Brahmapuram a milestone for Kochi
BRAHMAPURAM: It’s not the stink of garbage, which one may expect, that welcomes you to the solid waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram but lathi-wielding policemen, who stop you at the gate and ask for the identity card.
As you approach the tipping floor, the stench of the garbage slowly engulfs you. A handkerchief worn around the nose will not save you from the pungent smell.
Yet, it is not nauseating as the stench that one experiences when passing through the Padiyath dumping yard near Convent junction.
The foul smell fades as you move towards the rear side of the plant and the air smells normal as anywhere in the city.
The blue-coloured newly-acquired covered vehicles of the Kochi Corporation could be seen queuing outside the tipping floor to transfer the heaps of trash collected from various parts of the city.
On the other side of the spacious yard, a front-end loader was busy churning the waste as steam escaped from the garbage heap due to the exothermic process.
Flies were swarming all over the garbage heaps. They hit the visitors to the yard quite often. You need both your hands to keep them away from landing on the face as you take a look at the various stages of processing of waste. A large number of crows were fearlessly picking food from the piled-up waste.
The plant is ready now for inauguration. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan will formally inaugurate the plant on Friday at 11 a.m.
All the major works of the plant have been completed and what remains are some minor civil works, said M.P. Fernando, Director (Operations) of the Hyquip Technologies, the engineering, procurement and construction partner of the Andhra Pradesh Technology Development Corporation (APTDC). The APTDC is implementing the project for the Kochi Corporation.
The plant will be able to start the conversion of the first load of garbage into manure by June 23. It requires 40 days for converting the garbage into manure.
The first load of garbage reached the plant on May 16, said S. Kesavan Nair, general manager of Hyquip Technologies. There is around 40 per cent moisture in the garbage. There will be 60 per cent reduction of volume of garbage as bacterial action starts. The bacteria needs 24 hours to act on garbage, said Rahul Reddy, general manager, operations.
The exposed waste will be fully covered with dry waste to keep the flies away. The leachate that drains out of the heaps are collected in a 10,000-litre tank to be pumped over the heaps again for speeding up the bacterial action. Once the operation goes full throttle, the plant would be able to treat around 300 tonnes of garbage, Mr. Nair said.

CIAL to set up academy
KOCHI: The Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) is all set to form a management academy offering various courses in airport management.
This was one of the major decisions taken at a directors’ board meeting of the airport company held on Wednesday. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan presided over the meeting.
The academy would offer postgraduate course in business management with specialisation in airport management as also graduation in airport management.
Besides, the academy would also offer courses in terminal management, fire and safety service, cargo management, ground handling and operations management.
The realisation that there were not many institutions offering airport management-oriented courses in the State prompted the board to take such a decision.
Another significant decision taken by the board was to launch helicopter services in association with Bharat Airways Private Limited to Munnar, Sabarimala and Kumarakom.
The airport would have to provide parking space for the helicopter at a charge. In addition to this, it would also be entitled to royalty.
Meanwhile, initial works on the proposed aviation academy are underway.
The block being set up for the academy would be completed by October this year. The academy, among other things, would offer pilot training.
The board also decided to appoint a consultancy for setting up an aircraft maintenance repair and overhaul unit under the Cochin International Aviation Services Limited, a subsidiary company of the CIAL.
Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran and Fisheries Minister S. Sarma also attended the board meeting.

Smart City master plan to be unveiled this month
Yesterdays Manorama reports that Smart City master plan will be unveiled
in June, and work to start in October. This news from Hindu says
TECOM is waiting for SEZ status as a single entity for the whole land.
Work on SmartCity Kochi project to begin by year-end
R. Balaji
Malta, June 17 Work on SmartCity Kochi, the integrated township with a SEZ for knowledge-based industries, will be launched by the year-end, according to Mr Fareed Abdulrahman, Chief Executive Officer, SmartCity (Dubai) FZ-LLC.
Talking to a group of reporters from India on a tour organised by the company to witness the launch of SmartCity Malta, he said SmartCity was committed to the development of the Kochi project.
The company is looking at setting up a 250-acre facility involving investments of over $350 million to create a modern township with residential, commercial and office space for IT, ITeS and knowledge-based industries that would generate over 90,000 jobs.
The SmartCity Kochi has the SEZ approval for a 100-acre parcel of land and has been asked by the authorities to submit a separate application for an adjacent portion, separated by a water body.
The company is particular that the project is approved as a single SEZ, and is willing to accept whatever conditions are laid down — such as linking the two parcels of land with a tunnel or a bridge for them to be considered a contiguous area.
The company is awaiting the decision from Indian authorities, he said. http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/2008/06/18/stories/2008061851492100.htm

