I think it's is necessary that any claim be backed by facts and evidences. Otherwise, it'll just send the wrong idea out. Thereby, in future, it shall be required that claims be backed by valid evidences, unless otherwise in considered cases. The poster is trying to contradict my statement on commercial tax revenue from Kochi,
but has no sources to support his claim. Kindly delete this and all

The majority of the tax component is the cess and excise duty of fuel sold in the state. These petroleum companies have their regional offices in Eranakulam and they pay the tax for the fuel sold in all the 14 districts at Kochi.

Cochin Airport to have largest perishable cargo center in India
Posted: 7:34p.m IST, February 3, 2009

The CPC is a joint effort of Government of India through Agricultural and Food Promotion Export development Authority (APEDA) contributing Rs.13.20 crore and Government of Kerala through CIAL being built at a total cost of Rs. 24.00 crore.

Chief Minister says metro to be executed in public sector

Due to the failure of BOT model in Hyderabad metro, planning commissions
arguments have no support even in Union Ministry for Urban Development.
Final decision is pending with Union Cabinet.

City metro rail without private role: VS

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said in Delhi on Tuesday that the metro rail project in Kochi would be executed on the model of the Delhi metro rail, but without private partnership.

“I discussed with Sreedharan the details of the metro rail proposal for Kochi. As per our plans, the project would be in partnership between the Kerala government and the Central government without any private partnership,” he said.

Earlier in the day, he met Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Managing Director E. Sreedharan.

The Chief Minister’s assertion would provide an impetus to the long-pending project. The Planning Commission had all along been saying that the project would be feasible only with private participation, as a build operate transfer (BOT) venture. Land acquisition and preliminary work for the elevated light metro rail project would have progressed much by now, but for the commission opposing the execution of the project as a joint venture between the Centre and the State.

The State government is opposed to private participation since the cost of commuting would be very high and the government would have to give large tracts of land to the private firm to mobilise capital for the project. Moreover, no private player would take up the project unless the government promises to compensate it for any shortfall in the number of passengers.

The State government is for the State and Centre pooling in equity in a 15:15 ratio. Similarly, the two entities could pool in funds on a 10:15 ratio for subordinate debts (like land acquisition and tax). The balance 45 per cent amount could be raised as loan from the JBIC.

Transport planners say that metro rail is the sole alternative for Kochi city, which is witnessing a phenomenal growth in traffic because of inadequate public transport. The 650-odd private city buses cannot carry more than 8,000 passengers every hour per direction of traffic. A study by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation in 2005 had found that there would be 13,000 passengers per direction of traffic in Kochi by 2010. This would go up to 24,000 in 2025. The elevated light metro rail envisaged for Kochi can carry this many passengers and hence is a feasible project aimed at decongesting Kochi. The Aluva-Ernakulam-Thripunithura corridor is the most suited since it has the most number of commuters.

The metro rail system is very flexible and the number of coaches in each train can be increased from the three that has been proposed, to up to nine when there is an increase in passengers during peak hours and festival seasons.

KOCHI: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Monday directed the Southern Railway to complete the work of Pulleppady Railway over-bridge expeditiously, at any rate, within six months.

The directive was issued by the Bench consisting of Acting Chief Justice J B Koshy and Justice V Giri while recording the assurance given by chief engineer, Construction, Southern Railway, Thiruvananthapuram, that the work of the overbridge would be completed at the earliest.

According the chief engineer, the Tender Committee on January 27 recommended awarding the contract for the construction of the span over the railway line to M/s Skilled Construction Company, Kochi, for Rs 164.41 lakh and the acceptance letter would be sent to the contractor on Monday.

On the basis of the assurance, the court closed the proceedings in the public interest writ petition filed by the Kerala Chamber of Commerce and Industry for a direction to complete the construction of the overbridge expeditiously.

On January 19 the Bench had expressed its dissatisfaction over the slow progress in the construction of the overbridge.

The court said that there was dereliction of duty on the part of the Southern Railway officers.

The court also had directed the Railway authorities to inform the court all further developments on the issue.

KOCHI: The work of making the 10.368 km National Highway 47 between Vyttila and Aroor four-laned, is expected to be over by April 2010, the Project director and general manger (Technical) of the National Highway Authority of India, has informed the Kerala High Court.

This is in response to a query made by the High Court while considering a public interest writ petition, as to why the four-lane work, which began years ago, could not be completed.

According to the project director and GM, the work had been awarded in February 2004 to M/s Mecon-Gea JV for Rs 79.52 crores. As the contractor could not meet the deadline, the contract was terminated confiscating his security deposit of Rs 12 crores.

Though further tenders were invited twice, there were few bidders.

Kaloor-Kadavantra road renovation completed

City needs new roads and transportation modes: Paloli

Minister inaugurates renovated Kaloor-Kadavanthra Road

KOCHI: Kochi needs new roads and modes of transport to cater to the requirements of the people in the fast-developing city, Minister for Local Self-Government Paloly Mohammed Kutty, has said.

In turn, care must be taken to ensure that the development activities are beneficial to the common man, he said here on Tuesday, after inaugurating the renovated Kaloor-Kadavanthra Road. The road was renovated at a cost of Rs 3.58 crore, with bituminous macadam and bituminous concrete finish.

The Greater Cochin Development Authority Chairperson M.C. Josephine lauded contractor P.J. Jacob and his team of workers for the speedy road renovation and the quality with which the work has been done. “This would be turned into a model road. The footpaths and medians too will soon be renovated and the drains interconnected. Vehicle users, pedestrians and those staying on either side must ensure the road’s upkeep. Development works on the international stadium at Rameshwaram West and housing projects will soon be completed.”

Offering felicitations, Mayor Mercy Williams attributed the delays encountered in many road development projects to procedural problems. “We will soon undertake Rs 100-crore worth road development works. Steps are being taken to develop the Thammanam-Pullepady-Padma Junction Road and the Chilavanoor Bund Road that run parallel to the SA Road. Kochi needs a powerful agency to carry out road and bridge development works. For this, the GCDA can be merged with a Metropolitan Development Authority like the ones that exist in big cities.”

The GCDA is hamstrung by inadequate powers and Kochi needs a project like the one in Thiruvananthapuram to develop infrastructure in the State capital, said K. Babu MLA. Senior Town Planner Gopalakrishna Pillai was among the others who spoke.

No idea what's hampering it. Is it the issue with regard to giving license to Pantaloon
retail in Kerala ? Their Kerala HQ was supposed to open here.

Meanwhile today's Mathrubhumi has this report. KFC's first outlet is opening at Gold Souk

I meant including the Wipro campus which is complete. But one usually does not
count such exclusive campus. If one includes projects under construction then -
without exclusive campuses like TCS, Wipro - Infopark will have 3.3 million sq ft.

