This news is a little old, but I just found out that Kingston, Ontario, introduced Park and Ride transit service last year. Here is the info from the website. I think this is interesting, considering the metro area only has about 145,000 people, and the actual inner city or old City of Kingston has about 55,000 people.

This Park and Ride is part of a service improvment plan to get more people onto public transit. Another improvment being planned is 10min rush hour service on major routes.

Transit Adds Park-And-Ride Service From Belle Park

Kingston Transit announced today that the city's first park and ride area will be located at the Belle Park fairways parking lot on Montreal Street. Officials say there will be 20 free parking stalls initially dedicated to park and ride patrons and that if demand exceeds capacity, extra parking spaces can be accommodated.

"Commuters will now be able to park vehicles at the Belle Park fairways for free and catch a KT bus at regular fare to the downtown core, said Paula Nichols, manager of Transit and Parking for the City of Kingston. "We are hoping this initiative will reduce the demand on long-term permit parking in the downtown."

More frequent buses with 15-minute service will compliment the new park and ride service that operates Monday through Friday says Nichols.

"We've added an extra bus on Montreal Street from downtown to Belle Park so that during commuter travel times, 6:45 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. and 4 to 5:30 p.m. daily, there will be a bus every 15 minutes. The total trip time from the park and ride to downtown is expected to be just 10 to 12 minutes," she added.

"We are taking a strategic approach to commuter transportation by providing opportunities to encourage multi-modal travel, said Malcolm Morris, director of transportation. "Belle Park is the first of several park and ride facilities that are currently under development."

The park and ride concept was first identified in the Kingston Transit business plan as a strategy to increase transit ridership.

Cash fare to ride a city bus is $2.25 (adult) and $2 (student and senior). A sheet of 10 bus tickets costs $20 (adult) and $15 for student and seniors. Monthly bus passes offer the best value with an adult pass costing $65 and while student and senior passes are $48 and $44 respectively.

I think it's a good first start. But what they should do is at the Kingston Centre, they recently tore down the indoor mall to build a big-box 'paradise' (barf!). At the same time, a new transit terminal was built for busses at the mall. The parcel of land used for the mall is sitting vacant. They should use the vacant land for a new park-and-ride lot. A lot more people would use it than the lot at Belle Park.

you have pics of the kingston mall?

I used to live in kingston way long ago - 1993-1994

always interested to see the changes there

the park and ride sounds good - downtown was always quite busy and parking could be hard to find