Actors with a D T S studio
IndiaGlitz [Thursday, June 19, 2008]
The leading actors of Malayalam, Dileep and Suresh Gopi has joined with actor - producer Lal to set up a D T S studio at kochy. The studio named as D L S studios, has already started functioning. Prithvi's 'One Way Ticket' will be the first movie to make a D T S mixing at D L S studios.
Producer Lal already owns a leading film studio "Lal Media" at Ernakulam, where the post production works of almost all the important commercial films in Mollywood are done.
With the arrival of such new equipments and studios, Mollywood will prove self sufficient in film making technologies, within a short time. This is also important considering the latest developments associated with MACTA, where the national unions are planning to resist the works of Mollywood films, outside Kerala.

Is this the news ?
I guess there is a case in High court. Very little land needs to be taken
over - about 8 acres or so. The judgement is due soon - initially it was
supposed to be out by June 4th, but it did not happen. Once the judgement
favorable govt can take over. Judgement is likely to be favorable as
it is just a small minority with vested interests trying to throw spanner
into the works. Over 97% of land has been taken over and work has
already commenced. These anti-socials are seeking change of alignment
after this and it s likely to be rejected. More pressure must be put on the govt to
take over the land.

Holiday Group to invest Rs 1,000 crore in Kerala
Kochi | Friday, Jun 20 2008 IST
UAE-based Holiday Group is planning to invest around Rs 1,000 crore in infrastructure, housing and hospitality sectors in the next five years in Kerala. Speaking to reporters here last evening, Group Chairman C C Thambi said the construction of a five-star deluxe resort, which would have 50 cottages, at Bekkal near Kasargod had started and would be operational by 2009.
He said the Group would launch its major housing projects in Marine Drive, Kadavantra, Maradu, Kakkanad, Kalamasery and Nedumbassery in the city tomorrow.
Keeping in mind the growing opportunities in the tourism sector, Mr Thambi said the company was planning to start five-star hotels in Kochi, Kumarakom, Kovalam and Thiruvananthapuram. He said large shopping malls in major cities like Kochi, Thrissur and Kozhikode and intergrated townships in Kalamassery and Nedumbassery were also in the pipeline besides starting theme restaurants and motels on national highways.

Meanwhile, the widening work of the Trissur-Kochi stretch of NH 47 is progressing very rapidly. I passed through the road twice last week, and there was construction almost along the entire distance! Flyovers at Angamaly, Chalakkudy and Aluva are also being constructed.
As for the waste management problem, the district administration has started a blog to receive comments and suggestions from the public about the same. Launched yesterday, the blog hasn't been active at all. If forumers here have opinions regarding the issue, please make your voices heard.

Is this the actual picture of the new bridge? It hardly has enough width for 2 cars to pass by. It shows the lack of planning and vision that exists even for an expansion project. This is just a bridge for bridge sake and except that it will not help to alleviate any real traffic problems of the City! When will we ever get good master planners with the vision and the guts to execute long term strategic projects in infrastructure.

Vallarpadam works to be speeded up
Staff Reporter
KOCHI: With the Union Minister for Shipping and Surface Transport T.R. Baalu set to review the progress of the proposed Vallarpadam International Container Transhipment Terminal early next month, the district administration and other authorities concerned are set to intensify the work on the rail and road connectivity for the project.
The minister is expected to make the visit in the first week of July, N. Ramachandran, chairman, Cochin Port Trust (CPT), said at a meeting held here on Saturday.
The High Court having delivered its verdict on rehabilitation of those evicted for the connectivity project, the district administration is preparing to provide the much needed momentum to the connectivity works.
District Collector M. Beena said that the district administration would spare no efforts to ensure speeding up the works related to the project.
However, the National Highway Authority of India officials said that though 98 per cent of the land required for the 17.20-km four-lane highway had been acquired, work could not be started in many stretches owing to protests by the people. The district administration would take emergency steps and resolve the issues connected with the acquired land within the next five days. The CPT would approach the court for vacating the stay on cases relating to reclaiming land from the backwaters for the highway connectivity.