Tapasya - 1.25 lakh sq ft
Vismaya - 2.5 lakh sq ft
Leela I - 1.25 lakh sq ft
Leela II - 3.5 lakh sq ft
Tejomaya - 4.0 lakh sq ft

Total area - 12.5 lakh sq ft

The already completed campus of Wipro has 1.1 million sq ft. If you include this
there is already 2.4 million sq ft.

Those under construction :

Signature - 10.0 lakh sq ft
Tower (u/c)
Atulya (u/c) - 5.5 lakh sq ft
Brigade(u/c) - 5.5 lakh sq ft

Total u/c - 21 lakh sq ft

Total - 33.5 lakh sq ft (3.3 million sq ft)

German cruise line to use Kochi as home port

V. Sajeev Kumar

Kochi, Feb. 4 Kochi Port’s efforts to emerge as a most preferred cruise destination in India has received a major boost with the decision taken by AIDA Cruises, Germany, to use Kochi as a turnaround port for the operations of its cruise liner AIDA Cara.
The German cruise company had informed the port about its plans to start operations from Kochi in October and this would involve turnaround of over 2,000 passengers and around 1,000 crew members, senior port officials said.
The company, according to officials, is also considering bringing in two more liners at Kochi for passenger turnaround – AIDA Bella (October 2009 and April 2010) and AIDA Aura (October 2010 and April 2011). It has been informed by the agents of the Line that based on the success of handling AIDA Cara, the port would be regularly used as a port of turnaround of this line. Earlier, this was being done at Colombo.
“This is a positive development and epitomises the faith that has been built among the cruise lines in the excellent cruise-friendly services being offered by the port,” the officials added.

Boost for tourism
Having received home port status, the port officials pointed out that Kerala’s tourism industry would get a quantum boost.
According to officials, the port had received 41 cruise vessels during 2007-08, the highest-ever in India so far. In the current financial year, a total of 38 cruise vessels are scheduled to call at Kochi, of which 24 have visited as on January 15. Besides, 19 cruise lines have confirmed their visits for 2009-10 and nine cruise lines for 2010-2011. More cruise liners would be included in this schedule in the months to come, the officials said.
Recognising the potential for tourism in Kerala, the port has taken a series of proactive initiatives to develop cruise shipping and these included concession in vessel related charges, walk in berthing priority, single window clearance for Customs, immigration etc. These measures have facilitated innovative cruise tourism products such as cruise-fly-cruise and fly-cruise-fly through Kochi.
On a cruise-fly-cruise scheme, the tourists on board tourist ships disembark at Kochi and take flight up to upcountry destinations and return and cruise further to next port. On a fly-cruise-fly product, tourists fly in from abroad and embark on cruise vessels at Kochi and cruise around and return to Kochi and their flight back home. These schemes have the potential to become more popular because the tourists need to spend minimal time for completion of various formalities

Hi..

Mall mania will start in Kochi in few months. In few months it is going to change facet of Kochi. People who say that Kochi doesn't have metro touch or look will have to change their views now, and accept the latest fact.

Now Kochi will be home to Mega malls. Mall in Kochi - Oberon is already bigger than Chennai's Spencer Plaza. Gold Souk is set to be even bigger than Oberon. It will really be a large format mall. Gold souk is set to inaugurate on 27-April-2009 on the auspisciuos day of Akshaya Trithiya.

KOCHI: The Regional Sports Centre (RSC) functioning at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium at Kadavanthra has drawn up a Rs 25 cr project to supplement the existing indoor facility with a world class multipurpose mini stadium.

The project is awaiting a nod from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) after the State Gover nment cleared the proposal as part of infrastructure development for the 34th National Games slated to be held in the state in 2010, said RSC secretary Sunil Mathai.

The existing swimming pool with a size of 25 x 20 metres, which does not measure up to Olympic standards, will be pulled down to accommodate the new structure which will come up on 90 cents of land between the main stadium and football ground.

The highlight of the project is the tiered structure proposed for various arenas.

With a combined area of 1,06,275 sq ft, the project envisages seven floors, including the basement allotted for parking which can accommodate 100 cars.

An Olympic-sized swimming pool of 50 x 25 metres will be crafted on the ground floor. The first floor will have a terrace where a skating rink will be set up. It can also be converted into a 3000- seater auditorium with a dining area.

To provide accommodation for players and officials, 17 air-conditioned rooms will come up on the second and third floors.

The fourth floor will be furnished to include eight tables for table tennis. A squash court will be marked on the floor with provisions for quick conversion.

Finally, just below the dome of the stadium, the fifth floor will house convertible basketball, volleyball and shuttle badminton courts with galleries on the sides and markings for all three games.

The RSC is hoping that the project can be completed within 16 months once the IOA gives the green signal.

Focus Kochi - Big Infrastructure investments proposed

Contributing more than 65% of state's tax revenue, Kochi infrastructure is getting
attention finally - although funds have still to come.

Inkel plans to improve Kochi transport system

Proposals submitted to State Govt.

Sankar Radhakrishnan

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb. 10 Infrastructures Kerala Ltd (Inkel) has drawn up several proposals to improve Kochi’s public transport system.

Of these, three proposals in particular are expected to overhaul the city’s public transport system and thereby reduce traffic congestion. The proposals include creation of a modern water transport system using the city’s network of canals, a scheme to introduce modern buses and a proposal to build an elevated highway. The investment required for these projects is estimated to be over Rs 1,400 crore.

PPP route

Confirming that the company has submitted these proposals to the State Government, an Inkel official said they are all envisaged as public-private partnership (PPP) projects. This is in keeping with the company’s mandate to develop infrastructure in Kerala through the PPP route.

Inkel itself is a public-private venture, with the State Government holding a 26 per cent stake in the company and the remaining 74 per cent being held by private investors and financial institutions.

One of Inkel’s proposals is to improve the public road transport facilities in Kochi through the urban transport system scheme under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. This scheme, which is open till mid-June this year, enables a PPP venture to acquire and operate a fleet of modern, air-conditioned buses in an urban area.

The Union Government will finance 50 per cent of the cost of purchasing the buses, with the private investor chipping in with rest, the official pointed out.

Inkel’s proposal is to introduce a fleet of 200 new buses in Kochi. The buses, operated by the private investor, will run on all important routes and help reduce the traffic on Kochi’s roads, he said.

Similarly, Inkel is keen to use the city’s canal network to create a water transport system to move both passengers and cargo quickly. The Rs 300-crore venture could also link Kochi with Alappuzha and Kottayam districts, especially with the inland container depot that is coming up in Kottayam.

The water transport system can also be used to transport passengers to and from the Kochi international airport, the company suggests in its proposal.

Another Kochi-centric proposal prepared by Inkel is to build an elevated highway — from Aroor to Edapally — above the existing Kochi bypass. The proposed elevated highway will cover a 17 km stretch and is expected to cost around Rs 960 crore to build.

It has also drawn up proposals to complete the sea port-airport road in Kochi and to create facilities for seaplanes and helicopters to operate in the city and also in other parts of the State.

