Figured this one might deserve it's own thread. 103 ave and 105 street.
Brinsmead Ziola Kennedy Architecture
Not sure where the name comes from...

This looks very nice! It looks about 22 stories, is that right?
But something's kind of strange, though. I've checked out the website of Brinsmead Ziola Kennedy Architecture (http://www.bzka.com/index.php), and there isn't any info on the Q. Same goes for the Emporis.com website as well.

Just goes to show you. Bitch about mediocrity for a full day, and something will pop up to prove you wrong.
This... this is nice. And over the 'if it ain't twenty stories don't waste our time' limit for the downtown.
Also, unless I miss my guess, this is going at the corner of 104 Ave and 105 St. Here (http://maps.google.ca/?q=Edmonton,+AB&ie=UTF8&z=18&ll=53.545937,-113.501666&spn=0.002225,0.007306&t=h&om=1).
I thought this thread was going to be about gay people.
But this is better.

Emporis has it under it's address.
I clearly see some influences from the Omega on the podium. I really like how there is no fake historical stuff on it at all. A nice change.

I like that those are definitely penthouses at the top. There is no mistaking that the top floors of this baby are going to be money.

Nice. I particularly like the East elevation. Is that beige stucco that I am looking at on the North elevation? It doesn't fit with the rest of the building even if it isn't... :S

The picture says split-face concrete block, not stucco.

Ah, I see. Had to get closer to my screen to see that, heh.
The colour is still bad. Change it to grey-ish to match the rest of the tower.

Does anyone else see similarities between this and the 'Batman tower' in Nashville? (The Bell South Tower that is...) Perhaps it's just the double antenna.

Well, what do you expect for a city that's seen too little in the way of good design in recent construction!?

Looks nice. I am not sure about the color, but being that the trees are brown it may just be the rendering.

some thought definitely went into the design unfortunately, it's pretty ugly

That side wall has GOT to go. Absolutely purposeless and ugly.
Overall, looks like a residential version of Calgary's Ernst & Young Tower. Same massing, light towers, approx. height, rectangular floorplate... you name it.

Not bad, not bad at all.

Yeah, it is a residential version of E&Y in Calgary.
Overall, computer renderings aren't the greatest. But the building looks good and its height will give that part of downtown a denser look. Nice use of glass and overall massing.
8/10
@goodlookin' - I know what you're saying, I would love for someone to propose a building that looks like Spire or X.

Jan 25, 2007, 9:27 PM
The sloped penthouse levels gives the impression of squatter, bulkier form and the hipped roof & spires are unnecessary pomo clutter of what could be a simple, elegant, modern tower
Stephen Ave
Jan 25, 2007, 9:49 PM
Not a bad looking tower, I'd give it a 6 out of 10. Personally I'd like to see more glass, and a little more modern look, but overall not a bad looking tower, and it's got some height.
Certainly a world apart from some of the commie block looking stuff that has been going up.

Not a bad looking tower. It will definately improve the area with design and density to say the least.
I probably like the building due to its resemblance to this sketch which i drew for the hampton site a few weeks age lol:

Here is an update:
Re-vote - street level seems to be better than originally speculated... spires don't look as scary as I thought...

Not bad. The retail podium could definitely use some articulation. Also, no need for that strange little setback with plantings. It looks from this view a little too much like a random suburban commercial or industrial building. The tower is quite a bit better though than the initial rendering indicated.

The Q reminds me of a taller, meaner OMEGA with a taller podium.
I agree, the podium needs work - but overall melts well with the rest of the building... Perhaps a neat looking overhang/awning would do the trick :P

Wow. Bang on comment. That does look like high-end small bay industrial.

Put the landscaping between the traffic of 104th Ave and the pedestrians, and put the pedestrians next to the retail.
Not that the 'landscaping' is going to be anything other than a snow bank or mud pit for half the year, and a dessicated wasteland the other half.....

id like to have a steel and glass overhang found in much of van, but i think it looks pretty good....regardless of its "similarity"
