More foriegn nationals are making the city home. Their spending power is creating another boom in the city. Maldivian nationals are some of them

Some 4,000-odd Maldivian nationals call Thiruvananthapuram home. They have been arriving here in large numbers in order to seek medical help.

More than 70 per cent residing here are between 10 and 35 years of age. They come here to seek medical advice and find admissions in schools and professional colleges across the state. Our primary responsibility is to look after their welfare. We want to do so with the help of the state government. I occasionally meet the commissioner of police, otherwise, there is hardly any communication with government officials.”

Also, a lot of money is being spent on shopping

George Brody is MobME Chairman

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram, July 26 MobME Wireless Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of the city-based Torque, has announced the appointment of the US-based investor, Mr George Brody, as its Chairman.

According to Mr Sanjay Vijayakumar, CEO, MobME, Mr Brody has invested in the company and will also work on efforts to help MobME grow its mobile media and entertainment business and enter the international market. He will also assist the company with its plans to go public in the next two-three years, he added. However, Mr Vijayakumar declined to reveal details about the value of Mr Brody’s investment in MobME.

Mr Brody is an angel investor in several start-ups in the US and brings with him over 30 years of experience in the technology industry, Mr Vijayakumar said. Mr Brody has worked with Nortel Networks and was Vice-President and General Manager of Nortel Networks wireless networks solutions division, he added.

MobME, which was spun-off from Torque earlier this year, was set up with funding from several NRI investors. The company is now in discussions with venture capital firms to raise between $7 million and $10 million in the next few months.
In about three weeks, MobME will formally launch several new products in the mobile value-added services space, Mr Vijayakumar said. Some of these products such as FastAlerts and Mobshare are currently being tested and have received a good response, he stated.

FastAlerts is a Web 2.0 communication tool that can provide instant alerts to a number of users using multiple systems such as SMS, e-mail and voice alerts, while Mobshare is a Web-based tool that allows mobile phone users to share pictures and videos shot using their phones, he explained. The company is also working on generating content for use in mobile phones and will announce details soon, he added.

Started two years ago by a group of engineering students from Thiruvananthapuram, Torque is based at the Technopark- Thiruvananthapuram.

:hell: It's really great to see all these things happening in trivandrum
{infosyscampus, iist,indian institute of scientific research,techno city,vizhinjam etc etc}
but there is one thing which makes me wonder ,why our media, esspecially printing media is giving little importance to all these things.
Am sure about one thing that if ane of these projects like IIST was going to be materilised in KOCHI .our media would have boasted about it.
according to me the media has put a cover over the developments of TRIVANDRUM

Technopark headquartered IBS gives IBM, Unisys a run for their money

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 1: IBS Software Services, a Kerala-headquartered IT company that began its operations about 10 years back, is now giving global software giants like IBM and Unisys a run for their money.

IBS, which began its operations here in September 1997, has become a leading global provider of new generation IT solutions to travel, transportation and logistics (TTL) industries of major airlines, airports, oil and gas companies, seaports, cruise lines and tour operators worldwide.

Its 70 high profile clients include leading airlines like Emirates, Qantas, Cathay Pacific, leading airports including Heathrow, Gatwick and Dubai as well as oil giants such as Shell and British Petroleum.

The company's client base also includes cruise liners like Cunard (Queen Mary II and Queen Elizabeth II), Royal Caribbean Cruise and Star Cruise and leading resorts like Vail Resorts, Inc. (VRI), the premier mountain resort operator in the US, Brendan Vacations and Orbitz.

Addressing reporters here Wednesday, V.K. Mathews, chairman of IBS, said the company was started with a staff of only 55.
"We began with a paid up capital of Rs.1.76 crore (Rs.17.6 million) and today it has touched more than Rs.800 crore (Rs.8 billion)," he said.
"During the one decade of its existence IBS has done three domain-based acquisitions of companies abroad," said Mathews.
Last week, General Atlantic, a leading global private equity firm, invested $60 million (Rs.2.42 billion) in IBS.
"This investment is the single largest private equity (PE) investment in Kerala and probably also the largest PE investment into an IT products company in the country," said Mathews.

