KOCHI: The titanium wealth of Kerala will soon find its place in the global aerospace market with the Russian Government and Ministry of Defence mooting a joint venture to manufacture titanium plates and rods in the state.
The idea is to set up a Rs 3000-crore unit in Kerala with the MoD and Russian defence industries sharing the investment. The Russian Government, sources said, “is very interested in the project” and has agreed in principle to invest Rs 1,500 crore.
The MoD through the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) will invest a similar sum to create the entity “that will pay equal importance to export as well domestic markets”.

7,163 industrial units launched in Ernakulam
53,578 persons got employment in these units
KOCHI: Ernakulam District Industries Centre (DIC) has started 7,163 new industrial units and thereby generated employment for 53,578 persons during the last one year, Sebastian Pothampilly, general manager, DIC, said.
The rate of growth was higher than that registered during the previous year, he said. Among the new entrepreneurs, 626 were women, while 75 entrepreneurs were from the Scheduled Caste community.
The units attracted investments to the tune of Rs.1,427 crore, while the productivity from these units was pegged at Rs.2,870 crore. Eighteen units had been registered under the women’s industrial scheme for assistance from the government.
Loans totalling Rs.73.08 lakh were granted to 95 projects put forward by the new entrepreneurs. Under the seed capital investment scheme Rs.1.04 crore was distributed among 66 entrepreneurs. Under the State investment subsidy Rs.5.55 crore was given to 165 industrial units, while grants totalling Rs. 9.24 lakh was given to 24 entrepreneurs under the women’s industrial scheme, Mr. Pothampilly said.
About Rs. 17.05 lakh was spent in the district under the scheme for intensifying industrialisation during the last one year. Another Rs.1.47 lakh was spent as marketing outlets’ subsidy and Rs.1 lakh for training the entrepreneurs. During the period, Rs.1.51 lakh was given as capital investment aid to the industrial cooperative societies. Of the 690 applications received through the green channel counter, decision had been taken on all except five applications.
Sales worth Rs.2 crore were registered by organising five exhibitions, including a national one. More than 350 units participated in these exhibitions. Of the 115 applications received under the single window system, decisions were taken on 111, Mr. Pothampilly said.

It is the same project as the one KMC listed and the news report is what I posted.
That they will complete work in december 2008
is surely an error. ETL says that they plan it over 7 years.
And to confirm Rs.10221 crore for 163 million sq ft works out to abt Rs.670 per sq ft
which is quite what you expect for a project with mixed use like Tech park/Residential/
Hospitality/Health/Leisure.
To be reasonable, I expect this to be the third mega project to sit on Achuthanandan's
table. But on the same note, all the projects are likely to take off as they have
clear credentials, own land and detailed plans ready.

IT and training solutions company, Genovate Solutions, plans to invest around $3-5 million to open eight new centres across the country within the next 12 months, a top company official said.
"We will be investing $3-5 million for opening eight new centres in various parts of the country," Genovate Group's CEO J Anton Ravindran told PTI on the sidelines of a conference here today.
The company, in the last 12 months, had invested a similar amount in infrastructure upgradation and renovation of its existing centres.
Genovate, currently operates in Mumbai, Cochin, Trichy, Ahmedabad, Pune, Lucknow, Mangalore, Baroda, Hyderabad and Bangalore.
Out of the eight centres, two centres would be opened in the next three months in Lucknow and Thane, he said. "The remaining would be set up by April next year".
The company has not yet decided the cities where it would be opening its other six centres but would target the northern part of the country, he added.

