So last night, and today, I wandered around downtown Edmonton and took a whole whack-load of pictures. Here they are:

Enbridge tower, with the Full moon poking out.

Another picture on Jasper, looking South.

THe next three are just pics I took of the plans for Stationlands that are in the office in Manulife Place...

http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00007-8-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00007-8.JPG)

http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00008-10-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00008-10.JPG)

OK. I've parked my car on the street, and I'm beginning on a tour....
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00009-9-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00009-9.JPG)

Here's our city hall.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00010-9-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00010-9.JPG)

Public art in front of city hall.

http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00011-8-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00011-8.JPG)

The CN Tower in Edmonton is one of my favourite buildings. Others differ on seeing it's attrativeness...
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00012-6-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00012-6.JPG)

Here's a panorama out front of City Hall. Looking south
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00013-5-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00013-5.JPG)

The Carillon tower in front of city hall. I like clocks, and I like carillons. They were actually ringing the bells for three o'clock when I was taking this picture.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00014-3-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00014-3.JPG)

More context for the carillon.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00015-3-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00015-3.JPG)

Concrete doesn't fare well here in Edmonton. This is the Art Gallery...
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00016-2-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00016-2.JPG)

I'm relatively new to Edmonton, so I don't know what all the buildings are yet, but this one is quite imposing....
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00017-3-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00017-3.JPG)

Looking south down 97th Street.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00018-3-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00018-3.JPG)

The back of the theatre. as opposed to a movie place.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00019-3-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00019-3.JPG)

This looks like the gate to Chinatown, but Chinatown is north of here.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00020-3-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00020-3.JPG)

I didn't wander around Jasper East, but this gives an idea of what it's like. This is taken from in front of the big pink Government of Canada building, looking East.

http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00021-3-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00021-3.JPG)

This picture of the Hardware Grill is taken exactly one block south of the last picture. That's the river valley you see on the other side of the street. The Hardware Grill is one of Edmonton's better restaraunts.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00022-3-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00022-3.JPG)

An Inukshuk overlooks the valley, next to the Infamous Hall D.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00023-8-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00023-8.JPG)

The view from next to the inukshuk.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00024-8-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00024-8.JPG)

The art in front of Hall D....
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00025-6-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00025-6.JPG)
Looking east down Jasper in front of the much reviled Hall D. I honestly don't hate it.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00026-5-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00026-5.JPG)

The actual Hall, with it's view reflected in the glazing.

http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00027-7-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00027-7.JPG)

Another shot, from the far side from the last one.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00028-5-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00028-5.JPG)

One more.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00029-5-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00029-5.JPG)

Yeah. That's a hell of a view.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00030-7-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00030-7.JPG)

Walking back up from the last vantage point. The pink palace in front, Hall D's ugliest wall is to the right.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00031-4-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00031-4.JPG)

heheh. I guess the premier has a spot at the Shaw conference centre.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00032-4-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00032-4.JPG)

Looking West down Jasper.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00033-4-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00033-4.JPG)

The ugliest Hummer of all time. The mind boggles.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00034-4-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00034-4.JPG)

One of several prime pieces of real estate being used as a parking lot. Across from the Fairmont...
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00035-4-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00035-4.JPG)

This just struck me as a weird structure . Part of the entrance to the Fairmont.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00036-4-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00036-4.JPG)

OK. Let's count how many things have been done wrong here. This is probably one of the prettiest old buildings in Edmonton. So.... let's put an ugly utility box on the street in front of it. And a garbage can. And a post office box. And an ugly light fixture. And then string temporary telephone wire across in front of it. The signage is just icing.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00037-4-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00037-4.JPG)

These two buildings are just gems.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00038-5-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00038-5.JPG)

Glad this one survived. It's a great anchor for Rice Howard Way.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00039-6-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00039-6.JPG)

This is a very cool clock, that is being terribly mistreated.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00040-6-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00040-6.JPG)

And neglected. I do like the patina of the metal, but to work, it really needs to be kept clean and looking good, so you know that the rust is intentional.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00041-4-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00041-4.JPG)

