No offence Cold, but here is another poll.
This poll is for a project known as 'Oscar'. I'm hoping to send the resuls of this poll to the architect or developer of this project.

The street presence is horrible, the tower is meh, and I don't know what the fuck is up with the roof element. Get rid of the roof element and change the podium and it would be atleast okay.
Stephen Ave
01-26-2007, 10:43 PM
I don't like this project. The podium doesn't go with the tower portion at all, and the roof element is just plain bad. All three elements of it are pretty sad on it's own, but the three together are terrible.
My opinion of this project :slob:

I just threw-up in my mouth a bit. I'll have to vote terrible for this one. It does have greenspace on top of the podium with trees which might give it a partial above terrible.

One sad looking building.
If the podium was more modern styled, something along the lines of Nova/Stella and the rooftop piece disappeared it wouldn't actually be that bad.

Something about having a symmetrical tower centered in the middle of an asymmetrical podium just rubs me the wrong way with some 40-grit.

01-27-2007, 01:27 AM
There is absolutely nothing interesting with that building.
It's so bland... and then they throw on a headpiece. The podium is disproportional to the rest of the tower..
With it's short stumpy size (density limitation due to the size of the site), they should at least do something that spans the width of podium rather than having it set back so much.. Do a mini-boomerrang.. :)

As it stands, this is one horrifying abortion of a building. And it's sad because even though it is awful as it stands, the building could be saved with even the slightest of changes.
1) Make that podium symmetrical.
2) Get rid of the strips of grass in front of the building. Have enough space for trees and such but otherwise build up as close the curb as possible.
3) For the love of whatever deity you happen to believe in, get rid of that fence!
4) At at least 5 or 6 floors... hell, even double the heigh of the building. It's far enough from the river that shadowing shouldn't be an issue
5) Get rid of the retarded roof element. Having a simple, round cover for the mechanical stuff is better than this.
6) I hope I'm not the only person who sees those balconies on the right actually overlapping the glass?!? And the other side doesn't? What the hell is going on there?

1) Make that podium symmetrical.
Nope. That thing is not salveagable as a podium. What the frack is that blue thing above the door? Notice the way that the brick gets bleached once it hits the horizontal strip? There is no detail that doesn't give me pain.
2) Get rid of the strips of grass in front of the building. Have enough space for trees and such but otherwise build up as close the curb as possible.
Or, put in a sidewalk? Picture this puppy in March with no sidewalk.
3) For the love of whatever deity you happen to believe in, get rid of that fence!
Yep. Or build a bigger one to keep the neighbours from burning this thing to the ground.
4) At at least 5 or 6 floors... hell, even double the heigh of the building. It's far enough from the river that shadowing shouldn't be an issue
I have no idea where this is supposed to be situated. I assumed in an industrial park in the suburbs.
5) Get rid of the retarded roof element. Having a simple, round cover for the mechanical stuff is better than this.
The roof element is the only part of this design that is the slightest bit interesting. Start with the roof element and design something that it suits.
6) I hope I'm not the only person who sees those balconies on the right actually overlapping the glass?!? And the other side doesn't? What the hell is going on there?[/QUOTE] I'm guessing piss poor draftsmanship.

Sorry if anyone notices my cranky mood tonight. I'm still fuming about how incompetent Calgary Transit is, and why I should ever have to stand around (yes, stand, because the bastards won't put more than 3 of those fricken metal benches in the bus shelter, which is BTW the only part of the station that is heated, even though more people are actually down on the platform freezing their asses off when it is cold.) and wait over 40 minutes for a fucking bus? You idiots, perhaps instead of running 4 buses around the entire Deep SW, you could actually make them feeder buses like they are supposed to be and cut the routes in in half while maintaining the same damn coverage, number of buses and drivers, and double the frequency? Grrrrrrrrr... :hell:
But I will leave the rest of that rant to another thread at a different time...

i love it...the architectural feature on the roof reflects some of the current thinking of santiago calatrava....the trees on the roof are similar to some of the work being produced in vancouver by Richard Henriquez.....the strong classic styling of the plinth (base) refelcts calgary's history, reminding us of when the glenbow reservoir once produced some of the finest architectural sandstone in north america....the canopy over the daringly asymetrical front doors presents a functional and visually strong message of entry.
all in all, my comments would be that the architect is bringing sexy back.

What the hell is it? The architect should be castrated!
That is an absolute embarassment on Calgary's architecture. So many are trying so hard to bring a better quality of design and it is work like this that seems to have taken us 10 steps back for the one we have taken forward. I would hope that the urban design review panel pushes for a re-design...or that a community voice of the public can stop this.

I guess you haven't seen the Kai Mortensen towers .. ie... the shift is unlikely to occur anytime soon
I like the glass, and other than the tacked on roof element, I think it's not bad. I don't know why everyone is complaining about the podium...it's brick and stone which sure beats stucco, concrete, and spandrel glass.

glenbow reservoir is that big lake in calgary where you can rent boats and stuff...in the southwest, i think.....it used to be a huge sandstone quarry that was later filled with water to make a lake...i guess it must not be called that anymore...what do i know, i am just a winnipegger trying to be funny.

I wouldn't be surprised if this project was delayed indefinitely, as it seems like a half-baked concept all the way around. This may be one of those cases where the high construction costs actually do us some good by preventing the marginal projects from ever getting built. I clicked on the link to pre-register just for fun, and they ask the standard "What price range are you interested in?" question, and the lowest number you can pick is $500,000 to $650,000. Anyone who would drop that kind of coin on this piece of junk deserves to lose half a mil.