CHENNAI: Trains travelling at 300 km an hour could become a reality in India, according to Union Minister of State for Railways R Velu. On his recent visit to China, the minister held talks with Chinese authorities on the transfer of technology for highspeed trains.

“The Chinese have shown a great interest in the technology transfer,” he told the media here on Monday. He added that the Chinese were known for executing projects within a given time frame.

“The railway has identified five routes for high speed trains -- Pune-Mumbai-Ahmedabad; Delhi-Amritsar-Chandigarh; Secunderabad-Vijayawada- Chennai; Chennai-Bangalore- Coimbatore-Kochi and a small stretch in Kolkata,” he added.

“For this, a feasibility study has to be conducted on traffic potential, commercial viability, and the like”, he said.

He also spoke on the need for a world class railway station, which houses facilities and security measures similar to the ones available at airports.

Aircraft carrier works start at Cochin shipyard

First indigenous aircraft carrier to be built soon
13 Feb 2009, 0415 hrs IST, TNN

PANAJI: The keel for India's first indigenous aircraft carrier also known as the air defence ship (ADS) will be laid shortly at Cochin shipyard, said admiral Sureesh Mehta, chief of naval staff.

Speaking at a ceremony in Goa on Thursday, where the Indian Navy took into possession Mhadei', a sail-powered yacht that will be used for solo circumnavigation, Mehta said that the ADS should accommodate 20-odd aircraft.

The original plan for the carrier, is to have the light combat aircraft (LCA) and the advanced light helicopter (ALH) Dhruv in its fleet of assorted aircraft besides MiG 29 K and Ka-31. The ADS will be launched by October 2010, as per the phase I contract signed by its manufacturer Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) with the defence ministry.

While the vessel is scheduled to be launched by 2010, design work on the project is in progress and the fabrication of hull blocks has already started, reports stated.

Hi

You guys have any update on pvt IT SEZ's in Kochi?

There was some technical issue, correct ? From December 2008, Central govt
has made possession certificate mandatory for SEZ status. For this reason
none of the SEZs got approval in last meeting. I dont know when the next meeting is.
But the companies will have to get the possession certificate and reapply.

But now, in view of recession, central govt is giving more financial and administrative
sops to SEZs. So most probably they will get sanction next meeting.

By the way, those private IT SEZs coming on Kinfra leased out land will have no
problem in getting possession certificate - they are TCG Biotech and Sutherland.
Also Parsvnath, Emaar is also said to be possess certificates already.

The last two had applied for Enviromental clearance - they both received it recently.

One more thing. CIAL has also applied for Aviation SEZ. Thankfully this does not have
to go thru kadal kizhavan Chief minister, but only thru Industries minister. So this may also
get sanction next meeting.

Urban mission approves eight road projects in city

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Eight road projects and three rail overbridges will receive financial support from the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

Sanctioned

The projects screening committee of the mission approved these 11 projects and sanctioned Rs.138 crore for the city, said Mayor Mercy Williams.

Once these projects are implemented, the pressure on the city roads will be reduced considerably. The traffic along the South and North overbridges would be reduced to half, said Mini Antony, Secretary of the Kochi Corporation.

It is the Thammanam–Pulleppady Road, Gosree-Mamangalam Road, Stadium Link Road, western extension of the Sahodaran Ayyappan Road, Sahodaran Ayyappan road and junctions, Chilavannur Bund Road, Edappally–High Court Road and its junctions and Kalamassery Municipal Road that have got support from the mission.

The rail overbridges of Ponnurunni, Atlantis and Pachalam will also be constructed with the aid of the mission.

While the corporation will tender the road works, the Roads and Bridges Development Corporation (RBDC) will implement the rail overbridges.

The work can be started without delay as the RBDC authorities have claimed that they had the required technical clearance from the agencies concerned, Ms. Antony said.

Thanks Santhosh. Good find.

That is a new SEZ at Kalamassery by Carborundum Univ Ltd. That takes the total
number of SEZs approved by state govt to 11. Two more are in wait HDIL cybercity
and CIAL aviation SEZ. That is a total of 13 SEZs coming up in private sector
11 in Kochi, one each in Trissur (Putukkad) and Kottayam (Piravom).

That MM Tech towers is appearing for notification is significant - it may have got land
possession certificate already. Only Parsvnath, Emaar, TCG Biotech, Sutherland and
Unitech was hopeful of getting this. This one looks a good progress.

There are two more which may need land possession certificate - Cochin Technoparks
and ETL Infra. The last one will be the biggest IT SEZ in the state on over 500 acres
with an investment of Rs.10000 crore. But due to recession, probably ETL will move
slowly even after getting land possession certificate. Because after getting SEZ
notification there is rule that says tha a minimum built up space must be ready within
24 or 36 months.

Lets wait and see

KOCHI: The National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (NATPAC) will prepare a detailed project report for introducing low-floor bus service in Kochi.

This was decided at a meeting of the Kochi Corporation council convened here on Monday.

The project will utilise the funds to be released by the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) for Kochi under the urban road transport component. The Kochi Corporation will join the special purpose vehicle to be formed for the management of the bus transport system.

The Local Administration Department, Kerala Urban and Rural Development Fund Corporation and the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will be the other stakeholders of the special purpose vehicle.

Even while initiating steps to get the bus transport project going, the council has decided to urge the Mission authorities to support it in setting up an inland water transport network too.

Explaining the details of the project, Kochi Mayor Mercy Williams said the support was offered to Kochi as an additional Central assistance. The project had been suggested for Kochi considering the 10-lakh plus population of what is called the Kochi Urban Agglomerate.

It has been suggested to purchase 110 low-floor buses under the scheme and run a mass rapid transport system in the city. Though it was earlier suggested that WAPCOS, an empanelled consultant, should prepare the detailed project report, Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty suggested that the works be assigned to the NATPAC considering its expertise in the field.

The NATPAC had earlier conducted transport-related studies for Kochi and the data generated during these studies could be used for the preparation of the report, Ms. Williams said.

Bus terminals have to be set up at Vyttila, Kakkanad, Thripunithura, Vypeen, Fort Kochi and Aroor.

Boats to ease traffic congestion mooted

Proposals have come from Infrastructures Kerala Limited

http://www.hindu.com/2009/02/16/images/2009021659660301.jpg
KOCHI: The Infrastructures Kerala Limited (Inkel) has come up with a number of suggestions to help Kochi city tide over increasing traffic congestion.

This would be carried out by introducing luxury buses in select corridors and by networking the city’s underutilised waterways for water-transport. Yet another proposal is to build an elevated highway over the existing Edapally-Aroor stretch of NH 47. Inkel (which is a public-private venture, with the State Government holding 26 per cent stake and the rest of the shares owned by banks, NRIs and other individuals) has also expressed its willingness to carry out the long-pending extension of the Airport-Seaport Road from Kalamassery to the Cochin International Airport.

