THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government has taken over the disputed land which was earlier earmarked for the construction of a bus terminal near Enchakkal, based on a court order. The High Court had earlier rejected the case filed against the taking over of 1.48 acres of land.

The State Government had earmarked 5.80 acres of land here for the construction of a bus terminal for long distance buses. As part of this, the Government had acquired 4.32 acres of land and a private land owner had filed a case against acquiring the remaining land.

However, the High Court rejected the petition against this following which the district administration and the KSRTC authorities decided to take over the land. Though the authorities had asked the land owner to vacate the place within 48 hours, the land owner failed to do so. As a result, on Monday, the district administration and KSRTC officials reached the site and took over the custody of the property.

It was in 2004 that the then state government had decided to construct a modern bus terminal at Enchakkal for shifting the long distance buses’ terminal from Thampanoor as part of reducing the traffic congestion in the city.

But, following the dispute over the acquisition of land, the authorities could not commence the construction of the bus terminal even after five years.

The Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority (TRIDA) was entrusted with the responsibility of constructing the bus terminal for the KSRTC. As per the proposal, all the super class services operated using deluxe and Volvo buses and other long-distance buses of the Corporation were expected to operate from the proposed terminal at Enchakkal.

The main idea behind the construction of the proposed new terminal was to reduce the congestion in the city by diverting long-distance buses through the Kazhakkoottam-Kovalam NH Bypass to Enchakkal.

In orange KSRTC and JNNURM livery, the buses will be numbered JNT 1, JNT 2 etc

The bus is in "kneel down" mode, with its adaptable suspension lowered to enable people to board from the side walk.

An illustrious assembly including Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan, Union External Affairs Minister Dr Shashi Tharoor, Ports Minister M Vijayakumar, LSG Minister Paloli Mohammedkutty and Transport Minister Jose Thettayil introduce the Volvo 8400 to Kerala.

The only city in Kerala to have a public transport system goes truely high-tech.

http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/3086/img6841rs.jpg

The CM, Tharoor and the other Ministers took a ride on the Volvo, probably the only time we will see a city bus get Z-grade security, including pilots and escorts, lol!!!

The construction base of the VHK consortium sub-contracted by Punj Lloyd to complete TCRIP is getting ready at Anamugham on the Bypass.

The erection of the massive hot mix plant is nearing completion, the concrete batching plant is already operational.

Work is now all set to pick up pace as the consortium's heavy machinery arrives. And soon our Volvos will have a lot more world-class roads to zip over.

Ajaypp's First ride on the Volvo

Yeap, actions are better than words and even better than pictures. So rather than yacking about or clicking pics of the new darlings of the capital city, the Volvo 8400s, yours truely took a few rides on them to see how right the supporters and cynics are.

Here are some of the pictures of the trips taken from Kumarapuram to Technopark and back on Volvos, JNT 1 and JNT 2.

Leaving Kumarapuram at 1341 Hrs on JNT 1; bus is about 60% full even at this off-peak time.

The staff are very polite and helpful; professional. The conductor comes to the passengers with his ETM.

Zooming through the gate, the Volvo leaves all others in its wake. Meanwhile, a Technopark security guard has boarded to ensure that no unauthorised personnel alight within the campus.