After General Atlantic deal, IBS scouts for MRO buys
Economy Bureau
Posted online: Thursday , August 02, 2007 at 0035 hrs IST

Thiruvanananthapuram, Aug 1 After garnering India's biggest private equity (PE) investment in IT products, IBS is scouting for good buys in the MRO (maintenance, repair and overhauling) space. Two or three potential acquisiton candidates are in the shortlist.

IBS software, a Technopark-based products company in travel, transportation and logicals (TTL) verticals, has grown 700% in paid-up capital in a decade.

Not sated by $60 million preferential shares in investment from the Greenwich-based PE giant General Atlantic, IBS is also working on a roadmap for an IPO in 2009. "We're targeting to be valued at $1 billion by then," Mathews told reporters, here.

In the last five years, the company has made three domain-based takeovers, two in US and one in UK.
The company has ten overseas offices.

Great honour for India's best Bio-technology research centre:notacrook:

The cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh decided "to place RGCB as an autonomous institute under the administrative control of the Department of Biotechnology", Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi told reporters in New Delhi.

Following the implementation of the decision "the RGCB will be the only central institute in the area of biotechnology in Kerala", said Dasmunsi.

"The takeover will have a major role in implementing relevant biotechnology projects in the state as well in the entire southern region."

The RGCB aims at researching about cancer, human genetics, protein engineering, molecular reproduction, molecular microbiology, and neurobiology and plant molecular biology.

The minister said the transfer would also help RCGB develop into "a national research centre for bio-drug discovery programmes based on the knowledge of traditional systems of medicines prevalent in Kerala".

It will also help the country "to utilise the institute's expertise in cell and molecular biology for developing diagnostic and prognostic markers for disease".

The move may also help "to provide adequate research and teaching facilities for human resource development in biotechnology"

India's Animation hubs are overtaking the Philippines, Korea and Taipei.

Come alive with the hot buzzword, Animation
Tuesday - Jul 31, 2007
Televisionpoint.com Correspondent

Major companies like Walt Disney, Imax and Sony are continuously outsourcing cartoon characters and special effects to India that is enjoying its newfound status as a preferred destination for outsourcing thanks to low production costs. In fact it is steadily overtaking the Philippines, Korea and Taipei.
With the big studios having state-of-the-art facilities equipped with SGI, 3DMax and SoftImage, Maya, SFX and processing motion capture facilities in Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and Trivandrum, India is now a global player in this industry. Today there are a number of animation training studios in Mumbai and students have plenty to choose from.

Hanuman, a 2D animation movie, was a major success in the country. However, the honour of being the first animated film in India goes to Ashok Kaul's Bhaggmati: The Queen of Fortunes (2005). Hanuman's success story lies, perhaps in its simple storyline. The film traces the journey of this mythical God cum superhero, from his days as a cute miracle-working baby to his ultimate triumph in the army of Lord Ram.

The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IISST), a prestigious academic project of the Indian Space Research Organisation, is all set for take-off in Thiruvananthapruam

The curriculum at the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology is modelled along the lines of what is being offered by the Indian Institutes of Technology and at other top-notch institutes conducting programmes in electronics and communication, mechanical engineering and aerospace engineering

The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology will enable students to further help develop the country’s prowess in space technology, one that has led to the launch of rockets like the PSLV-C7
In short, every system is ‘go’ for September when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is expected to lay the foundation stone for the institute, which will eventually come up amidst picturesque settings at Ponmudi, near Thiruvananthapuram

Thanks Sreekumar.
What you said is correct. All over the world those black sheeps are there. They go and buy cheap land and then start hyping it without any base. They can even buy media and reporters. Some of the channels are already airing the paid programs without labeling as advertisements.
Here is a real story happened to me 2-3 days back.

