Minneapolis gets a bad rep for being a cold city, but it certainly M~O~V~E~S regardless.

Even in its coldest month, pedestrians, traffic, footsteps, and pathways show their unwillingness to cease; Let the city explain itself...

I love that bridge in St. Paul. Minneapolis is an awesome city. I only live about 3 hours away, so I visit whenever I can.

I think that Minneapolis and its the buildings (except for the skyscrapers) reminds of Sweden and Norway. May be it is partly because of the weather.

Yes, indeed, once I got used to the extreme cold, I resumed my routine of walking and bicycling in the dead of very cold winters. I was in Minneapolis for the first time in a long while and the city was in the grip of a very early cold snap (early December 2006). Not being used to the cold, I was amazed at all of the people I saw walking and bicycling. It's a fact of life out there that I was once a part of. I used to be one of those people and was happy to see others doing the same. I'm a total weather wimp now, but I have much respect for the hearty folks out there. Oh, and the Midtown Exchange, I hear that it's amazing. It's nice to see that beautiful building live another exciting life. Congratulations, Minneapolis.

Whats up with those nasty ass "ghetto in the sky" buildings. Are those projects. They are pretty tall for shitty ass res towers. In San Diego we have a couple of really bad ones but they are only 15 floors maybe 18 max. The one on the left looks like something out of North Korea.

Well the city looks interesting to me. I'm assuming you weren't going for the most flattering shots in this thread, kind of trying to do an everday pedestrian theme. I've never lived in a city that looks drastically different in winter so its always nice to check out Minne.

I believe that crane is for the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management expansion project which is essentially right across the street from Riverside Plaza(or the "ghetto in the sky."

On a side note, the Cedar Riverside neighborhood, in which the "ghetto in the sky" is located, is actually quite interesting. It's the epicenter of the largest east African immigrant community (Somalis, Eritreans, Ethiopians, Oromo) in the nation. Cedar Avenue is always full of activity and the area is relatively safe for an inner city neighborhood.

Worth a visit, IMO, if you're from out of town and not afraid of a little grit.

Yeah I lived in the Chase building for a short time while I attended the UofM. I haven't been in that area for quite some time so I was surprised to see the crane.

I am guessing the people there are some of the craziest people in this country....and they all have frozen steel balls for putting up with that weather. It is insane that 3.1 million people would live there.

But with that said, those were some amazing shots of the city and it is definitely a city worth talking about in this country. Great job.

The cold myths are highly exaggerated. Usually we might have one or two weeeks of bitter cold weather. After that of course 30 degrees feels warm. I actually dread our summers more than our winters. High 90's with high humidity and no wind. That is what is really crazy.

I think one reason why people here are able to deal with the winters is that many of them (myself included) are originally from places in northern Minnesota or North Dakota where winters really are nasty.

Weatherwise, coming from the Iron Range or the Canadian borderland down to Minneapolis is an uptrade.

Twin Cities winters are pretty tame in comparison.

I work at a hotel, and people(like urbanlife) seem to find it acceptable to say things like "anyone who lives here is insane" to me when its cold out. Its usually when the temp is about 20 degrees below norm, and we are in a cold snap, but theres no telling them that. Perhaps they don't realize thats an incredibly rude and offensive thing to say, especially to a local? anyway, the cold is exaggerated, and anyone can find something bad about anywhere if they want, I have been to seattle in the rainy season, and I never said to a local "i can't believe you live here and put up with this drizzly weather all the time, you must be crazy", because that would be a rude thing to say, wouldn't it?

I have friends and family in other parts of the country who like to give me sh*t for living here. They all really like the Twin Cities area and that's after visiting during winter months (Nov. or Dec.). I usually get the same sort of response - It's not that cold or I actually thought it would be much worse. I always suggest they visit during the end of Jan. or beginning of Feb. I think they would then say I'm insane.

I've lived in Saint Paul my whole life and I feel a little special to be able to handle winter every year. I agree with the previous post about handling the summer. I HATE the hot humid summers around here. When it's cold you can wear a jacket and gloves, but when it's steaming hot you can only escape the heat by going inside.

The photo's are a great representation of a day walking around Minneapolis. Good job!

Nice pics. :) I've been to MPLS twice - once in a January, and once in a March. Regardless of how cold and snowy it was each time, Minneapolis is a gorgeous city, and one of my favourites.

Nice pics...as someone who lives in a city that doesn't get nearly that cold, it's interesting to see commerce in action in sub-zero readings. We keep moving in the Summer when sometimes at night the heat index stays above 100f all night due to extreme humidity. But, you get used to it....just keep the air on all of the time!

As for the snow this past week...we had one storm that was about 9.5 inches, and another that was about 12 inches. Other parts of the state/metro had more though. Theres about a foot or a little more on the ground now in the city, some parts of the state have 2 feet.

PS alon, we have days where the heat index stays at 100F all night also... only a couple times a year though. As a matter of fact I was in New Orleans in July, when I left there at 9pm it was 86 with a dewpoint of 75...when i got to Minneapolis at midnight, it was still 88 degrees with a dewpoint of 78. It was really odd going so far north and having it be hotter and more humid! Obviusly its not always that hot up here in the summer, but we do get the best of both worlds:)

....I thought the Earth's poles had switched and Colorado was where Minnesota used to be since we had a ton of snow in December and January and it piled up like it usually does up there. Thanks to your pics, I know things are back to normal, our snow has melted.
