Though I don't live there anymore, I keep track of what's going on in my old home town and was surprised to learn that this project is (apparently) still alive. I saw a thread on it awhile back but it seems to have disappeared. Here's a link to the news story which has renderings of the project:

Who knows if this will actually happen (and I'm more than a little bummed to see another project bypassing downtown) but if it does I think this will be the tallest building in the Valley outside of Sacramento.

I started a thread last year, but evidently it has aged off of the board. I will look for additional information to post tonight.

Plan for high-rise towers at CSUB gets OK

By JENNY SHEARER, Californian staff writer

The future landscape at Cal State Bakersfield may include high-rise towers with condos and a hotel.

Crisp, Cole & Associates received conceptual approval for its mixed-use project from the California State University system’s Board of Trustees today.

Crisp & Cole University Towers features twin 31-story structures with luxury condominiums, a four-star hotel and conference center, office space, retail center and parking.

“I am absolutely elated,” developer Carl Cole said about getting conceptual approval.

The project will be “the flagship of the universities in the Cal State system once we get this going,” he said.

The towers’ estimated cost is between $300 million to $400 million.

They would be on the southwest side of campus.

The university wants to pursue this project or one with similar components, including a hotel, if negotiations with Crisp & Cole don’t pan out, according to the project proposal given to the Board of Trustees.

The project would help develop student employment and internship opportunities in management, communications, accounting and marketing, according to Cal State Bakersfield.

It could be a stimulus for establishing new or expanded business majors, including merchandising, marketing, retail, business and residential, restaurant and hotel management.

The proposal includes a 700-space parking garage, which may costs $14 million.

The towers are the second of three proposed public-private partnerships.

In November 2006, trustees gave conceptual approval to Gregory D. Bynum & Associates’ four- to six-story office building project. Bakersfield Adventures for the Mind, an interactive children’s museum, is the final proposal.

Trustees will consider it at their March meeting.

Crisp & Cole starts downsizing (http://www.bakersfield.com/137/story/136341.html)

According to this article, the towers have been reduced from 32 (?) stories to 24 each. The developer has reorganized and is still seeking financing but says that the reorganization will have no effect on the plans to build these towers. We'll see...

Good to know they want to go through with this, what is the location? Isnt it to far off from the main parts of Bakersfield?

Are there any other developments for this area?

This development will be waaay outside the CBD of Bakersfield.. CSU-B is a good 8 miles from downtown Bakersfield... having worked in Downtown Bakersfield for 2 years, I can most assuredly say that these towers would have helped the downtown skyline in a big way. Oh well, at least the 'field is getting something..

According to the Bakersfield Californian, the developer has secured tentative loan approval for the project -

BUT...

He is also facing a huge number of default notices on other loans so who knows...

According to today's paper it looks like Crisp & Cole is not going to make this happen.
Negotiations ended Monday between would-be developer David Crisp and Cal State Bakersfield for a twin 24-story tower project on campus.

In a memo released Monday afternoon, university President Horace Mitchell said the deal stalled because the former Crisp & Cole Real Estate company failed to meet certain requirements needed to move forward.

But Carl Cole, Crisp's former partner, had a different take. He said recent reports in The Californian about a rash of defaults on Crisp-related properties affected the deal.

But it appears the university will try to find another developer.
In about two months, the university will start searching for a new partner for an on-campus hotel and conference center by asking for new proposal requests.