Having concluded an International Convention on Responsible Tourism in Cochin in March this year, the Kerala Tourism Board is now looking to take the concept to other states including Gujarat.
The first state in the country to do so, Kerala has begun involving local communities, panchayats and self help groups (SHG) under its ‘responsible tourism' concept.
"The concept aims at involving the local communities in planning and arranging tour packages across the state and highlighting the right strengths in terms of culture, cuisine and locations. Responsible tourism will also help in generating local employment and we hope other states will adopt the concept once the pilot results are out," said M Sivasankar, director of Kerala Tourism Board, during his visit to Ahmedabad to promote tourism.
The board is in talks with other states like Gujarat and West Bengal for such initiatives and has itself begun pilot projects in four destinations including Kovalam, Kumarokam, Thekkady, and Wayanad. Sivasankar added that the pilot project will be conducted over a period of one year and later will be replicated in other tourist destinations.
To attract more international tourists, Kerala Tourism Board has taken up standardisation of services like ayurveda, house boats and house stays.
From 2002 to 2007, the state has seen a whopping 122 per cent growth in international tourist arrivals from 2,32,564 to 5,15,808, apart from a rise in forex earnings from Rs 706 crore to Rs 2,641 crore

Notice how small domestic terminal looks, with the international terminal expansion
in forefront. CIAL's upcoming domestic terminal must be bigger than the international
terminal. This is due to the difference in traffic it handles compared to other airports in Kerala.
Till date Cochin handles over 66% of domestic traffic to Kerala, indicating that
two thirds of the business traffic to Kerala is to Cochin. At the other two
airports Calicut and Trivandrum 70% of the passengers are gulf bound.
AAI data posted earlier shows that Cochin flight traffic is mainly constituted of domestic flights,
as in the other metros of India, while at Calicut and Trivandrum most of them are
middle-east bound international services.

Cochin is witnessing some FM action this week. Close on the heels of Mathrubhumi Group’s Club FM going on air in Cochin, Radio Mango, the FM venture of Malayala Manorama Publications, has also launched its operations there. Radio Mango is already present in Kozhikode, Thrissur and Kannur – all in Kerala.
As part of the Cochin launch, Radio Mango has undertaken an intensive multimedia campaign along with innovative on-ground promotional activity, christened ‘Nattile Tharam’ (Star of the State). The on-ground activity covered over 800 panchayats throughout Kerala.
Besides Malayalam music, Radio Mango would play Tamil, Hindi and English songs. Commenting on the launch, Amit Mathew, General Manager, Radio Mango, said, “Coming from the house of Malayala Manorama, we have in-depth understanding of the lifestyles, tastes and preferences of the listeners in Kerala. This has enabled us to formulate the right programme mix and marketing strategies. The recent IMRB study has ranked us as No. 1 at the three stations we currently operate in. We are confident of replicating the success story in Cochin as well.”
Targeted at not only the youth, but also the youthful, Radio Mango was the first private FM station to go on air in Kerala.

Town planners say that a mass rapid transport system such as the metro rail is inevitable in Kochi – a city whose residents have been much inconvenienced because of incessant traffic snarls. Senior Town Planner of the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) V. Gopalakrishna Pillai said that he recently got a first-hand experience of the metro rail system in New Delhi.
He termed as flimsy, allegations by detractors of the project that the road between the pillars that support the rails would become slums. “I could not find any slum beneath the rails in Delhi.
“The metro is a good means of mass rapid transport. Business activity in many parts of the city will have to be wound up, in the absence of a good mode of public transport. Care has to be taken so that the system is integrated with other modes of transport like boats, railways and buses.”
Mr. Pillai spoke of the urgent need to widen roads that might impede traffic flow when the work is on.
Utilities like cables, pipelines and posts too have to be shifted. The Shanmukham Road alignment will considerably benefit lawyers attending the High Court and district courts, apart from boat commuters and Goshree islanders.
Former Senior Town Planner and former member secretary of the GCDA and Trivandrum Development Authority, K. Joseph Alexander, said that the estimated cost of Rs.3,000 crore is not too high, considering the huge socio-economic and environmental benefits of the project.
“It would be ideal if the metro goes underground as it passes through Shanmukham Road. Shops near metro stations will considerably benefit from the shopping by commuters,”

So far a new MD hasn't been appointed for the Airport Company. I would like to know the status of the IPO and whether NRI'S like me will be able to buy them or will they bought by corporates who have vested interest in other airport projects eho are engineering a hostile takeover plus the various expansions projects are in limbo. These projects can benefit from Indian investors like Tata,Reliance,GVK,GMR etc and their network and technical expertise.
Does anybody have any news?

