I visited Scranton for an day back in October (I know, what took so long with the pics?). Once again I was not paying attention and filled my memory stick before I got through with the tour. I met MetroJunkie (whom I may rename Mr. Scranton) for lunch at the Radisson Hotel (old train station - cool place, sorry no pics :( ). We then started our walk. Scranton is on the cusp of a downtown rebound. It has a ton of old gems from its heyday as an important city in the coal region (a big energy source back in the day). I'll let others fill you all in on the history. If you happen to be passing the city, take a short trip to downtown and see what it's all about (hit up Wilkes Barre too).

I'll start with the old Masonic Temple (now the Scranton Cultural Center). MetroJ led me into this classic old rascal like he owned it.

It's nice that Scranton has been able to preserve a good portion of its downtown buildings even as the city has been hit hard economically. It's a PA city that I've never been to... I think I'll take a detour on my next road trip west. Thanks for the tour!

Thanks for posting pics of this area, Ex Ith.;) A lot of people from New York City and New Jersey are starting to discover this metro area. I really need to do a tour of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Nice work EX- Ithacan; Scranton has some wonderful architecture...there was so much money there and in Wilkes-Barre back in the salad days of Big Coal---and luckily a lot of the civic investment is still there to enjoy as evidenced by your pics.........and there's plenty more........enough to warrant your return trip. Oh and I've always loved the dramatic, steep roof of the Scranton Municipal Building

Hey, Ex-Ith...

I had no idea you took so many pics before your memory stick konked out.
Of course, now you are shaming me into moving my ass to get my pics from that mini-tour uploaded.

And wow...you can't say we're not well-fed in Scranton. Look at the bread basket I'm carrying in that pic you took of me. Cripes!:slob:

Your pics look great. I enjoyed showing you around.

Thanks MetroJ. I really wish I'd gotten a new memory stick before I got to Scranton, I'll know better next time. You were a heck of a tour guide, and I'd recommend you to anyone visiting the city.

btw, my bread basket is a whole lot bigger than yours.