In the foreground is the Sherlock Holmes Pub, and the big building is the Philips McKinnon building, where our lawyer is.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00042-4-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00042-4.JPG)

The parkade on RHW that I've heard complained about. ScotiaBank building in gold...
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00043-4-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00043-4.JPG)

Continuing from Part 1:

Here we're looking west on Rice Howard Way. I love the way that the central building is reflecting the gold building.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00044-4-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00044-4.JPG)

A small tree on top of big rocks. Very strange.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00045-4-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00045-4.JPG)

Now that's a nice big tower. And nice old buildings in the foreground too!
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00046-5-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00046-5.JPG)

A nice boutique hotel, right downtown.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00047-5-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00047-5.JPG)

The Hop's Handbag building. Recipient of 'lamest use of an amazing retail location' award.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00048-4-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00048-4.JPG)

'cause a little bird poo might make the awning ugly.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00049-5-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00049-5.JPG)

I like how they didn't bother to finish the east side of the Epcor building. I guess they figured the hotel would get torn down....
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00050-4-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00050-4.JPG)

The old Bank of Montreal building, on the far side of New City..
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00051-5-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00051-5.JPG)

New City.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00052-4-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00052-4.JPG)

Again with the old BOM building. the marble is quite nice. The green brick, not so much.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00053-5-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00053-5.JPG)

No. seriously. Enough green brick.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00054-3-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00054-3.JPG)

When they tear it down, those light fixtures have to be saved.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00055-2-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00055-2.JPG)

That's what a bank should look like.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00056-2-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00056-2.JPG)

It's cold. Time for a coffee. There's a Starbucks. Yay!
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00057-2-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00057-2.JPG)

OK. Back to boggling over the green brick.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00058-7-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00058-7.JPG)

Alberta College?
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00059-6-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00059-6.JPG)

I just like this hill.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00060-6-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00060-6.JPG)

A piece of modern art called "To be an office tower"
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00061-7-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00061-7.JPG)

The Starlite Room. Another bar in a very cool building. This was the first bar in Edmonton that I went to.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00062-6-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00062-6.JPG)

It needs some TLC. Brick is crumbling in the top right corner.

http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00063-6-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00063-6.JPG)

Public art around a park.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00064-6-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00064-6.JPG)

The renovations on the Bay building continue. Lovely zinc.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00065-6-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00065-6.JPG)

Really. Quite lovely that zinc....
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00066-6-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00066-6.JPG)

Looking south.

The Paramount theatre. Another underutilized downtown building.
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00068-6-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00068-6.JPG)

Western Canada's only big bank...
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00069-6-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00069-6.JPG)

For sale hunh?
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00070-6-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00070-6.JPG)

Think someone might buy the neighbouring building and put up something big?
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00071-6-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00071-6.JPG)

Sobey's being built on the Corner, and the two Icons will fill in all the way to the existing residential tower there.

I really hate that they allow wrong dates to be put on buildings. The Century should not have the old date on it. The Plumbing And Heating Supplies building is old though...
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00086-2-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00086-2.JPG)

This would be killer if it was cleaned up. Jenny Craig never does good things with their buildings....
http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00087-2-tm.jpg (http://aptenobytes.typepad.com/m0nkymans_photo_blog/images/DSC00087-2.JPG)

I have yet to go into the Boardwalk Market...

This needs to be filled in....

Man, a photo spread like that reminds me of just how much Edmonton is Winnipeg, with hills. And no, that isn't intended as an insult towards either city. They just resemble each other in so many ways, especially all that 1960s Soviet-style concrete mixed in with turn-of-the-century terra cotta etc.

Oh, those bird spikes are likely not to keep crap off of the awnings - you'll notice they only are on the edges. They're there to keep the bird crap off of PEOPLE. Unless I missed something from the angle, but I've never actually seen an entire awning covered with spikes. The birds are free to sit in the middle and poop up the awning all they want - just not on my head.

No need to roll your eyes now :)

Oh - and Japanese Village, I'm ashamed of you. Nice digs though, I HAVE to check that out next time I head north.