Airport runway work rescheduled
Nedumbassery: Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) has introduced a new schedule for maintenance work by which re-carpeting of the runway would be carried out in a phased manner, avoiding a partial closedown of the airport. This will reduce the operational difficulties faced by airlines during the period.
C. G. Krishnadas Nair, managing director of the CIAL, told mediapersons on Friday that as per the new plan, the re-carpeting work on the 3,400-metre long runway would be carried out in three stages with the division of work into 1,000 metres, 1,600 metres and 800 metres.
Earlier, there were reports that the airlines operating from the airport would have to reschedule their services leading to operational delays with the partial closedown. Some of the airline companies had expressed reservations about it. Last month, a major airline operating in the domestic sector suspended its services from here. Mr. Nair said that the CIAL would begin a three-year diploma course in aircraft maintenance engineering under the auspices of the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and without collecting exorbitant fees from students.

The joint venture between Container Corporation of India (Concor) and the Fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT) to set up a Container Freight Station would provide total logical facility for export and import shipments and enhance its commitment to customers.
The project, requiring 20-30 acres of land, would be within 10 km from Vallarpadam island, where the international container transshipment terminal is being constructed, a press release from Concor said.

Bus station at Thripunithura soon
Rs. 55.6-crore project to have commercial, residential facilities
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bus terminal to be built on 13.25 acres
Municipality to seek loan from HUDCO
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
KOCHI: A new bus terminal at Thripunithura, for which a token allocation was made in every annual budget for some years, has now reached the planning stage with the Greater Cochin Development Authority, making a presentation to the council members recently.
The project proposal of Rs. 55.6-crore, that includes the interest to be paid against a bank loan, has been presented in a viable package, that would leave the Municipality with a profit of Rs.6.5 crore.
Plan details
Explaining the details of the plan, V. Gopalakrishna Pillai, Town Planner at GCDA, said that after providing for detailed common infrastructure, the area would have a commercial and residential facility.
The highlight of the proposal is the 21 m wide road parallel to the railway line connecting the Kochi Refinery Road and the Hill Palace Road on the western side of the railway track.
The four-lane road will have two service roads of 10 metre width on the side of the bridges at both ends that will provide the connection for vehicles to enter the main road to the railway station.
The multi-function bus terminal package would be built in 13.25 acres.
The actual bus terminal will be formed in 3.75 acres that would also have an autorickshaw and taxi stand.
Land acquisition
The proposal also provides for land acquisition. Seventeen families who would be displaced would be rehabilitated in the area itself.
The plan provides for four acres land for commercial activity which is expected to provide returns to the Municipality.
There are advertisement spaces to sell and besides, the Municipality would also collect Rs. 1 crore yearly with bus user fee.
The new terminal had become necessary considering the high-level traffic on the narrow roads leading to the bus terminal.
However, the existing terminal will be maintained for the buses ending at Thripunithura.
B. S. Nandanan, vice-chairman of the Thripunithura Municipality, said that the proposal has been sent for Government approval and is expected to come through fast.
When it comes through, the Municipality will seek loan from HUDCO, he added.

It was reported that this lead to the sacking of the MD Sriram Bharat. With an
experienced person at the helm these issues can be tided over. Particularly
it should not be difficult to get an out-of-court settlement with HUDCO. Then
the rest of the problems will be easily solved as the IPO will raise the funds
for those projects. But it certainly needs a dynamic MD.
One important addition, it was under the stewardship of VJ Kurien that
CIAL achieved its best. But as soon as Achuthanandan arrived at the helm
VJK was sent off and after a long gap Sriram Bharat took charge. Now
even he is sacked due to the lack of performance.
It is clear that all the talk about the so called "InKeL" is just hogwash. InKeL (which is modeled
on CIAL) will never be trusted by any investor when the LDF govt has only managed to
put the original profitable company into trouble by making political appointments to the top.
It is clear that InKel will be forced to take up projects which otherwise would have
no takers and end up as another white elephant in the "stable".
The problem is with mixing politics and economics. There can only be an overall
guidance from politics and not intervention in every bit. At least some in LDF thinks that
they can promote "equitable" development by forcing funds thru govt controlled
companies for worthless investments in places which have no scope for such a thing.
This is the key reason why after every LDF rule we have an economy gasping
for breath.

