jun 29, 2012, 5:08 PM
Yeah, it is quite crazy. There is far more going on now than there ever was when I lived there. The norm during the past decade has been maybe a couple of highrises at a time plus a handful of smaller projects. There were some roadblocks when it came to certain projects and it seemed like parts of the city were stuck in neutral, but now just about every part is improving.
Part of it is the same shift toward multi-unit and urban development that other cities have seen. There's also an element of pent-up demand because some planning changes have happened to facilitate urban infill, and there were the shipbuilding announcement lately and major offshore announcements.
It will be interesting to see what the city looks like in a few years.
Chadillaccc
Jun 29, 2012, 5:29 PM
In ten years Halifax will look like a city of 750 000 or more, even though it will likely only be like 500 000 by then.
Innsertnamehere
Jun 29, 2012, 5:38 PM
too bad. I wish halifax was closer to a million... canada has no major east cost cities, and I feel Halifax would be an awesome city for that to happen!
Chadillaccc
Jun 29, 2012, 5:59 PM
It will certainly happen, just not over night.
For being only 400 000 people, Halifax has a massive skyline and feels much larger than it is... and I would guess that after it hits 500 000 and much more development is spurred, I'm sure it will feel like a city of a million by the mid 2020s.

Population doesn't necessarily mean a lot. Halifax is limited in a lot of ways by its small size but then again plenty of awful cities have a million or more people.
The best thing about Halifax is that it's got great "bones" and a sense of place. It has inherited a wealth of public space, landmarks, and heritage buildings that can be leveraged to create interesting neighbourhoods you'd never be able to build from scratch today. It is a lot easier in 2012 to fill in the condo towers than it is to invent history and character.

I saw the glass being installed this past friday and I was impressed how the two shades reflected one another adding a whole other dimension to the building. Nice touch.
And of course, I love how the glass seamlessly reflects the old NY style Mount Sinai mini skyscraper across the street.

Pretty nice pedestrian bridge under construction (almost over) in old Cap-Rouge, a subburb of Quebec City which is almost as old as Quebec itself. On the right in the first picture, you can partly see the Tracel, a very big train bridge which I've posted pics of in the past.

A new neighbourhood is slowly emerging on the site where a cement plant used to stand. It is obviously suburbia but at least there is a certain density... as far as Quebec City is concerned!

Not a bad thing, just coulda been something a bit more interesting.
If he had sold to Daniels we could have had a master planned half block with Cinema Towers and TIFF Towers. Possibly larger towers, or more interesting podium layout.
Ah well, he ain't selling, and it would be hard to find a buyer for this strip of land, can't do anything with it anyways. Just gonna be a glorified driveway in the end.
WhipperSnapper
Jul 6, 2012, 3:14 PM
Cinema takes up too much real estate already. I don't know why you want it to be even bigger. Festival is an exception however, the rest of the site would of been many times more successful without podiums and more thinner towers.
Five to eight storeys is far too low. The site needs something that visually impacts instead of appearing as an extension of the podiums. Theatre Park is just down the street. I don't see why Caltrane thinks the site is unbuidable. It has the same frontage. Depth is less important.

The thig is that cinima tower is rather close to then lot line.. I would've concerned on distance between the high rises. I could certianly see a 10-20 floor building there though. Just not a 40 floor.

This one is pretty interesting: it used to be a church but it is currently retrofitted to welcome a new library. It is difficult to see from these pictures but a new building is being constructed behind the church and it will subsequently be linked to the future library. It doesn't seem that cool right now but it is a very interesting project.

This one's not actually being built by the Chinese government, or even a Chinese developer.
While I bet the residents of this development will be mostly Chinese, people do tend to forget about the 65% of Markham that is non-Chinese. The South Asian community (especially the Tamil community) in particular has been growing very rapidly in South Markham. It will be interesting to see what the 2011 census results look like for these types of demographics.

Is it fair to say, that recently (such as the past 5 to 10 years) London, Ontario has been building taller towers than either Victoria, BC or Halifax?
Is that fair? ; cause to me it seems that way.

It's totally fair and totally True. One London Place is over 20 years old and it alone is significantly taller than anything in Victoria and over a dozen meters taller than Fenwick Tower in Halifax.
The renaissance towers in London are even much taller than anything in Victoria and any residential in Halifax.
EDIT: Fenwick Tower is residential and is a little bit taller than the Ren twins in London. My bad.

New crane popping up right now at downtown Hamilton.....
Should be three cranes within the same site by the end of 2012.
Yay Hamilton!

Give Halifax 5 more years. Lot's in the works here. We are gaining back ground from the silly NIMBY's that have had their way for the last 15 years.

Definitely! Am I right in my guess that the Fenwick Tower redevelopment is going to push the tower over 100 meters?

I know this is a skyscraper forum but does height really matter that much when you're talking about a 90 m vs 100 m building? My favourite new projects in Halifax aren't the tallest ones, they're architecturally interesting ones like the library and waterfront power plant conversion.
Victoria likewise has some nice new buildings and I doubt many people there would want the slab type buildings in London.
Fenwick might hit 100 meters since they are adding a couple of floors and a decorative roof. The tallest of the King's Wharf towers is listed as 109 meters in the diagrams for Halifax and that one's supposed to start up next year -- the designs we've seen so far are also pretty good, and the building's setting will be pretty dramatic.

Gradual change. If a building that is 7 storeys goes up in a neighborhood and then a few years later another one. After awhile 7-9 don't stir up as much controversy. That's sort of what is happening. 10 storeys yesterday, 14 tomorrow and before you know 19-20 are actually being built. Halifax is many years away from 40 storey being the norm but it will happen.
