CN Tower Vs. Burj Dubai
Many of us probably know about Burj Dubai trying to become the tallest building in the world. That means the CN Tower will lose its record has "tallest free standing tower" that it held for over 30 years. Burj Dubai plan is to be the tallest period, but has tight competition.
Link to height diagram: http://www.skyscraperpage.com/diagrams/?25624746
This is not the guarantee height of the Burj Dubai, since they are keeping it a secret so other competition to have the new tallest can't out beat right away.
A couple weeks ago, the Burj Dubai had past the 100 floors mark in construction.

So what I was wondering is what you feel about the CN Tower being out talled.

it was bound to happen eventually. and at least its with a "go big, or go home" project like Dubai and not something like a big box in NYC or Chicago.

It's sad to see it happen, but how many years has the CN held the title? 30? That in itself is a huge accomplishement! I would doubt the Burj will have a reign that long!

Mey...they are welcome to it. Records are meant to be broken. The height of the CN Tower was much more exciting thirty years ago, but now every city is getting supertalls, so the thrill is gone. It served us well, and the CN tower will still be a major draw..

Once I saw the CN tower in person, I didn't like it. It really diminishes the rest of Toronto's skyline, which is unfortunate.

I don't think many people get that impression. Millions flock to see it and enjoy the view. In my entire life I had never heard of people disliking the CN Tower because it diminishes the skyline or makes the skyline asymetric, til I stumbled upon SSC and here! LOL!

I think the CN Tower adds to the Toronto skyline that most cities skylines are missing.

Without CN Tower

(It was a really quick job, the base of the tower is still there, and the clouds are messed up.)
I believe it doesn't matter where the tallest building is, but what can man create and build.

Strictly from a pure design aspect, it is a natural focal point for the skyline... most people would recognize a focal point as giving interest to a skyline.

Another shot without the CN Tower, actually it is in there. But not so prominent. Toronto looks like any other city without the CN Tower.

I heard the burj dubai project ran into finanically difficulties and is stalled for one year.
Any truth to this rumour?
Edit:
Curtain wall manufacturer has declared bankrupcy forcing the burj developer to find another source for the curtain wall exterior of the building.

I'm surprised that it took so long to pass. Burj won't look as good in 30 years as the CN does now.

Its all good for Dubai, but i am concerned about the way they are building some of the buildings. One building i think Marine Towers (over 300 meters tall) is already cracking.

2 words. cheap labour, or maybe i should say slave labour. lol

they have cheap labour- which is great for pouring concrete, but when it comes to the high tech of the curtain wall they can get screwed easily when Western Engineering companies go belly up.
Good luck to Dubai in finding cheap ass Western Engineering consultants. -

Personally, I love the Burj. It upsets me to Canada will loose the title - especially since it's hard for small countries to gain prominent titles in the first place - but nothing can last forever.
To be honest, the title I really feel bad about loosing is the highest quality of life :(. I'd rather have had that for 30 years than the tallest-free standing structure.

The CN Tower defines our skyline, how can you say that? Also it's about time something was built taller, 30 years people come on.

The CN Tower was built in a 1970s height craze. At the time, they didn't think it would last nearly this long as the world's tallest so the fact that it's lasted so long has been a nice bonus.

I don't agree with the way it's being built (labor); but everyone get's their turn. CN has had the title for 30 years. Thats a damn long time...

Doesnt bother me at all. Im surprised it still holds the record.
For me, it definitely helps with my orientation knowing its south and at the lake.
I think Torontonians have a different relation other than beyond global pride with the CN Tower. There was an article somewhere that described how the CN Tower acts like a guardian to Torontonians because it is almost always within sight watching over us.

Indeed. I reckon that the Burj will not hold the record for anywhere near that long. In the last 2 centuries, which buildings have held the title for the longest period? Eiffel tower, followed by the venerable ESB, I would imagine.

There are at least a half of a dozen proposed supertall towers/skyscapers. Burj Dubai is one of the first that actually started construction. I don't think it'll hold the "tallest tower" title for long, at least nowhere near 30 years. Go CN TOWER!!!

What is the purpose of Burj Dubai? Is it office/communication tower, etc?

Yuck, I have absolutely no desire to see that. Our tower has good proportions, a fair height, is quirky, and has a unique relationship to our skyline. It also is a product of its time, I might add. Why screw around with something like that?
As for the BD/CN debate, well good on BD for doing what it does. Like salvius said, records are meant to be broken. CN has had a good long reign and I am dissappointed that it took so long for anyone to go out on a limb and start to build something bigger. And I have to agree with Chemist, the CN really makes the rest of Toronto's skyline look rather small. That said, it is a powerful focal point. The CN tower is to Toronto what the WTC's were to New York, IMHO.

Office, Residential, Hotel (Armani, the fashon designer has lent his name to the boutique hotel), and obviously Observation. truly a mixed use building.

absolutely agreed. Calgary has one of the most visually unique skylines in the country, if not the world. I enjoy Calgary's optical illusion of a skyline. when you look at it from different angles, other buildings look taller then our current tallest (PetroCanada).