That ICTT will be ready by Nov 2009 is for sure. If rail-road connectivity is not
completed Union govt will have to shell out a 100s of crores as compensation
to Dubai Ports World. It is part of the agreement. This foolish state govt better
act fast. Key problem is in not handing over rehabilitation land to the evictees.
started in 2006, there was enough time not only hand over land but even
to build houses if it wanted. Now the situation is that not even land is ready !!
This is the problem with govt projects , when those projects will come live even an astrologer cant predict ....
Here we are little bit lucky coz there is immense pressure from Central Govt for expediting the project , else these things will remain in paper like others.
Smart City is also lucky coz there was lots of political prestige to be gained , else fate wud have been same like other State Govt IT projects .. Even land acqusition wont get complete , Infopark is facing same fate with its 167 acre expansion which is depending on govt.
I am worried abt Metro Rail , this is one project in Kochi where its totally state govt . God knows when those people will act..

Specialised centre for Athletics coming up
KSAA plans Sports City
Principal Correspondent
KOCHI: Minutes after taking over as the new president of the Kerala State Athletics Association (KSAA), Baby Mathew announced a major project for athletes in the State.
“We plan to build a Sports City in Kochi. With many major events coming here, we need a permanent training centre, a specialised centre with all modern facilities,” said Mathew, who is also the Managing Director of Jeevan TV, here on Saturday.
“We will need around 20 acres for the project and we will be tapping various sources for funds,” he added. http://www.hindu.com/2008/06/22/stories/2008062256441800.htm
KCA's Cricket Academy to be at SH Thevara
Being the location of upcoming international cricket stadium Kochi is best suited
for state's cricket academy too. Land for cricket stadium has been identified
at Tripunithra. Govt has to expedite sanction to start construction.
KCA’s new academy at SH College
KOCHI: The Kerala Cricket Association will start a full-fledged cricket academy at the Sacred Heart College in Thevara shortly.
“We will have a chief coach — a former player from outside the State — and specialists for batting, bowling and physical fitness,” said the Kerala Cricket Association secretary, T.C. Mathew, after the association’s Central Council meeting here on Friday evening.
“Since Sacred Heart has a nice gym and good facilities for players’ accommodation nearby, we have selected it. And for matches, we will be using the St. Paul’s College ground,” he said.
Apart from senior players, the KCA plans to pick and train a pool of players between 19 and 25 years at the Kochi centre. Plans are also on to start smaller academies in the State’s three zones and to develop a ground at Kottayam after signing an MoU with the Mahatma Gandhi University.

Consultants suggest PPP route for Kochi cruise terminal
The much awaited feasibility report and the business plan for the proposed international cruise terminal and public plaza has been submitted to the Cochin Port Trust, wherein consultants have suggested setting up the facilities in public-private-partnership (PPP) mode under the build-operate-transfer (BOT) route. The report, prepared by Mir Projects and Consultants Pvt Ltd, Kochi, and TranSystems, Virginia, US, has estimated an investment of Rs 375 crore for the project. ...
The project comprises building a world-class cruise terminal, a Kerala Village as a major tourist attraction, a 238-room hotel complex, shopping mall and office complex as well as a parking garage.
The port has earmarked 6.71 hectares of land for the project
The total construction cost will add up to more than Rs 285 crore. The study report has put the cost of building the cruise berth at Rs 61.22 crore, cruise terminal building at Rs 40.94 crore, Kerala Village at Rs 6 crore, shopping mall and office tower at Rs 79.57 crore and hotel complex at Rs 83.53 crore. Walkways, a park and bus circuit will be additional facilities.
The consultants pointed out that cruise tourism has emerged as the fastest growing sector of the global tourism industry over the past decade. Among Indian ports, Kochi has been the cruise port in India with maximum cruise calls. The port, located close to the international trunk sea route from Europe to Far East/Australia with a deviation of only 72 nautical miles, prompts cruise liners to take advantage of the tourist attraction.
The port has modern deep water facilities and further development will facilitate the handling of bigger cruise vessels with 360 metres length and beam over 40 metres.
The current financial year will see the port receive 42 vessels, the highest ever in India.