An official of the firm said that a proposal has been submitted to the Transport and Finance Ministries, to carry out the projects on a public-private partnership. “Whether it would be on a BOT basis or through another mode, is yet to be finalised. An ideal way would be for the Corporation of Kochi to select a partner to execute the projects by constituting a special-purpose vehicle. The Corporation could avail funds from the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).”

A Government Order dated January 12 speaks of the need to boost the urban public transport system in seven Category-A and 63 Category-B cities in the country. Kochi is among the Category-B cities, where 200 air-conditioned, low-floor buses have been recommended as a means to improve public transport. “The buses could be put in service from the suburbs to the city every few minutes, to reduce the number of cars and bikes on congested roads. A similar move has been successful in Indore, Madhya Pradesh,” the official said. As of now, people are forced to venture out in their private vehicles because of the crowded and unfriendly public-transport system comprising private and KSRTC buses.

Under a Rs. 300-crore proposal to boost the efficiency of the city’s water-transport system, Inkel proposes the introduction of boats with comfortable seating and enhanced safety standards. They could inter-connect islands and other places in the city, thus enabling commuters to reach their destination faster, at an economical rate and without causing pollution. It suggests that a few boats could be put in operation from Kochi to Alappuzha and to Kottayam. The funds would also be used to dredge canals and to build terminals and boat jetties. This would also help tourism.

A Rs. 960-crore Edapally-Aroor elevated highway has been suggested since the route is getting more congested by the day. Officials in the National Highways Authority of India said that the stretch carries as many number of vehicles to make it a six-lane highway.

Ambalappuzha IT park

http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/News/Economy/Keralas_new_IT_park_styled_as_water_park/articleshow/4141628.cms

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala government has decided to put to full effect the state’s striking natural beauty while establishing its newest IT park at Ambalappuzha in Alappuzha district, designing the park to resemble what could be termed the first water theme park of the ITindustry.

The IT park at Ambalappuzha is part of the state government’s decision to have the IT infrastructure in the state more broad based by having IT parks in all districts as against the present concentration of the tech industry in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi.

The Ambalappuzha IT park, for which chief minister V S Achuthanandan laid the foundation stone this week, will function as a hub of the Kochi-based Infopark. The park has a 100-acre campus, of which a third has been granted special economic zone status, officials said.

Kerala IT secretary Ajay Kumar said the Ambalappuzha Infopark, and the Kollam Technopark which was initiated last week, signaled the beginning of the fruition of the state government’s long-standing dream of setting up IT parks all over the state.

He said work on the Ambalappuzha park would commence by April, starting with the establishment of facilities like windmills, reverse osmosis for treatment of brackish water and other facilities like educational/training institutions, marina, entertainment and retail IT services, health centers and residential apartments.

Infopark CEO Siddhartha Bhattacharya said the Ambalappuzha park, with its unique location at the popular backwater region of Alappuzha, would enable combined promotion of the IT and tourism sectors in the state, and could transform the location into an IT Venice of the East.

He said islands would be formed with interconnected roads and bridges, retaining the natural features, thereby creating an ambience conducive for a stress-free environment for professionals to work in.

I guess that's no news now because everyone knows KFC is opening at Souk, Vyttila.

KFC, McDonalds and a host of other food joints has signed up with Lulu as it is the
biggest one coming up in South. That may be why they bowed out of a smaller mall like Oberon.
So Edappally will not loose KFC after all.

Emirates betting high on Kerala in times of slowdown
18 Feb 2009, 1858 hrs IST, ET Bureau

KOCHI: Emirates is betting on its operations to Kerala despite an economic slowdown. The airline major, which runs 28 flights a week to Kerala,
says it is maintaining a healthy load factor in its flights to the state unaffected by recession.

Emirates vice president for India and Nepal, Mr Orhan Abbas while admitting that its global operations have been hit by slowdown like all the major airlines, said its services to Kerala have been running with nearly 80 % load.

``We have increased our frequency to two flights a day to Kochi, our biggest market in Kerala. This means 14 flights a week, which is 100% increase from middle of last year. While several airlines are downsizing we are increasing capacity,’’ he said. Emirates accounts for 18 % of the traffic by international carriers to Kochi.

Mr Abbas ruled out the possibility that the increase in traffic was not due to exodus from the Gulf to Kerala as the surge in traffic has been consistent over past months and the traffic out of the state is also on the rise.

Emirates now has 163 flights to ten destinations to India. According to Mr Abbas, India is less affected by the global turmoil than other countries and he expects the traffic movement particularly from Kerala to increase in futures.

Apart from passenger traffic, there is also an increased demand for cargo from the state, he said. Emirates has capacity to carry 450 tonnes a week from Kerala with Kochi alone accounting for 220 tonnes. With the recent opening of perishable cargo centre in Kochi, a further rise in cargo traffic, particularly in seafood, is expected.

KOCHI: Contradicting Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan's statement in the assembly, SmartCity Dubai has clarified that its project in Kochi is

very much on its agenda and would be taken up as soon as the state government completes the procedural formalities relating to it.

The chief minister had stated that the work on the Rs 1500 crore SmartCity project has not started as the global financial meltdown has affected the Dubai-based company. In a teletalk with ET, Mr Fareed Abdulrahman, CEO of SmartCity and director of the Kochi project said that he does not know "on what basis the Chief Minister made the statement". He said that "the financial meltdown has not affected the project".

"We are very much into the project", he said adding that the groundwork and design of project are progressing well. When asked about the chief minister’s statement that the lease agreement has lapsed he said that he does not know under what circumstances the statement was made.

He said that the delay in both registration and obtaining the SEZ notification is not helping the project. "We hope the government will solve the procedural delays with regard to the project", he added.

The next Board Meeting of the project has been fixed on March 16. Mr Fareed Abdulrahman listed the possession of the land, its registration and the speedy clearance of SEZ notification as the three important formalities to be completed for the work to start.

CDIA support comes as 100 per cent grant

Chennai and Kochi among Indian cities selected

Rs. 2.5 crore for preparing project reports

KOCHI: The Cities Development Initiatives for Asia (CDIA) has offered a grant of Rs. 450 crore for the city transport infrastructure development.

The financial aid would be used for various transport infrastructure projects, said Mini Antony, secretary of the Kochi Corporation, who attended a regional workshop at Bangkok this week. CIDA was established to assist Asian cities to bridge the infrastructure investment gap. Representatives from China, Indonesia, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Vietnam, Laos, Fiji, Kyrgyzsian, Thailand and Cambodia participated in the event. Eight Indian cities participated in the workshop.

The major attraction of the project is that its financial support comes as 100 per grant. The fund could be used for meeting the Urban Local Body share of various projects.

It can also be used for the construction of flyovers, Rail Over Bridges and such projects, Ms. Antony said.

