Nice set of photos. Ft Worth is a nice surprise when you don't know what to expect, especially downtown, and museum row.

What building is this? An abandoned factory I would guess. Imagine all the condos that could fit in that thing. Great pics by the way.

These are really great! The black and white makes everything that is familiar look very different.

For those of you wondering, these two buildings and the Post Office were part of the Texas and Pacific development long Lancaster Avenue in 1931. The terminal building served as the rail passenger station for the Texas and Pacific Railroad. It now serves as a stop on the Trinity Railway Express. The upper floors have now been converted into loft condominiums.
http://www.citynoise.org/upload/15793.jpg

The freight warehouse for the development is this building:
http://www.citynoise.org/upload/15794.jpg
It has always been known as the T&P Warehouse and has been vacant for about 20 years. There is a current plan to redevelop it into a mixed use project, but the developer still hasn't started construction. There is skepticism on many people in the city as to whether the project will actually get off the ground. Finally the third building in the development was the U.S. Post Office, also pictured in the thread.
http://www.citynoise.org/upload/16247.jpg

I'm currently serving on a citizen's committe that is exploring moving some of the functions of our city government into the Post Office. All three buildings were designed by Fort Worth Architect Wyatt C. Hedrick. The T&P buildings were done in the Zig-Zag Moderne style (Art Deco) and the Post Office is a mix of Beaux Arts and Neo-Classical architecture.

At one time, the building (Landmark Tower) with the fire escape had the longest straight run external staircase. However, it was all imploded on March 18, 2006, so the building and the fire escape no longer exist. It was rumored that a 50 story skyscraper would replace the Landmark Tower. The company that imploded it have told everyone that the skyscraper replacement has been scrapped. However, the two story hole in the ground is still there, almost one year after the demolition. New rumors indicate they will construct an underground parking garage with a public park on top.

I have taken many photos of downtown, but I haven't posted them lately because I have just been too busy. I can start a new thread to show some of my views of Fort Worth.

Good info John, thanks.

These pics are interesting, very cool, and kind of moody. I guess it's the black & white that does it. I likes 'em though. That staircase shot is crazy. Love it. Thanks for the pics.

You know, it is a shame these threads drop off the front page so fast. The photos are really great and should be enjoyed by more.

Even though I'm a pure preservationist, I actually supported the demolition of the Landmark Tower. The building was in such bad shape, I honestly (as an architect) don't think it could have been saved by any developer. The implosion was the first time that a former tallest building in the city was demolished.

Great pics thanks. You know I always thought that the Water Park was in Dallas. Yeah it's in Logan's Run and few other movies. Did L. Halprin design it?

While I'm not a big fan of Texas cities (I do like San Antonio though) and I think Austin is way too over-hyped ..I've heard that Fort Worth is a real sleeper (meaning there's more there than it's given credit for). I'd like to know more. I know it does have one the best designed museums in the world.

John R
Apr 26, 2007, 4:17 AM
Phillip Johnson designed the Water Gardens. Halprin designed Heritage Park, where some of the other photos were shot. Heritage Park has the observation platform jutting out from the bluff and trees.

Actually, Fort Worth has two of the best designed museums. Louis Kahn designed the Kimbell Art Museum and it opened in 1972. Tadao Ando designed the Modern Art Museum and it opened in 2002. The Kimbell is expanding and Renzo Piano will be designing a separate building across the street from both the Kimbell and the Modern. Ricardo Legorreta is designing the new Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. All of these museums are in our Cultural District.

I agree, I'm not a fan either. Dallas reminds me of a Texas version of Atlanta...the same could be said of Houston. If I had to choose between Austin and Asheville, North Carolina....there would be no choice....Asheville in a landslide. However, like you, I do like San Antionio....it represents what I always thought of Texas when I was younger. I also think that Fort Worth is a sleeper. Now that our growth is taking off, I hope that we do not make the mistakes of other large Texas cities...the list is too long to repeat.

The one thing after looking at these pics again is that there aren't very many people in most of them... even in the pics from downtown. With them being in black and white it almost feels post-apocalyptic. I guess a panther could be asleep in the middle of Main St.

Maybe I've been in SF too long now and I'm used to alot of street activity. I love my hometown but it seems almost small townish without any pedestrians to speak of.

I understand. I did not intend to capute street life in this set of photos. Perhaps I could provide everyone with a set of photos that captures street life. As far as black and shite is concerned....I believe black and white help to focus attention on details. So much get lost in translation with color photos.