We are really unlucky to have such an idiotic govt who is not only good for nothing but also anti social which encourages strikes and hartals more than any constructive activity. Basic theory is that if communism has to survive there should be poverty and unemployment. When congress rules they will oppose whatever investments they bring and when they rule everything gets confined to papers without giving any sanctions. I really feel ashamed to be a Keralite

A nice article on Marina - surely read it full.
India, Mumbai particularly, has a strong boating heritage with the third oldest yacht club in the world, the Royal Bombay Yacht Club, set up in 1846.
Yet, the first marina development is only just underway – the Bolgatty Island marina in Cochin, Kerala. Awarded through a global bidding process undertaken by KITCO the project was won by Gulf Marinas, a leading marina manufacturer based in Sharjah whose Indian partners are Ocean Blue Marinas.
Kochi (known in Colonial times as Cochin) is situated on the south-west coast of the Indian peninsula in the scenic and prosperous state of Kerala.
Its strategic importance over the centuries gave shelter to Arabs, British, Chinese, Dutch, and Portuguese sailors, all of whom have left indelible marks on the region’s development.
Kochi has emerged as the commercial and industrial force and is perhaps the second most important city on the west coast of India (after Mumbai/Bombay). It boasts a world class port and international airport that link it to many major cities worldwide.

Govt. should take stern steps to face hartals: HC
Posted: 23 Jun 2008 04:42 PM CDT
AJ: The Kerala High court observed that government should take stern steps to face the frequent hartals in the state. In an oral observation, a Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice H L Dathu and Justice A K Basheer, expressed displeasure at the attitude of the government in not giving ''due regard'' to the court orders. The observations were made while considering a contempt petition filed by an NGO 'Proper Channel'. The case has been posted after a month. Earlier, the court had issued directions including calling paramilitary forces to combat the hartal violence.

Total IT export from Kerala is Rs. 1568 crores : Chief minister
Kerala's IT sector growing: Achuthanandan
Tuesday, June 24, 2008
Thiruvananthapuram (PTI): With many companies opening units in Kerala, the IT sector of the state has been on a growth trajectory, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan informed the state assembly on Monday.
The boom in the IT sector has enhanced job availability and has boosted software exports in the last two years, the Chief minister said.
To expand the IT infrastructure in the state, the government has embarked upon a project to create IT parks in all districts, besides strengthening facilities at Technopark near the state capital and Infopark in Kochi, Achuthanandan said in a reply furnished in the house.
These projects would add 88 lakh square feet to the existing IT base, he said.
In the state-managed Technopark and Infopark, 71 new companies had been set up during last two years, creating 22,517 direct employment and at least three times more indirect jobs, he said.
The state exported software products worth valued at Rs 1,568 crore in 2007-08.

KOCHI: Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Mons Joseph’s statement that the department was willing to take over the repair and maintenance of some of the roads of the Kochi Corporation has been greeted with enthusiasm by the civic administrators.
Welcoming the minister’s proposal, Mayor Mercy Williams said that the corporation was willing to hand over the responsibility of a few roads which were handling huge volumes of traffic.
“The corporation is willing to hand over some roads along which buses are operating. As there is heavy traffic on such roads, its maintenance has been a matter of concern for the civic body,” said Ms. Williams.
The traffic flow along the main roads and also the sub-roads have increased considerably over the years and the corporation has been spending huge amounts for its repair, she said.

