I've never seen foam sprayed onto a retaining wall like that - is it because it leaked?

Josh, why are there no windows in the base of 5 West? Arriva's looking good and what is the Water Centre?

The first floor does. The second and third floors are parking. They couldn't do it all underground because the water table is high in this location (close to the river). It will have fake windows (Like in the first phase - you can see in the distance) to make it so you can't tell it actually a blank wall.

Water Centre is a municipal office for employees of City water works.

Now for something from one of Canada's smaller cities - here are a few of the bigger projects on the go in North Bay. All of these pics were taken within the last few weeks.

Phase one of Marina Point - the adjacent 6 storey 2nd phase will be starting soon.

The new 100 room Holiday Inn Express is just getting started, and another 200 room hotel is slated to start construction right next door.

you have pictures of most of those...i know you just took those pictures today, but the first one isnt even a construction site.

calgarians....is Centrium as good in real life as the renderings made it look?

I think most of us are sitting on the fence right now. No doubt it is a great looking building. From some angles it looks really dark and in others it looks really light. The base is also only starting to form up. I think what will make this project is the (White?) LED strip on the corner of 3rd Street and 6th Avenue SW.

Uh, the LED strip has also changed since the night rendering was made. It now has this criss-crossing pattern instead of just being a pole.

Here's a look so far:

That square is going to be so bloody bright when the ads go up, it'll be a cool spot at night. And is it just me or does Centennial place not resemble Bay and Adelaides last design?

Here's a picture Haliguy posted of a new crane put up across from the Commons yesterday, on the site of the "Armoury Square" condo building (10 stories). Behind it, in the background, you can see the new Gladstone Ridge tower (12 stories, under construction), which will soon get an identical twin.

For sure - that area is really bright now and this will just about double the amount of crazy bright advertisements.

Although, is it me or is construction taking a long time? I feel like I've been walking through those blue walls for as long as I can remember - and I have a decent memory!

After Shangri-la, RBC Centre is the second tallest building under construction in Canada with a concrete foundation. - Its total hieght will be 180 meters or some 620 ft I believe. (isn't this that so old school - 2002 SSP styles. - not under construction until the foundation is poured)

B-A is taller but it is still being excavated/site prepped.

yep - 1997

(I shed a tear when they cut the billboard off the hoarding along Yonge and almost wet myself when a gap appeared in the hoarding itself but unfortunately, it was only temporary )

The three cranes visible in this pic represent three different towers going up. From closest to furthest they are the Flatiron, the Ritz, and the Sapphire, with the Melville visible in the background. That's four towers U/C next to and across the street from one another ranging from 300ft to 464ft.

Mellville and Shaw are nice towers.

Some stuff being built in my town, Dundas (part of Hamilton)

Spencer Creek Village Condos

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k28/segaert/oddstuff/00248.jpg

This is the third of four, here's roughly what it will look like, each building is a slightly different design

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k28/segaert/oddstuff/00250.jpg

Amica at Dundas, retirement community

This looks really good, here's a rendering I got from their sales office:
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k28/segaert/oddstuff/amica.jpg

The construction is moving quickly
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k28/segaert/oddstuff/00246.jpg

Rents at Amica will range from $2700 to $4650 per month, not cheap!

Here's a look so far:

http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/9692/centriumplace5ys.th.png (http://img409.imageshack.us/my.php?image=centriumplace5ys.png)http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/8499/centriumplace26hy.th.png (http://img409.imageshack.us/my.php?image=centriumplace26hy.png)http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/479/centrium026yv.th.jpg (http://img409.imageshack.us/my.php?image=centrium026yv.jpg)http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/3483/textures6thave3nj.th.jpg (http://img409.imageshack.us/my.php?image=textures6thave3nj.jpg)

I wish all the construction galleries were formatted like this, with small thumbnails, and we could choose which ones to display in full...

I have highspeed Internet, but it can still be slow going with huge digiphotos on the pages.

I did a hasty labelling job of the contruction sites in this recent photo of False Creek North/Yaletown that was posted in the Vancouver Construction thread.

A number of the projects involve multiple buildings, such as the Olympic Village that will have a dozen or so plus a private sector buildout of another couple dozen.

I also added a crude approximation of the Canada Line bored tunnel under False Creek and the one visible station.

There are two more photos that I'm going to label but I want to do that at home using photoshop and not paint, which is all I have available to me at work.

Originally 247m, but they cut a floor off due to shadowing restrictions so its now 236m.

Some are expecting that at least 1 project (Centennial) in Calgary may have 4 (or possibly 5) due to the sheer size of the site. And the Bow will probably have 3 or 4. We already have a 3 crane setup for the new tower at the Foothills hospital (which is finally starting to build floors, they constructed the elevator shafts up 9 or so floors before they started on the actual floor plates)

RBC is a small site however its hemmed in by other buildings so it makes it easier to use more luffing jib cranes (angled boom upwards) than fewer of the more common cranes attached with long horizontal booms. Tower cranes aren't exactly in short supply here as many are brought up from the US even to build a one level concrete parkade under wood or metal framed stacked townhouses

Hey vanman, it is just an opinion on the aesthetics. I am not calling your twin sister ugly so maybe it would be more constructive to show me a picture of the hidden side.. Whistler, you have put us all to shame with that outstanding update.. many thanks. I am disappointed that Planet Kensington is turning into a chainstore bakery. I read about it and it sounds pretty suburban.