Among the Indian cities, Chennai and Kochi were selected for the first phase of aid. Kochi presented projects to support the infrastructure development and capacity building of the city’s transportation initiatives, she said.

In the first phase Rs. 2.5 crore will be released and this would be used for the preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPR).

The agency will assist the city in preparing the DPR and the city will get the support of the consultants empanelled by it.

The projects will have to be of international standards, she said.

The CIDA will soon issue an allotment letter regarding the support it has offered to Kochi.

The city will have to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the CIDA and its experts will visit Kochi shortly. K.G. Sahuji, Project Manager of the project implementation unit of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission was also part of the Kochi delegation.

A delegation of the agency will also closely monitor the utilisation of funds and implementation of projects, she said.

He also said that in the park, there could be small to medium-scale units and large units, repairing and overhauling large aircraft, engines as well as their equipments for both military and civilian purposes.

He also mentioned about the market for units in the park to manufacture and assemble required for airport maintenance, security and safety equipments and recommended the entrepreneurs to tie up with major aerospace players to make the maximum of this opportunity.

Earlier in his address, Dr. C.G. Krishnadas Nair, MD, CIAL, spoke of the plans to set up a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for a dedicated aerospace industrial park as part of the effective land utilisation strategy by the airport company. An application filed by CIAL for setting up an IT park in the same property had been rejected earlier by the State IT department.

Kochi airport presents ‘Aerotropolis’ roadmap

A Correspondent

Proposed ‘Aerotropolis’ to come up in 450 acres of land under the CIAL

CIAL offers investment opportunities in aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul

Nedumbassery: The business model presented by the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) on “an airport-based industrial park” on the final day of the national workshop on “industrial opportunities in aerospace and defence sectors” here on Friday, offers investment opportunities in the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) sector for the engine and components of aircraft that forms about 50 per cent of the global MRO market.

In the presentation, the company described the industrial park with a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) status as a vital arm of its proposed ‘Aerotropolis’ in the 450 acres of land under its ownership. Its case for a dedicated industrial park to cater to the needs of the aviation industry was also supported by stating all the possible advantages for the potential investors here.

The company spoke of its plans to establish an MRO facility that would cater to narrow body aircraft in the first phase and subsequently to wide body aircraft through one of its subsidiaries named CIASL (Cochin International Aviation Services Limited). It also said there were tremendous opportunities for entrepreneurs to establish facilities in the field of engine and component MROs and that many leading original equipment makers were keen on associating themselves with Indian companies in this area.

The proposal for setting up a helicopter MRO facility holds significance in the backdrop of the CIAL’s efforts to attract chopper operators to Kerala by setting up helipads in districts. The model also stipulates investment in facilities for aircraft wheels and brakes repairing, fabrication work stands and docking systems, storage and distribution of previously certified aircraft goods and materials, refurbishment of interiors, galley equipment, MRO of cargo equipment and manufacture and maintenance of ground handling and other airport equipment.

The company offered to provide the investors plots of developed land with SEZ status (application for which is pending with the government) and infrastructure including electricity, water, effluent treatment facilities and communication network. The presentation also pointed out factors like the park’s proximity to the international airport along with an MRO unit and the Vallarpadam Container Transhipment Terminal and the availability of highly trained and tech-savvy workforce.

On the land, it envisages a lease period of 30 years that can be further extended.

Rs.375 crore cruise terminal takes off.

Kochi to become world class cruise destination

Staff Reporter
Success of Ocean Race prompts Centre to provide Rs. 15 crore to improve tourism facilities

KOCHI: The Kochi port’s ambitions of becoming a world class cruise destination has received a boost with Kochi being rated high among the recreational port destinations in the world.

According to Cochin Port Trust sources, Kochi ranks top among the 11 ports across the world that hosted and will host Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09.

Kochi hosted the Volvo Ocean Race for two weeks from December 3 and the stopover was described as a grand success both by the race teams and by the Volvo Ocean Race management.

The success of the event prompted the Union government to provide a grant of Rs. 15 crore directly to the port trust to improve tourism facilities on the premises, said an official of the port trust.

The money is going to improving existing facilities and building new ones for the purpose making Kochi more prepared for its future role as a major cruise destination.

The grant was a pleasant surprise given that several agencies, including the State government have been submitting proposals for building new and improving the existing tourism facilities.

The Union government grant came in even as the port trust authorities have firmed up the documents on public-private partnership for the nearly Rs. 400-crore International Cruise Terminal.

According to port trust sources, the documents will soon be sent to the Public-Private Partnership Appraisal Committee for its approval.

The Cochin Port Trust has appointed a professional consultant for guiding it on evaluating, selecting and awarding of the work for the cruise terminal.

The agency will assist the port trust throughout the remaining course of awarding the work for the project, envisaged as a public-private partnership.

The port’s plan is to build a cruise terminal on 6.71 hectares of land earmarked for the purpose on the North End of Willingdon Island. There will be a modern berth of 220 metres length, a world class cruise terminal building, a shopping mall and office tower, a five-star hotel complex as well as a Kerala Village.

The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 375 crore and the annual passenger handling capacity is 3.5 lakh.

The feasibility report and business plan for the project was completed in March last year.

The transaction advisor for helping the port in calling for tenders and evaluation was appointed in June. The port authorities are hopeful that the facility can be commissioned in the second half of 2011.

Meanwhile, the number of cruise vessels calling at the Kochi port stands at 37 so far during the current financial year. Twelve vessels care expected to call at the port in the coming weeks and this include Queen Mary II and Queen Victoria, port trust sources said.

KOCHI: The all-India call centre of Geojit Financial Services, leading retail financial services company, has started operations here.

The company’s customer care cell, which had been providing client support to the company’s retail clients and B2B banking partners, has grown into this dedicated 100-seat facility.

C.J. George, Geojit Managing Director, said, “We believe in providing our esteemed clients with a single point of contact that will gradually grow to respond to all their financial services requirements.

Quality monitoring and continuous training programmes for the executives to stay updated help ensure that client interaction is smooth.”

The trained customer support executives, or agents as they are known, interact with clients either on the phone or via e-mail. The support services provided include welcoming new clients, providing clients with account related details, responding to general queries and calls to trade, providing technical support to all online and offline trading clients, and information on new products and services.

The call centre will be multi-lingual with client support in English, Hindi, Malayalam and Tamil initially; additional languages are expected to be added over time.

Strict quality criteria in place in the previous customer care facility, such as less than three per cent non-attended calls, monitoring of each agent by quality executives, morning briefings, daily training and so on, will continue to be adhered to.

Prior to the launch of the call centre facility, nearly 30,000 calls (incoming and outgoing) and 5,000 mails were managed monthly.

With the new call centre and inclusion of value-added services, the 50,000 calls threshold will be crossed in 2009.

Clients can avail themselves of facilities such as call and trade, information on buying power, account balance and any account specific information, general information on the market, online fund transfer through participating banks, applying for IPOs online and so on.