KOCHI: The Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) carried out works on the rail connectivity for the proposed Vallarpadam International Container Transhipment Terminal in Vaduthala amidst protest by a section of landowners on Tuesday.
Police protection was provided to the work as requested by the RVNL authorities. Four landowners, whose vacant land had already been acquired after issuing warrants last month, staged the protest. Kochi, the new job destination
G. Krishnakumar
Talent crunch is not confined to the real estate and information technology sectors.
KOCHI: Titu Joseph is never tired of working extended hours in an office dealing with supply of medical equipment in the city.
Even though his main role is that of an office boy, the young lad from Kumaranalloor in Kottayam never refuses to take up an extra assignment given by his boss.
Eleven months after he landed in this ‘city of future’, Titu is excited about the numerous opportunities opening up before him.
“I expect a salary hike next month. Now, I am getting Rs.2,500 a month and the management provides food and accommodation. I save at least Rs.1,500 for my parents back home.”
Like Titu Joseph, thousands from across the State have made Kochi their home away from home.
The city is fast becoming a hot destination for the migrants who leave their homes in search of work. Agrees Jithin Menon, a marketing professional: “I was in Chennai for two years. But later I decided to shift to Kochi as the climate in Chennai was unbearable. My native place is Kannur and I have no plans to go back there. I wish to settle here with my family. Kochi has plenty of opportunities,” he says.
The openings in the job market are not confined to IT and ITES sectors alone. Real estate boom coupled with the increase in demand for skilled workers in private companies have turned Kochi into a sought-after city.
Sebi Thomas, a builder in the city, elaborates: “I am short of employees for doing wood work.
The bigger players in the field offer attractive salary (up to Rs.25,000 a month) for masons and support staff. I often meet the gap by bringing in workers from my native town Pala.”
Talent crunch is not confined to the real estate and IT sectors.
The hotel industry players refer to the growing need for skilled staff for house keeping and food and beverages service. Nandu Menon, a consultant in the hotel industry, said that the salary levels had gone up even in the entry level thanks to the city becoming a hot destination for big conventions and conferences. “The industry is lapping up every available talent,” he said.

Workers are lucky to get daily work
They borrow tools at Rs. 10 each
KOCHI: Kaloor, 7.30 a.m.: Rakkamma and her husband Muthayya have been waiting here for nearly an hour.
As the city rubbed away its slumber and woke up to the bustle of another hectic day, the couple vainly scanned the passersby. They looked into the eyes of those reaching Kaloor with a silent question. Is there a call for a job?
No. It is yet another day without work for them.
The clinking of iron trays, shovel and pickaxe of workers is drowned in the sea of chatter of those who have assembled there since early morning.
They bargain in Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, Oriya and Assamese…the lingo is undistinguishable in the hard bargain for a living. They also pick up a few Malayalam words in their first days of arrival itself. The crucial lessons in the art of survival in an alien place.
Raghu, an Andhraite, reached Kochi three days ago to join the large contingent of migrants who have reached Kochi. It is estimated that there are around five lakh migrant labourers in the district. It is the booming real estate business that is luring the workforce to the city. http://www.hindu.com/2008/06/27/stories/2008062760811100.htm

House of Patel’s US$25 million ‘Natasha Riverdale’ project - 75 percent sold out in less than two months since its UAE launch
Posted: 26-06-2008 , 09:37 GMT
Patel Real Estate Developers (PRDPL), the real estate arm of ‘House of Patels’, one of India’s leading business conglomerates has announced that it has sold 75 percent of the ‘Natasha Riverdale’, a US$ 25 million plotted development project spread across 60 acres near Kochi, Kerala in less than two months since its launch in the UAE. Investment into this project can be done by Arab nationals and other expatriates in the UAE after fulfilling the basic documentation requirements.
Thailand based Banyan Tree Spa operator has also identified the location for their upcoming spa development. Just 26 kilometers from Kochi city, this upscale community project will have a waterfront area for all plots, 5 acres of manmade lake, 9/7 metres wide internal roads, marina, and facilities for various outdoor activities, water sports and fishing among other features.
“Natasha Riverdale is the only project in Kerala designed with boat owner’s interest in mind there are 15,000 boat owners in Ernakulam city expected in the next 3 years. We are delighted to launch Natasha Riverdale our unique masterpiece amidst both individual and institutional investors in the Middle East. The project has two side river fronts and the land is full of palm trees and foliage. Kerala has experienced a growth rate of over 35 percent per annum in tourist inflow and this project will further grow the industry,” said A.S.Patel, Chairman, ‘House of Patels’.
Over the years, Kochi has emerged as the commercial and industrial capital of Kerala and is perhaps the second most significant city on the west coast of India (after Mumbai). Kochi is proud of its world class port and international airport that links it to many major cities worldwide.
A host of development projects are likely to transform Kochi into a key center of development in South India. An estimated investment of approximately US$10 billion is in the pipeline seeking to make Kerala an emerging hub of IT and sea-based industries. As per published reports, Tecom Investments has signed a $350 million SmartCity project in Kochi with the Kerala government. Furthermore, in 2005 DP World signed an agreement with the Cochin Port Trust (CoPT) to construct, develop and operate an international container transshipment terminal at Vallarpadam, Kochi, India.
“Kochi is arguably the ideal starting point for exploring the unfathomable diversity and beauty of Kerala, rated in the top three tourist destinations by the World Travel & Tourism Council and featured in National Geographic Traveler's '50 greatest places of a lifetime'. Our project is located near Kochi and would be the next – talk of the town destination in Kerala. This nature friendly project will also provide buyers to earn income from home stay tourism opportunity,” said Rajesh Pillai, Vice Chairman, House of Patel.
“Connected with wide tarred roads, life at Natasha Riverdale is just mesmerizing. Just 15 minutes by boat to Vembanadu lake, our waterfront plots spread across 60 acres at Poothotta Kochi, is divided into plots of around 50 cents each with waterfront area. One can make a farmhouse, use the club house and can also park the boat right in front of your house. With many flagship projects coming up in the neighbourhood, Natasha Riverdale would also serve as a highly lucrative investment option,” added Pillai.
Natasha Riverdale is strategically located in an area surrounded by developments like Brigade group’s Golf course.