Do you know the name of the Bakery? I'd love to contact the owner and buy the Planet Kesignton Sign and hang it as art on my wall. I'm actually surprised none of the punks have climbed up theer at night to steal it. Plantes been closed now for two weeks.

I'll miss watching the Z-Rays play there on Saturday afternoons with $2.50 stubbies, glad to find out they now play a block from me at the Smiling Budah. R.I.P Planet Kensington.

I think it is "Cobbs" or a name something like that. The article I read said it was a pretty dreary run of the mill bakery chain from Vancouver, I believe. I'm getting a mental image of dreaded, leaden wholewheat croissants made with nourishing non transfat canola oil but I don't really know. Try googling it.

Cool pix, Whistler and thanks for including Planet Kensington in the Development updates! :)

Here are a couple pics taken a day or two ago by Delirium that he posted in the Vancouver Construction thread. The first image is of the Shangri-La and the second is one of the towers of the Spectrum development. Based on floor count, I think the height of the Shangri-La is now almost 1/3 of its final height, or at least 30%.

The Ritz has long been rumoured to be the hotel operator of the proposed (50 story+) twist building across from Shangri-la
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/vannmann/113320W20Georgia.jpg

Then there is the proposed( 50 story) Hotel georgia , as well as the under construction (48 story)Fairmont Pacific Rim.

I should note most of these are condo/hotel combinations except for the Hotel Georgia.

I hope they revisit the twist idea.. it is getting a bit hackneyed after Malmo so long ago.
Is it a serious proposal or just a rumour? Is it up for approval?

vanman
04-12-2007, 12:39 PM
^Yeah actually I think it might have already got preliminary approval. I understand your opinion on the whole twist thing cause of malmo but it in this case the building is different . The building only rotates 45degrees from the ground to the roof. Plus it has straight angled lines to create the illusion of a more dramatic twist.

Taller Better
04-12-2007, 03:42 PM
Maybe it is just the angle shown that looks awkward, but the whole twistie or pseudo-twistie thing has been done a lot internationally and as a trend is probably on its last legs.

raggedy13
04-12-2007, 10:11 PM
^I feel it will at least add some variety and a unique element to Vancouver's current stock of buildings that currently doesn't exist. I think it is wrong to assume that just because a building twists means it is somehow unoriginal. That's like saying cylindrical buildings are all unoriginal copies of whatever the first one was or all communication/observation towers are all the same ;) etc. The twist is just one of numerous design elements of the building. Besides, the way this buildings twists is quite different in appearance than the Turning Torso which looks rather awkward and inorganic in comparison to this (not that it isn't a nice building though).

Of course there are other cities making similar buildings but so what. Every city has dozens of plain glass boxy office towers but nobody bats an eye when another one of those goes up. As far as I'm concerned this will be a unique building to Canada and to Vancouver's respective region in NA so what's the harm. It should end up being a beautiful building in its own right and the fact that it will be the 2nd tallest in the city makes it all the better. Anyways, there is a possibility that the final design will end up looking more like this...

The Shaw tower really gives Vancouver the most destinctive skyline, I have seen in a long while.. much more distinctinve than other skylines in the country excluding Toronto ( because of the CN Tower)

Here's Haliguy's photo of Gladstone Ridge (tower 1 of 2), not very impressive when compared to some of some of the other buildings here, but it's definitely an improvement to the toxic warehouse that used to be on the site. An identical tower is under construction just to the north (to the left of the picture, not visible), along with some houses and a 7-storey senior's residence.

Except that it doesn't span across a busy street :D

I think The Bow's hole will be bigger, because it'll take up the entire block between 5th and 6th, as well as at least part of the block between 6th and 7th. It's going to be freaking massive, although Centennial's hole is pretty huge too.

Calgary has a kick ass skyline but to call it the densest in Canada is just a typical my dick is bigger even though it's not comment to make. It's impressive but compact, where Vancouver's goes on and on and on. A skyline doesn't need a a few tall office towers to be great, it can be the best just by having a huge amount of mid and highrises. This is why Vancouver is one of the densest around.

I'm not going to sit here and tell you which skyline is best, to each there own, but when it comes to density, Calgary is not the hands down winner in this country by a long shot.

Agreed, but then again, they have a lack of space in the core, where other cities like Toronto and Calgary have the space to grow outward. Which as far as I can tell IS the reason such developement occurs. Hong Kong and NYC have a simular development pattern. when you run out of land the only place to grow is up :D

So far they're just really reflective and change colours depending on what angle you look at them kind of like a hologram - mostly greenish to purplish/redish. Personally I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they'll light up brightly at night once the building is complete.