An IVR system routes the call according to the client’s selection of executive.

Clients also have 24/7 access to a customer care web site.

The centre’s executives can be contacted on the toll free number 1800-425-5501 or on 0484-2405822 from 9.30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, a press release said.

DMRC to set up office in city for metro project

Staff Reporter

Project cost revised from Rs. 2,200 crore to Rs. 3,300 crore

http://www.hindu.com/2009/03/06/images/2009030659780301.jpg

KOCHI: The groundwork for initiating civil jobs associated with the Kochi metro-rail project would get a boost with the office of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) set to begin functioning at the GCDA building located on the eastern entry to the Ernakulam Junction railway station.

Over a month ago, the State Government handed over Rs. 50 lakh to the Corporation for setting up an office that would oversee the technical aspects of the mega project. The metro Corporation appointed K. Gopinathan as liaison officer to interact with the State and Central Governments and the other agencies concerned. The office would be headed by a chief engineer, who would be assisted by a team of engineers from the DMRC - the project consultants.

A senior official of the Corporation said that the total project cost of the system of mass-rapid transport has been revised from Rs. 2,200 crores to Rs. 3,300 crores. “Each train would have four coaches and the coaches will be berthed in a depot near Aluva.” He termed as propaganda rumours doing the rounds that the pillars for the rails would be very wide and would thus throw vehicular movement out of gear. “Each pillar will be 80 cms wide, needing a little more width than that of the existing medians.”

A team of officials led by T. K. Baby, Special Tahsildar (NH land acquisition) is already carrying out the survey and valuation of land that would have to be acquired for the project.

The work would get over in another three months. Preliminary estimates put the area of land that would be acquired at 40 acres of private land and 25 acres of Government land.

The State Government is yet to respond to a proposal to post a special tahsildar exclusively for the metro-rail and a team of officials, for hastening the land-acquisition work.

The project got delayed after the Planning Commission suggested a BOT model for the venture, with private participation, instead of the Centre-State joint-venture project as suggested by the State and the Union Urban Development Ministry. The matter is now pending before the Prime Minister.

“We are optimistic that the Prime Minister will throw his weight behind the joint-venture project, which is similar to the model in which the Delhi metro-rail is being executed,” the Minister for Law and Railways, M Vijayakumar told The Hindu.

Tuesday, Mar 10, 2009
Mott MacDonald, the leading global engineering, management and development consultancy, has seen dramatic growth over recent years and now has more than 1,500 employees in India. This success has influenced the decision to open a new office in Kochi, the commercial capital of Kerala, the southern state that will become a central hub for the firm’s oil, gas and petrochemical (OGP) storage and distribution business serving projects both in India and worldwide.

This new design centre in Kochi is key to Mott MacDonald’s oil and gas business strategy and will compliment and support the firm’s OGP design centres in Kolkata and Mumbai.

Kochi’s pool of home-grown and Kerala’s internationally located, but keen to return to their home state, talented experts in oil, gas & petrochemical engineering is a major attraction for Mott MacDonald which has already been tapping into the local expertise as its portfolio develops. This portfolio includes providing consultancy services for Shell India Marketing Pvt Ltd on a new multi product storage terminal project at Devanagonthi, Bangalore, India.

A new major project for Mott MacDonald is for Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) to provide full consultancy services for a development of petroleum, oil and lubricant (POL) terminals at a new green-field marketing installation at Visakhapatnam in India on the coastal belt of the Bay of Bengal. Mott MacDonald’s oil, gas and petrochemical professionals will provide consultancy services throughout the project from the conceptual stage through to handing over the entire facility to HPCL. This will include design, engineering, procurement, project and construction management services and is due to be completed by the end of 2010.

KOCHI: Despite the Tourism industry in the state facing crisis due to the economic meltdown, it will a smooth sailing for the Cochin Port Trust.

By the end of this financial year, the Port will attain the status of busiest cruise destination in the country.

The Port would have hosted 36 cruise vessels of leading companies worldwide by the end of this month. This will mark the arrival of around 12,000 passengers and 6,000 crew members during the month of March.

Together with this, by the end of March, the Port would have hosted about 22,000 tourists and around 10,000 crew members. This is a significant number, considering the overall drop in the number of international tourists due to the present global recession.

March is going to be the busiest month with 11 cruise ships calling at the Port. This include, large luxury vessels such as Queen Mary-2 and her sister vessel Queen Victoria and mv Oriana.

On some days, there were two cruise vessels berthed at the Port. Cochin Port Trust chairman N Ramachandran recently said that some of the major cruising companies had expressed their interest to use the Cochin Port as their hub ports. “The increase in the number of vessels shows the high degree of confidence and satisfaction that prestigious cruise lines have with the cruise and tourist- friendly services that are being provided by the Cochin Port,” said the Port authorities.

Compared to the Mumbai and Goa ports, the Cochin Port has been in the forefront for the past two years in receiving maximum number of foreign cruise vessels. Besides the regular cruise ships that have been making repeated visits to Kochi, this year the mv Azamara Quest made a maiden call at the Port in December last indicating the interest that the Port has evinced among the new cruise ship companies.

The cruise ships visiting the Port this month also includes the Silver Wind, Balmoral, Amadea, Rotterdam, Seven Seas Voyager, Arcadia, Saga Rose and the Star Clipper.

Kochi found ideal site for Maritime varsity campus

KOCHI: With the Union Government setting up the Indian Maritime University(IMU) in Chennai, the state is keeping its hopes alive for a full-fledged campus of the university in Kochi.

The IMU which was inaugurated in last December already has three campuses- Mumbai, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam.

Experts in the shipping and marine sector are of the opinion that Kerala deserves a campus of the university.

The IMU would promote maritime studies, research and extension work with focus on emerging areas, including marine science and technology, and marine environment.

“Being a hub of maritime activities, Kochi is the ideal location for the IMU campus. Besides, a large number of people from the state are working in maritime sector in different posts,” said Jose Paul, former chairman of the Goa Port Trust, who has been appointed as a member of the executive committee of IMU by the President of India.

The first Indian to have secured a doctorate in Port Management from the University of Wales, Cardiff, UK, and a fellow of the British Institute of Management and Chartered Institute of Transport, London, Jose Paul is the recipient of Akiyama International Award instituted by the International Association of Ports and Harbours, Japan.

He is presently serving as professor in maritime transport management in the Manipal University and advisor of major shipping companies in Mumbai and Kochi. P M Abraham, who was the additional secretary (Ports) and secretary (Shipping), is another person from the state who was appointed the member of the committee.

The appointment of these expert hands into the 15-member committee gains significance in view of the demand by the state government to have an IMU campus in Kochi. Jose Paul is of the opinion that the Cochin Port can facilitate the IMU campus in Kochi.