Ernakulam will be the least affected. Though land deals are mainly in Ernakulam
the proportion of misdeeds are less. This is a large number of deals in Kochi
involve big players with good credentials like Sobha, DLF, ETL, Parsvnath. Except
Trissur, in other districts such companies are very very rare and most of the land deals
involve hawala money from Gulf. This is maximum in Malappuram, Kannur, Kozhikode
and other places which banks on NRI money. Kochi does not have a money-order
economy compared to the investments (both NRI and otherwise) it receive.
See the data on Gulf remittances.
NRIs, a big revenue source for Kerala
Staff Reporter
NRI remittances in 2007 was Rs. 24,525 crore
Household remittances stood at Rs.7,965 crore
KOCHI: The total remittances to Kerala from abroad in 2007 stood at a staggering Rs.24,525 crore, a study conducted by the Thiruvananthapuram-based Centre for Development Studies revealed.
According to the study, the latest in a working paper series on migration monitoring studies co-authored by K.C. Zachariah and S. Irudaya Rajan, this amounted to 20.2 per cent of the Net State Domestic Product of Kerala in 2007.
More significantly, it constituted more than 28 per cent of the State’s revenue receipts and was 3.85 times more than the amount the State received from the Central government.
Malappuram tops
As expected, Malappuram topped the list in terms of remittances received with over Rs.4,600 crore, accounting for 19 per cent of the total remittance. Kozhikode with about Rs.3,163 crore (12.9 per cent), Thrissur with Rs.2,967 crore (12.1 per cent) and Thiruvananthapuram with Rs.2,501 crore (10.2 per cent) came next in the list.

And finally AAI is calling tenders for RADAR at Cochin. Being India's 7th busiest
airport one wonders what AAI was doing with Cochin all these 9 years.
Finally there seems to be movement forward for all the aeronautical projects at CIAL.
Being an MD in charge, CGK Nair could do this much in a short time. Govt better be
careful while deciding the next MD. One hopes that CIAL gets guidance from CGK Nair,
(former chief of HAL Bangalore) in future too as he is a director board member of CIAL.

Most importantly, CIAL must end the dispute with HUDCO even if it is by bringing in
GVK or GMR into it. But it must never give a controlling stake to HUDCO.
BTW - GVK, GMR and Reliance (both Anil and Mukesh folds) are hot after CIAL stakes.
Being the second most profitable airport company in the world it is only
natural to bring in investment from biggies like GMR or Reliance and exclude firms like
HUDCO from having a stake.

KOCHI: Visitors to the Marine Drive might soon be able to use a two-kilometre-long walkway extending from Rajendra Maidan to the first of three Goshree Bridges.
The Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA), which maintains the Marine Drive walkway, has proposed to build a bridge over the Market Canal, connecting the Royal Musical Walkway to the walkway on the western side of Subhash Park, ending at Rajendra Maidan. The Cochin Corporation had earlier opposed the move stating it would spoil the park.
V. Gopalakrishnan, Senior Town Planner, GCDA, said the authority had reclaimed the area through which the park’s walkway has been laid. “Similarly, we have asked our engineering wing to prepare an estimate for the project aimed at extending the Marine Drive walkway up to the Goshree Bridge on the northern side.
The design for the extension will also take note of the need to cross over the building that houses the boat jetty office of the Kerala Shipping and Inland Navigation Corporation.”
GCDA has also proposed to remove unauthorised vendors who block the smooth passage of vehicles and pedestrians on the walkway’s northern side.
The authority plans to set up a system to ensure the maintenance of the walkway, which is a favourite place for families and youth. For this, it might seek the help of sponsors or private-boat operators.
Mr.Gopalakrishnan said private boat-jetties made using wooden planks should be dismantled and boats be berthed at the new boat jetty getting ready near the Rainbow Bridge.
“We have sought the help of the Cochin Port Trust in removing the unsafe jetties,” he said. As of now, the walkway needs urgent repair, as most of the wooden benches are broken and many areas at the three entrances are ill-lit.
The Royal Musical Walkway maintained by the District Tourism Promotion Council is better maintained.

