Hey All!
We have currently aquired some land in Three Sisters, Canmore that is zoned for multi-family of about 3 to 4 stories.
Here's your opportunity to possibly have your say on what we should build. The more specific the better. Think "Urban Alpine". Here is the Site Plan

Hmmm... gotta say that I'm not a fan of the alpine style of architecture myself. Do you have any photos or aerials of the site?

My vote's on the World's Larget Bighorn Sheep.
You know, one of those drive-by statues. You could climb up inside and look out from the tips of the horns. Make it 40 stories tall, with a snowboard ramp down the "backside".
Eh, it's more of a Shelbyville idea.

How large is the site? We can't really be very specific unless we know a bit more about the parcel.

is the land flat or hilly? what is the property going to be used for?

I agree with the glass and stone concept. Go for energy efficiency, and keep in mind:
No house should ever be on a hill or on anything. It should be of the hill. Belonging to it. Hill and house should live together each the happier for the other.

Need some context as to what the surrounding land uses are. What does the town's OCP (do they even have one?) have the land designated as? Dimensions, site area.
If its zoned for multi-family 3-4 storeys than that could be the easiest thing to go with as rezoning is costly.

Something with zero surface parking! Unfeasable, maybe. But then more room for residential and commercial.

A giant Tim Horton's in the shape of a doughnut... Perhaps chocolate glaced, but in winter it would turn into a sugar powdered.

HaHa, Some creative answers... but maybe they won't all fly.
I guess to give a little bit more info on the land:
• it does have a slope that can create challenges, but not huge challenges
• no more than 3 stories
• Multi-family
• Think afluent buyers
• Think $700+ sq. ft. price ranges
• All below grade parking (ramp cannot be visible from the street)
• Land is 2.76 Acres
• Density is 76units
• Unit mix:
25% 1000sq.ft.
35% 1200sq.ft.
25% 1400sq.ft.
15% 1600-1800sq.ft.
• Visit www.tsmv.com for more inspiration of what's been built there in the past
• What kind of materials would you use? Interior? exterior? courtyard features?
Also, if anyone knows of any great Alpine-type of multi-family world wide, please post images or sites.
Cheers!

I would build something similar to Canmore Crossing... except with a lot more stone work, and more complimentary colors. But a condo facility with hotel type amenities always sells well. I dunno if you'd want the main floor retail, as it might be too remote to attract a whole lot.

^agree, interesting layout. Although the use/finish of concrete is a bit excessive for my urban taste.

wow thanks...i appreciate that....this is one of three similar buildings in a large development outside of victoria (colwood)....it is on a great site that cascades down to the ocean....it just got approval and they are begining the sales blitz soon...currently they are constructing the sales office on site.
these three buildings along with three 15 storey, victoria style fatscrapers are what i spent my summer designing....i hope they sell.

Meh the wood/concrete arrangement isn't much better. Use of color, or other artistic elements would have been nice(Nice greenery in the planters). Such a unique structure begs for more life. I suppose one must consider the location, and those who occupy the units. Good design nonetheless.

How about a large egg ... even bigger than Vegreville's.. giving them a complex. That would cut them down to size. :whip:
Those smug bastards with their giant egg. ;)

How about a giant Ground Hog ...
... then once a year the nations eyes would be on Canmore.... and its giant groundhog .. "Dave". Groundhog Day could become a civic holiday.
Can you tell I am enjoying this thread?? :D

Trueviking, that design is cool! It really breaks away from the mold. Do you think you will be doing anything in Calgary anytime soon? (if not already)

i actually heard just this week about a hotel downtown for a client of ours who owns a few properies in calgary....i just had a crude site plan faxed to me, so i dont know much about it yet....i'll keep you posted.
a good friend of mine is doing the new library at the u of c....he works for saucier and perrotte in montreal.....it sounds like it is going to be awesome.

That will sure be interesting to hear about! Definately post it in the Construction thread (#11 or #12 or whatever we are on by that time).
Yeah, the Taylor Family Digital Library does sound promising, but the massing so far is pretty vague. I also wonder when exactly they are going to close Craigie Hall as I have classes in there (probably not until after the semester though...)

Yeah, I want a trueviking building! We've had some rumours about some new hotels coming downtown. Some major upscale chains like Four Seasons, Ritz etc.
Saucier and Perrotte are fantastic! U of C is hiring some great designers of late.