“The Port Trust owns adequate land in Willingdon Island. I hope that getting a campus would not be difficult if we can provide around 10 acres here,” said Jose Paul who has also served as the acting chairman of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, Mumbai.

At present 27,000 officers and 55,000 workers are employed on Indian and foreign flag vessels.

It is estimated that there would be a shortage of 27,000 officers by 2015 at global-level.

MarineDrive Trade center to be opened in December

International Trade Centre for Kochi

Staff Reporter

The trade centre would be a major landmark on the industrial map of Kerala.

KOCHI: The Kerala Chamber of Commerce and Industry is in talks with the State government to ensure that the International Trade Centre, scheduled to be inaugurated in December this year, has offices of the departments concerned for making single-window clearances for industries and service enterprises a reality.

The International Trade Centre is among the ambitious schemes envisaged by the chamber for promoting Kerala as a major industrial investment destination in the world.
Representative offices

Chamber officials are also in talks with Governments in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to open representative offices at the trade centre to facilitate better trade and business exchanges, said K.N. Marzook of the chamber.

He said that about 80 per cent of the work on the International Trade Centre was complete and that it was scheduled to be inaugurated in December.

The trade centre would be a major landmark on the industrial map of Kerala, he said.

The centre has been planned as a one-stop shop for trade and industry in Kerala.

The centre is being planned on a 1.5-lakh sqft area, complete with an international convention centre that can seat 2,000 people.

The project, estimated to cost Rs. 100 crore, is being built by the chamber in partnership with private investors.
Work progressing

The work on the project is expected to be completed in three months, said Mr. Marzook.

He said space in the centre will be sold only after the complete work is over and with the special intentions of the trade centre in mind.

Besides showcasing the industrial and services potential of Kerala, there will be a special centre for catering to the needs of women entrepreneurs, who, the chamber feels, have been neglected and that they should be given a fair deal once the trade centre is ready.
Varied facilities

The Kerala Chamber has taken a cue from the World Trade Centre in providing the various facilities here.

An industrial resource centre, trade and information cells, shopping arcade, a permanent and several temporary exhibition pavilions, state-of-the-art telecom facilities, a business centre and a testing laboratory will be among the several features of the centre.

The planners of the project have provided for ample parking facilities on the ground and second floors. The Hindu news (http://www.hindu.com/2009/03/21/stories/2009032158720200.htm)

Kochi's gets whopping infra investment

Already attracting billions worth employment generating investments, infrastructure
back up is steadily getting in place

An infrastructure boom waiting to happen in Kochi

A slew of infrastructure projects are on the anvil in Kochi. K.S. SUDHI goes through a few proposals.

http://www.hindu.com/2009/03/21/images/2009032156421501.jpg
Teeming streets: Better infrastructure will mean fewer traffic jams such as this in Kochi.

Investments in infrastructure are flowing into Kochi in a never before fashion, promising to change the face of the city.

The Cities Development Initiative Asia (CDIA) is the latest to pump in money. The initiative, assisting Asian cities to bridge the infrastructure investment gap, has offered Rs.450 crore. The money will be added to the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) aid. Kochi and Chennai have been selected in the first phase from Indian cities in the race for funds.

A CDIA team, led by Nadir Ehsan, Senior Municipal Development Specialist, was in Kochi recently. The areas in which the agency’s aid will be utilised will be finalised after a pre-feasibility study. Environment, traffic, road design and urban planning experts will carry it out.

The civic authorities hope to use the aid for creating a smooth and efficient urban road transport system. They have identified “monumental flyovers” which will serve as the most functional system to solve traffic jams.

A flyover each has been planned on Salim Rajan Road and the Vyttila-Thripunithura stretch and at Kacheripadi. A final decision will be taken after the study and presentations by CDIA experts before the Kochi Corporation Council, civic authorities say.
Other projects

Among those to be taken up under various other infrastructure schemes are five roads projects, three railway overbridges at level crossings which hold up traffic and a premium bus service.

The overbridges have been proposed at Atlantis along Kizhuvana Road, Pachalam along Chittoor Road and Ponnurunni along the Vyttila-Thammanam road.

The Pachalam project will get Rs.53.55 crore, the Atlantis project, Rs.18.86 crore and the Ponnurunni one, Rs.13.06 crore.

Stadium Link Road will get JNNURM assistance of Rs.5.12 crore and the Thamannam-Pullepady road Rs.14.94 crore. The Goshree-Mamangalam road will get Rs.25.78 crore, whereas Sahodaran Ayyappan Road and its junction improvement project will get Rs.8.96 crore. The widening and upgrading of the Edapally-High Court Road segment to international standards will get Rs.16.21 crore.

The Goshree-Pachalam-Mamangalam road is a minor road for local traffic. “Presently, only local traffic movement to reach the other parts of the city is envisaged. The present road corridor has been proposed for improvement in view of the proposed container terminal and LNG Terminal in Goshree and Vallarpadam areas,” a project report says. The suggested improvements will help in decongesting Banerjee Road, say civic authorities.

Corporation authorities say the Stadium Link Road project stretch is proposed to be developed as one of the important links on the north-south corridor connecting major commercial hubs of the city with outside traffic. It can ease the traffic on Banerjee and Thammanam roads, the report says.

For the Sahodaran Ayyappan Road (West extension) project, the civic authorities propose to widen the road to 22 metres and straighten it to avoid traffic jams. It has been proposed to connect this road with Church Landing Road so that traffic can move to the centre city commercial area easily.

For the Edappally-High Court Road and junction project, the proposal is to have maximum road width. All possible traffic furniture has been suggested to increase the road utility. Streetlights and bus bays will be provided.
Bus service

The city bus service project will require around Rs.235 crore. The buses will cost Rs.85.5 crore. Another Rs.150 crore will be required for the bus terminals.

N. Ramachandran, Secretary of the Ministry for Urban Development, says, “The demand from the average passenger is in terms of quality of service, safety, reliability, efficiency and comfort. There is a mismatch between the expectations and the actual availability of public transport.”

Therefore, says Mr. Ramachandran in the concept note of the project, “it would be essential that quality buses are introduced for city transport. This would not only change the mindset of people about buses but also help in improving the image of the city.”

There will be AC, non-AC and low-floor buses, offering a choice to people to opt for the comforts offered by the public transport system. This will reduce the number of vehicles entering the city, said Deputy Mayor C.K. Manisankar at a meeting of the Kochi Corporation council which discussed the project.

A concept note circulated among the stakeholders says: “The present day city buses continued to suffer from poor brand image. They are not user-friendly and continued to be ergonomically poorly designed.” The buses are unfit for use by physically challenged persons, are fuel guzzling and low on passenger comfort and are not enabled with the Intelligent Transport System (ITS).

The new fleet in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram will satisfy the “minimum recommended specifications across the country to facilitate introduction of ITS-enabled modern city bus service.”