KOCHI: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has been given the take-off signal to set up an electronics and avionics plant in Kasargod. HAL’s board of directors stamped its approval last week on a feasibility report prepared by a technical committee that visited the State in April.
The good news reached Kerala with a bonus informing the State about HAL’s plan to set up two more facilities in this investment- starved land.
“They want 100 acres of land in Kochi and about 200 acres in Palakkad. We’ve not been given the exact details. But HAL is serious about expanding operations,” a top official of the Industries Department said while confirming that the foundation stone will be laid “by Onam time”.
The presence of an airport and seaport is HAL’s prime interest in Kochi.
“The international airport (Nedumbassery) is strategically located to attract major companies to set up maintenance and overhaul facilities for Asian markets. HAL sees a tremendous possibility of partnering with these global names,” HAL sources pointed out.
And in Palakkad HAL finds scope to outsource metallurgical tasks like forging and casting to smallscale units in the district and in neighbouring Coimbatore.
From a Kerala point of view, the move underlines the strengthening bond between CPM Minister Elamaram Kareem and Defence Minister A K Antony marking the beginning of a pragmatic relation where both give more import to long-term growth targets than to short-term political goals.

Mini Ratna status for Cochin Shipyard
First company in state to get this
Ministry actively considering Cochin Shipyard IPO plan
2008-06-28 10:31:44 Source : The Hindu Business Line
Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways is ‘actively’ considering Cochin Shipyard Ltd’s (CSL) proposal to raise funds through an initial public offering (IPO) for the public sector shipyard’s expansion plans.
Cochin Shipyard has been planning to set up a third dry dock and a small ship division in place. “The expansion would require an expenditure of Rs 1,000-1,300 crore. The IPO proceeds would be used to part-finance this expansion proposal,” said sources.
The Shipping Ministry is also considering a proposal to confer Miniratna status to Cochin Shipyard, which would allow CSL more financial and operational autonomy.

SmartCity: work to begin by October

Government completes formalities for transfer of 100 more acres
More issues to be taken up at July 3 meet of director board
KOCHI: The construction work of SmartCity Kochi is expected to begin by October this year, said S. Sarma, Minister for Fisheries and Registration and chairman of SmartCity Kochi.
He was briefing the media here after the annual general meeting of SmartCity.
The State government has completed formalities on its part for transferring the remaining 100 acres needed for the project from the Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
Now it is for the promoters Tecom to follow up the procedure, Mr. Sarma said.
Tecom was faced with the difficulty of not being able to register the 236 acres identified for the SmartCity project. While 136 acres has been given the SEZ status, Tecom is seeking the same status for the remaining 100 acres.
Failing this, the company will have to go for separate registrations.
Issues such as setting up of an office and relocating the PWD road that passes through the project area will be taken up at the next director board meeting, to be held here on July 3, Mr. Sarma said.
He presided over the annual general meeting. Baju George, acting company secretary, SmartCity Kochi; Sreela, Additional Secretary, Government of Kerala; Midhun Beeru, business development manager, SmartCity Kochi; and Sulaiman Al-Riyami, business development manager, Tecom, attended the meeting.
The meeting approved the budget and accounts.
It also ratified the appointments of Ajayakumar, State IT Secretary, and Anirudha Damkey, director of finance, Tecom, as director board members at the second director board meeting.
Tecom had earlier appointed Colin Buchanan, one of the leading United Kingdom-based multi-disciplinary consultants handling town master planning, urban design and traffic engineering, as the master planner for the project. http://www.hindu.com/2008/07/01/stories/2008070160990100.htm