As part of finding a global market for Kerala tourism, the Tourism Department is planning to organise a `Global Kerala Alliance in Tourism’ (GKAT) in Kochi in December, Home and Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said on Saturday.
What the department is planning is a participatory venture involving NRKs, Malayali organisations abroad and other experts to promote the state’s tourism possibilities.
“We are planning to use the facilities of the NORKA for the GKAT. The report has been finalised,” Kodiyeri Balakrishnan told reporters here.
During 2008-09, the state government expected to get Central assistance worth Rs 75 crore for tourism projects such as the Sarovaram Nature Park and Ashtamudi Tourism Circuit.
The Tourism Department will also try for an additional Rs 78 crore assistance from the NABARD, and the State Government.

Kerala likely to get eight new SEZs
Thiruvananthapuram, May 27 : The Kerala government is planning to forward eight applications for the establishment of Special Economic Zones (SEZ) to the centre, an official said here Tuesday.
The state already has one SEZ at Kochi, and 11 approved and two approved in principle zones.
Speaking to reporters here, State Industries Minister Elamram Kareem denied reports that there had been a difference of opinion between Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan and himself over the delay in clearing 17 pending applications.
"Of the pending applications, we found that only eight have acquired the land and the rest are in the process of buying land. So we have more or less decided that we will forward the applications of the eight who have land to the centre," said Kareem.
"The SEZs whose applications are likely to be forwarded include those for IT, bio-technology and electronics," he added.
In the past month, opposition leader Oommen Chandy had lashed out at the government for holding back the applications for SEZs. http://www.newkerala.com/one.php?action=fullnews&id=65458

LDF Govt wooing private investments in Kerala
Thiruvananthapuram (PTI): CPI-M led LDF government in Kerala is in the process of wooing private investments to the tune of Rs.10,000 crore and also plans a mega joint venture project with Russian based company Roseboron to set up a 10,000 tonne capacity titanium sponge unit, State Industries Minister Elamram Kareem said on Tuesday.
As part of encouraging private investments, government had already signed a MOU with Shoba Groups to set up Shoba Hightech City at Kochi with an investment of Rs.5000 crores, the Minister told a press conference held in connection with the second anniversary of LDF rule.
The single window clearance committee headed by Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan would meet soon to consider the projects of Shoba group, he said.

You seem to have good experience with skyscraperforums. I have never been
able to contribute one such so far. Good find !
Thanks!
Also hope this one hasnt been posted so far. This is Chakolas Bayview that is coming up on Thevara waterfront (Next to Skyline Homestead). This isnt 20+ storeys but supposed to be a high-end apartment. The quoted base rate is 6000 Rs/Sqft with Rs 75 extra per each upper floor. Just to give an idea about where rates are going!

This is not yet uploaded at Chakolas site (their web site is not good) but got it from a friend of mine.

I also heard something about a project by Casino that is coming up in Thevara. A residential project with rates 7000+ per sq ft. Anybody knows about that?
Such projects seem to go by invitation only.
Cheers!

There were queries here on the location of Muthoot's business hotel.
Muthoot group disclosed that it is near the "entry point of Smart City".
Construction has already started on this.
Now, where is that supposed to be ?? Does anyone local know where
the "entry point of Smart City" is ??
Wikimapia demarcation would be appreciated :thankyouthankyou:
Seems like (from the information got from localities) Muthoot business hotel is coming at Padamukal(Kakkanad)…. near Jayraj Flats... Have already heard a news that a luxury Business hotel is coming at Padamukal.. and the tag "entry point of Smart City" clearly fits for Padamukal....

Thanx Nhoj. Padamukal is a little away from Smart city, isn't it ? There are many
one 5 star deluxe hotels coming up at Kakkanad. You can find them on wikimapia.
Do you know where the 4-lane for Smart city starts. My guess is that may be where
Muthoot is likely to be found. Keep in mind that PWD has changed the alignment of road
becoz of problems faced by TECOM in getting SEZ status due to the old
alignment.
New Ind Express - May 24 2008
The existing PWD road connects Brahmapuram and Karimugal. Earlier, the Union Government has given SEZ status to 136 acres handed over to the Tecom.
For Tecom to apply for SEZ status for the remaining 100 acres, this PWD road is the main hindrance.
Mons Joseph has already directed the PWD officials to prepare a plan for the alternative road.

