View Full Version : Me + Bored + 5 Mile Walk in Chicago + New Construction

So I had the day off, and since I've been homebound after oral surgery the past few days, was very much ready to get out of the house. I tried to take a lot of the South Loop and then up through Grant Park. I was interested in seeing some of the new construction, but also put in a lot of my old favorites.

Hope you enjoy.....

South Loop from the Roosevelt El stop, then walking through Central Station. I'd never been in this area before, and was very surprised at the level of new development. The new highrises are one thing, but the low rises and smaller condos were everywhere as well.

Thanks for the tour. A couple of years ago, I was in Chicago and had an overwhelming feeling of patriotism. It occurred to me that this is a city so good that there's no question it's worth dying for. You don't have to speculate or go through the motions. You know.

^ yeah, I really love that thing. The placement of it is perfect right at the end of Congress Parkway on the lakefront.

It reminds me of the poster for the 1939 Worlds Fair, which is my favorite.

Wow, that's a pretty good walk you had there. Perfect timing to have the day off with temperatures finally above freezing yesterday! (first time since I moved here)

I would totally consider living in the south loop if it wasn't so far from work for me, though I really do like where I'm living now (Lincoln Square). I really like the type of highrises and condos being built in the south loop (as well as the newer 3 & 4 level infill up here in the north). Chicago rocks!

Great tour with lots of construction updates.

Quite a hike, and some great photos! The transformation around the south end of the loop is pretty remarkable.

I'll second what soleri said. Every time I go there I find the place exhilarating. There's such a concentration of energy evident in the built environment and the activity that it gives me a rush.

The 12th/Roosevelt Metra Station, although interesting from a nostalgia point of view, is really a disgrace, especially because it serves the beautiful Museum Campus. It's probably structurally safe enough, but it's rickety-looking and run-down and somewhat forbidding to visitors. I think I've heard something about plans to replace it.

I have been biting my tongue for too long. So far the Trump Tower is looking pretty shitty. Chintzy shiny opaque glass. Its tall and all, but not worthy of its location dominating so many of Chicago's greatest

I hope I am wrong. Do other people agree?

I disagree completely. I hate to pull the "Do you live in Chicago card," but do you? See it in person, and I'm sure you'd come correct.

No. Chicago Trump tower is a beautiful addition to a great skyline; It clearly has been tailor made for it's location and doesn't look forced or out of place.

Nice pics by the way!! My favorite photo threads are ones that highlight dense urban residential areas, specifically modern highrises and how they relate to other highrises and the shorter buildings that they are built next to.

You can't rag on Trump YET, seriously, don't diss the bitch until she's all put together. I think it's very impressive in person, you suddently realize how LARGE it is. The footprint is huge compared to what he renderings portray, because of the height factor.

Thanks for the comments. I wish it had been a little clearer, but I really loved exploring the South Loop. I'd never gotten around in that area before - it's REALLY coming along as a nice neighborhood. I was amazed at all the medium height buildings you don't see or hear about that have gone up in that area.

My feet felt like they were going to fall off on Tuesday though :(

I'd love to get in a West Loop photo spread sometime in the near future. I rented a car for Christmas and was driving through that area to avoid 290. I was really impressed at the level of 5-10 story developments going on for blocks and blocks in all directions - east, west, north, south. It kinda reminded me of a DC streetwall with all the midrises going on one after another. Not saying it's JUST like DC, but reminded me of those buildings, probably because they are all fairly new and decent on the eyes.

Exactly, Trump is unbelieveably contextual, yet still brings its own flair and style so that it still stands out and adds interest. Its one of those buildings, even at this relatively unimpressive stage (though it is already impressive in person), that you turn a corner and see and are just like "holy shit! That's an impressive building."

Yeah, I'm quite pleased myself about the density and increase in density Chicago has/is seeing. These pics illustrate that perfectly.