Windchill only counts when you're not dressed properly.

I agree, that was a great photo tour. I have been working outside of Edmonton for about 6 months now, and what strikes me when I see the city now is how sparse the streets are in terms of people and buildings. I think that cold weather is just a poor excuse for not making more of an effort. Can you imagine how hot a restaurant or cafe would look with a big window fronting the street and a huge fireplace inside. Just the glow alone in such grey surroundings would draw me like a moth to a fire.

That said, there are some really nice developments going up that will make all the difference in the world. The low-income housing on 97st is actually quite well done and built right up to the street. It makes the area seem livelier and there is no one even living there yet. The Bay conversion is also looking really good (I like the zinc - M0nkey, were you being sarcastic?). I can't wait for the U of A gallery to open up there. The University has an absolutely huge collection of art and artefacts (including an Egyptian mummy) and finally they will now have somewhere to exhibit them. And lastly, Sobeys will add some great street front retail to the 104/Jasper area. Finally we are seeing some of the large chains tailoring their formats for an urban context. I'm certain it is going to pay off in spades for Sobeys at that location.

Thanks again, MM. Keep 'em coming!

Nice pics, being from Victoria it's so wierd to see so many of these 'bunker' style buildings. It also really blows my city-planning mind how skyscrapers can be on one side of the street and vacant lots and 1-2 story suburban style buildings on the other side. Things are pretty busy pedestrian wise downtown even in the winter, but we maybe get 0-6 days of snow a year.

Sometimes I wish victoria had a couple office towers, even a couple 70's ones could add a little character to the skyline. Maybe we could trade you some wall-to-wall midrises to fill those bleak suburban-scale developments that don't belong in a downtown, and you could give us a couple 15-20 story office blocks ? I wouldn't mind some more snow in the winter either... got any to spare?

Monkyman - I should've said this quite some time ago - nice pics despite the cold, dreary conditions.

Citysource - Nice pics too - Here's a great suggestion: why not post your pics in the City Photos section of SSC, if not already?

Perhaps because every trip to SSC results in a 10 point loss in your IQ.

Man how old are the busses you guys are running up there? I was actually envious of the overhead cables, because at the least the busses are quieter and cleaner (less emissions). But the one in the picture looks absolutely vintage. Like from the 70s.

all those of that style that remain are being phased out this year/next year I believe. Most of the fleet is now running this style

The buses are New Flyer buses. I would like to see the old trolleys gone. Replace them or tear the wires down (or maybe make them streetcar routes.)

Edit - the new ones are not electric. Though we do have a couple hybrids being experimented around with.

no, only the old style GMCs are electric, and those are all likely coming out in the next 4 years (wires included), unless they are replaced.

Flatlander if you look closly you can tell that the buses are typically not old. There are a few old ones kicking around and those are all to be replaced this year. However all the trolly buses look old school and are due to be replaced or removed entuirely. I personally hope we keep replace the buses with new style trolly buses.

Did you say Newflyers?? :D

Good ol' Winnipeg Busses.

I for one enjoyed the photos.. of course it would have looked much nicer in Summer, but so would every city in Canada

I really enjoyed the ones of 104th. I remember when they built that Safeway retail strip on 104th, while Grant Mac College was being built .. I spent more than a few nights at the downtown Sawmill, which is easily my favorite Edmonton restaurant.

Personally, I love the New Flyers. I don't like the St. Albert's buses, even if it is made by the same manufacturers.

I've always liked the trolley buses in Edmonton, but I hate the cables running everywhere.

Fifty years from now, that building will be threatened by some development or other, and people will defend it with their lives. You know it, I know it, and we both love it. :)

Stuff like that is what makes cities interesting.

Do any of you read the previous posts? Here's the scoop, John Day did approach the partners of the firm with regards to purchasing the site. Half of them agreed to sell while the other half did not. Apparently there are some internal disagreements between the partners. This resulted in an indecision to sell the site. Therefore, the redevelopment proceeded as is.