The ITS-enabled buses and vehicles will have engine diagnostic tools, a wide range of onboard entertainment facilities including wireless phones, radios, TVs and games. They will be fitted with GPS devices. The travel in the city buses, hopes the authorities, should become a pleasurable experience in place of the harrowing and unpleasant experience now.

The concept of the modern city bus service can be sold to the public as a branded product and people can take pride in travelling by public transport. Modern buses should be sleek and ergonomically designed, facilitate level boarding and alighting and have comfortable seating and suspension, an advanced passenger information system and vehicle information and tracking systems. They should be passenger-friendly, especially for the physically challenged, and offer electronic fare collection, among the requirements, the concept note outlines.

The Kochi Corporation hopes to collaborate with the State government and the Transport Department in the Special Purpose Vehicle to be formed for managing the bus service.

But a few issues on the management of the fleet and the economic viability of the project remain.

The daunting task before the authorities will be to overcome the intense competition from the private bus operators.

CIAL to become cargo hub

Already CIAL has clocked the highest freight traffic in the state. With more perishable
cargo coming CIAL is set to become the hub for perishable exports too.

CIAL to hold farmers’ conclave

A Correspondent

To link farming community with buyers abroad

‘Growers can engage in buy-back agreements’

Nedumbassery: The Cochin International airport Limited (CIAL) is planning to organise a ‘farmers’ conclave’ to connect the local farming community to the buyers abroad through the recently launched Centre for Perishable Cargo (CPC), according to airport officials.

They said that by bringing the farmers, the horticulture mission and the potential buyers on a single platform, the airport company expected to provide an opportunity to the growers to engage in buy-back agreements periodically with their potential buyers overseas. They also hoped to identify various areas of cooperation with the farming community to ensure fuller utilisation of the infrastructure through the initiative.

The conference would be held at the airport within a couple of months after the general elections and the airport company, through this initiative, sought to provide a permanent stream of income for their client farmers, said the officials.

The airport company had ordered fifty specially designed cargo containers for the full fledged operation of the CPC. These will reach the airport in three or four stages. However, the officials held the view that the full-fledged operations would begin once the ongoing runway re-carpeting was completed.

According to the officials, the daily average export of vegetables and flowers through the airport was around 50- 60 tonnes and this was expected to rise further during the festival seasons when the flights would carry exclusive cargos for the Gulf Countries. “Efforts are on to reach the perishable export through here at 100 tonnes a day and we hope to achieve the target within a period of six months,”, they added.

The officials also said though export of general cargo had fallen slightly following the recession, they were trying hard to maintain the level of operations by increasing the quantity of perishable cargo.

With the CPC that has a capacity to handle around 25,000 tonnes of cargo annually, the CIAL aims to increase its present volume of agro products export from 10,000 tonnes to 30,000 tonnes by the year 2015.

“The CIAL has been in touch with the cultivators even outside the State, but they cannot make an overnight shift in their agreement with the exporter and the buyer. However, with the installation of an IT-enabled customs clearance system (EDIMES) and once the proposed agreements on sales tax with the Walayar check-post come into effect, the products even from the neighbouring States would soon start moving overseas from here,” say the officials.

GAIL (India) Ltd. says total investment will be Rs.3,200 crore

KOCHI: GAIL (India) Ltd. will start work on laying a trunk pipeline for natural gas from here to Bangalore and Mangalore soon. An offshore pipeline will be laid from here to Kayamkulam to supply gas to the thermal power plant of the National Thermal Power Corporation there.

U.D. Choubey, Chairman and Managing Director of the company, said here on Tuesday that the 800-km Bangalore and Mangalore pipeline, involving an investment of Rs.2,500 crore, had been approved. The pipeline would be ready by 2011-end when the LNG (liquefied natural gas) project here would go on stream. The route had been decided and land acquisition would start with the assistance of the State government. The State had promised all help for the project. The pipeline would be laid via Kanjikode in Palakkad district, from where it would branch out to Bangalore, via Coimbatore, and to Mangalore. Companies such as FACT and BSES would be the major consumers of natural gas here.

He said the 100-km pipeline to Kayamkulam would require an investment of about Rs.700 crore.

Mr. Choubey said an ambitious project to replace petroleum fuel with natural gas would be initiated by the company. Research and development was necessary to employ appropriate technology.

He said supply of piped cooking gas to domestic consumers and compressed natural gas for running automobiles would be started here. A cluster of industries in Kanjikode would utilise natural gas. Its use reduced costs and cut pollution.

The company would transport gas from the Krishna-Godavari Basin. The new projects, along with the existing 7,000-km pipeline and 5,500 km under construction, would form part of a national gas grid.
LNG supply

He said an international competitive bidding by Petronet LNG Ltd. (PLL) had led to the selection of Ras Laffan Liquefied Natural Gas Company Ltd. (Rasgas) as the preferred LNG supplier for its 5 MMTPA (million tonnes per annum) LNG re-gasification terminal at Dahej in Gujarat and the 2.5 MMTPA LNG terminal here. Petronet has signed a sale and purchase agreement with Rasgas for 25 years.

EMP,

There is an interesting outcome for this, now that NTPC has struck a deal with Petronet for LNG. Their initial requirement is 1.5 MMTPA and 7 MMTPA after expansion !!
That means Kochi LNG terminal will have to be expanded to at least 11 MMTPA !!

Second, Rasgas Qatar is back as the suppler for Kochi terminal. Qatar LNG is richer in ethane.
This brings back the Petrochemical complex which was postponed due to plans to get
LNG from Gorgon, Australia which was rarer in ethane. Link to the News story (http://www.hindu.com/2007/06/25/stories/2007062552680100.htm)

Together these involve an investment close to Rs.20,000 crore - more than what is already happening (about Rs.15000 cr)

And of course, look forward to plenty of cheaper electricity now that LNG prices have nosedived along with crude - particularly BSES at Eloor is expanding and KRL and Petronet are setting up new power plants.

Kochi , Apr 17 Emirates Airlines commenced operation of a cargo flight from Dubai to Kochi , with the first flight landing in the city today.

" This will benefit exporters and importers and plans are on to transport about 100 tonnes of cargo on a regular basis," Airport Director A C K Nair said.
The cargo flight arrived here at 0950 hrs from Dubai and left for Hong Kong at 1500 hrs.
Nair said Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) is making inroads in assistance for developing perishable and industrial cargo export. The airport, located at the centre of Kerala and very near to industrial centres in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, hopes to attract both types of cargo in substantial quantity for export, he said.
Major and minor importers would get an opportunity to import big size consignment to Kochi instead of Chennai and Bangalore, which would substantially reduce overhead expenses of importers and exporters, Nair said.
CIAL, as part of developing the airport into an international cargo hub with multi-model transshipment facility, would extend incentives to freighter carriers, he said.

NeST has put up a huge billboard last week near civil station, Kakkanad announcing the
project. I also saw the land preparation works at Kinfra Hitech campus on last Thursday.