I was at Kakkanad last week, and saw an archway with 'Entrance to Smart City' written on it. It was by SmartCity Cochin itself. If I remember correctly, it was at IMG junction (as marked on wikimapia), very near to Civil Station.

I believe the 4 lane starts from Chittetukara on Sea-port airport road. That's close to Sahara grace and the trans asia tower.

Tier 1 Indian cites to lose IT jobs to tier 2 cities
Kochi, May 29 (IANS) In five years, 1.7 million jobs in Information Technology (IT) sector in India will move out of tier 1 cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore and Hyderabad, to tier 2 cities, Siddhartha Bhattacharya, Infopark’s chief executive officer, said here. Bhattacharya was speaking Wednesday at a discussion organised by The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE), a global not-for-profit organisation promoting entrepreneurship. Infopark at Kochi is a state government-owned IT Park.
It is the better quality of life and lower operating cost that are attracting the IT companies to these cities, he said quoting research reports.
He said among the upcoming IT destinations, Kochi has many inherent advantages.
“The data transmission cost from Kochi is low. Seventy-five percent of the country’s data traffic goes out from Kochi. VSNL has a 15 gigabyte gateway here. The electricity and water tariffs are one of the lowest among all the states. Compared to Bangalore, house rent is low in Kochi. The attrition rates in IT companies are below 10 percent.”
At present around 40 companies in the Infopark employ around 7,000 people. “In next four years we expect the number of companies to go up seven to eight times.”
He said that Kerala has the highest density of IT and science professionals. “The state’s infrastructure is pretty strong, especially in telecommunication sector,” he added.
Infopark is in the process of coming out with a dedicated incubator to help start up companies. “This is an early life support system for start ups. We will help them with issues like government clearance, finance and also help them expand,” he added.

Cochin pins revenue growth aims on duty-free
http://www.dfnionline.com/article/Cochin-pins-revenue-growth-aims-on-duty-free-1856730.html
The airport hopes that its duty-free operation will soon account for 40% of total airport revenues
Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) is hoping to attract new airlines by reducing landing charges with the help of its growing duty-free business. Speaking at the Gate One2One conference at the TFWA Asia Pacific show earlier this month, CIAL general manager commercial V Suresh Babu reported that duty-free revenue at the Kerala airport accounts for 30% of total airport revenues at present, and that the airport hopes to grow that figure to 40% with planned changes to the airport layout.
Babu said: “We want to be the first airport in India with no landing charges…Indian airports on average generate 70% of revenues through aeronautical operations and 30% through non-aeronautical operations. At Cochin we generate 42% through non-aeronautical. We have identified three areas to grow non-aeronautical revenue, of which duty-free is one. We are aiming to increase dwell time by redeveloping the airport layout, and to expand the area devoted to duty-free.”
Alpha Asia operates the duty-free business at Cochin under the Alpha Kreol fascia, through a management contract with CIAL. Alpha Asia managing director Paul Topping told DFNIonline that the business has been achieving “phenomenal” growth as a result of extending its product offer and improving customer service. He also attributed growth to the big space CIAL had given the retailer. Alpha Kreol grew sales by over 40% last year, while traffic at the airport grew by about 25%.
Cochin is the fourth biggest airport in India, behind Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai, and was the first greenfield airport operated by a private company in India.

AI flights from Kerala, AP get cheaper on ATF cut
29 May, 2008, 0232 hrs IST,Chanchal Pal Chauhan, TNN
NEW DELHI: Air India will shortly announce up to 83% reduction in basic fares from Kerala (Kochi, Kozhikoda, and Trivandrum) and Andhra Pradesh (Hyderabad) after the two states reduced sales tax on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) to 4%.
Amidst spiralling crude oil prices, air fares have doubled in the last one year, but Air India has now taken the lead to slash fares at airports where the tax on ATF has been reduced.
