According to the 2000 census,

45% of people in Oregon were born in Oregon

44% of people in the Portland-Salem metropolitan area were born in Oregon

44% of people in the city of Portland were born in Oregon

No wonder they're so xenophobic here, they're a dying breed!

It's definitely true that it appears more people who live in Oregon now were not born in Oregon, and of course the census does support that. My family (and some ancestors) have been in Oregon for quite awhile, but I'm definitely the exception at work or among friends.

I do have a few close friends who are native Oregonians (and native Portlanders, like me) too, and a fair amount of family who are. But I'd say maybe only around 30 percent of my co-workers were born in Oregon, and fewer in Portland. When you put Portland into the equation it seems to drop to about 10 percent.

Yikes

So I wonder, if so many people are non-native-Oregonians, where did so many of the native-Oregonians go?? It seems like most of our growth has come from in-migration, but obviously there has been a lot of out-migration going on also.

I once lived in Oregon (Portland). I don't remember who was from where, but I'm sure it's similar to what's going on up here. Most of my friends are not from the state of Washington and even fewer are from the city. I guess the percentage of people who are not from these parts is higher than those who are. I like it that people are flocking to our gloomy part of the country and livening it up.

they probably ended up in the ground...i don't think there was any mass oregon exodus but certainly at somepoint, the in-migrant population overtook the native oregon mortality/birth rates. im sure its the same story for alot of the other coastal states too.