Five maritime universities proposed
G. KRISHNAKUMAR
Kochi is among the cities suggested for setting up a maritime university.
Kochi is among the five cities in the country short-listed for setting up a maritime university.
A Parliamentary committee has recommended that the remaining institutions should be established in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Vishakhapatnam, with clearly demarcated geographical jurisdiction.
The Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture, headed by senior CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury, recommended that the government consider bringing in fresh, comprehensive legislation for the creation of the universities.
“The most important point is to have multiple maritime universities to cater to the expanding sector as maritime trade is growing at the rate of 20 per cent every year,” the committee said.
The committee observed that a country like India with a large coastline did not boast a number of maritime universities to train engineers and officers when the sector is facing an acute shortage of manpower.
India is one of the largest maritime countries in the world with a strong, dedicated, efficient and reliable reservoir of officers and ratings of merchant navy, but it does not have a single maritime university to facilitate the needs of maritime and related sectors.
The committee suggested that there is the need for augmenting training capacity and capabilities in the country to meet the projected global shortage of 27,000 officers by 2015.
It is also necessary to increase the share of India in the world maritime manpower fleet from the current six per cent to at least 20 per cent.
The committee also felt that one university was not enough to serve the purpose of maritime studies and research. The panel remained unconvinced of the reasons for having a single university. It felt that the maritime university should cover the entire gamut of maritime activities and endeavour to deal with an exhaustive range of subjects other than shipping.
It has recommended that the term “maritime studies” be elaborated in the Bill to explain the scope of courses to be offered — maritime security; law; history; ocean engineering; exploitation of resources; ship and port management; maritime transport; and logistics and maritime insurance.
The objective of the proposed maritime university is to facilitate and promote maritime studies, research and extension work with focus on emerging areas of studies like oceanography; maritime history; maritime laws; maritime security; search and rescue; and transportation of dangerous cargo. It will also initiate studies in environmental studies and related fields.
Research facilities
The university will promote advanced knowledge by providing institutional and research facilities in such branches of learning as it may deem fit and make provisions for integrated courses in science and other key and frontier areas of technology and allied disciplines. The university will take appropriate measures for promoting innovations in the teaching-learning process, inter-disciplinary studies and research.

KOCHI: A meeting of the board of governors of Infopark held here on Thursday decided to set up three information technology parks modelled on it in Alappuzha and Thrissur districts. Government land has been identified for the proposed IT parks in Cherthala and Ambalapuzha in Alappuzha district and Koratty in Thrissur, District Collector M. MoU for bogie unit in Kerala

51 per cent stake for Railways in joint venture company
Company to be set up in six months
Joint working group to prepare the business plan
NEW DELHI: The Union Ministry of Railways and the Kerala government on Saturday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to form a joint venture company for fabrication of bogie frames for passenger coaches and wagons.
According to the MoU, inked by senior Railways and Kerala Government officials in the presence of Railways Minister Lalu Prasad and Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan here, Indian Railways will hold 51 per cent stake in the company and the remaining 49 per cent will be held by the Kerala Government. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Prasad said the foundations of the factory would be laid soon, for which the Kerala government had decided to give land free of cost. “This historical joint venture will benefit the people of Kerala as well as Indian Railways. In view of the rapid increase in passenger services, the need for additional passenger coaches is growing fast. Railways have a limited capacity to manufacture fabricated bogies; this capacity addition will help in meeting our future requirements,” Mr. Prasad said. The joint venture, to be constituted within the next six months, would come into existence in a phased manner. The factory for fabrication of bogie frames for passenger coaches and wagons would come up by utilising the land and other assets of Steel Fabrication Unit (SFU) and Autokast.