One broker approached me (for selling a flat in a particular place). He told me about several IT initiatives and finally said ‘X ‘company is planning to employ some 1 lakh people in 2 years. He did not know that I am working for this ‘X’ company. I told him that I am working for the ‘X’ company and I will be happy if I can find some 3000 people in next 2 years. Then I said I do not have money. Still he was not willing to give up. He told me that I will get 25000 rent in the same area within next 2 years and you can easily pay EMI.

This is how they are trapping people into debt. I do not deny that fact that appreciation will be there. But see how much it is hyped.

Many people do not know that IT can not happen overnight and it has its own constraints. So their prey is mainly people from non-IT area. The sad part is that once people realize the facts, they must have lost the money already. My view is that in such situation we should make the media accountable. But again they are very good at washing off their hands.

Accentia Technologies acquires two U.S. firms

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Accentia Technologies, at the Technopark campus here, has acquired two IT companies based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the United States (U.S.). The GRS Physicians Billing Services and the GRS Systems are both established brands in the U.S. health care insurance field.

With this acquisition, Accentia Technologies gains control over two entities that provide billing and collection services to over 600 hospitals, clinics and their insurance collaborators in the U.S.

Chief Executive Officer of Accentia Technologies Pradeep Viswambharan entered the IT industry with the establishment of Geosoft, a medical transcription company in Technopark, and later Iridium, a business process outsourcing firm.

Recently, after taking over the Mumbai-based Accentia Technologies, Mr. Viswambharan had merged Geosoft and Iridium with it to expand the capital base, which is expected to grow to Rs.100 crore during the current fiscal. “We expect to reach the target in 2007 itself, considering the value of the two U.S. companies acquired and some more acquisitions on the way,” Mr. Pradeep said.

Accentia Technologies plans to build its own campus in the State capital to provide employment to over 1,000 hands in the near future.

T'PURAM: The State Government on Wednesday floated fresh global tenders for the prestigious Vizhinjam Container Transshipment Project.

According to the new estimates, the initial project cost enveloping facilities and equipment is estimated to be Rs 2,390 crore. The firms are to submit bids by 4.30 pm on October 31 2007.

A consortium led by two Chinese firms had won the original bids in 2005, but was denied clearance by the Centre citing security concerns, forcing the state to think of fresh tenders.

The Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd (VISL), the company formed by the state to develop external infrastructure for the project, has floated the fresh tenders, Law and Ports Minister M Vijayakumar said on Wednesday. VISL CEO and Ports Secretary L Radhakrishnan is the project licensor.

The port is planned in three phases, and once it is completed, mother ships of up to 12,000 TEUs can berth here. The 16-m depth available at the location would be increased to 18.7 m in a phased manner. The completed port is expected to handle 1.8 million containers a year.
The Request for Proposal (RFP) documents cost Rs 30,000, but those who had bid in 2005 can get them free. L&T Ramboll Consulting Engineers Ltd are the technical consultants for the project. After the Centre had rejected the initial bid, the State Government, in April 2007, conducted an Investors’ Meet — the first for a single project — in Thiruvananthapuram that attracted 43 Indian and foreign firms.
Companies like the Russian Rosoboron which handles Russian defence deals, Rajeev Chandrasekhar’s Jupiter Infrastructure and Gammon India have shown interest in the project.

It is interesting to see technopark's growth. Past 2 years it has added around 10000 people.

A four member delegation from Kuwait Finance House visited Technopark and held discussions with Senior Manager (Business Development) Technopark Mr. M. Vasudevan. The delegates included Mr.Ali O. Al-Ghannaam, Dept Manager-International Real Estate Dept; Mr. Abdul Naser A. Al-Subaih, Deputy Assistant GM-Investment Sector; Mr. Mohammad Jalal Uddin, Senior Investment Manager, International Real Estate Dept; Mr. Mathew Thomas, Investment Risk Manager, Investment Sector. They were highly impressed by Kerala and the Technopark campus and expressed their interest in investing in IT/ITES cos. in Kerala.

It is funny to see their frustruation to wrong target and the foul mouth resulted due to this. They must have used this against their corrupt local administration (also to their ministers) which is dumping money to black holes. Any way we have this fun treat occassionally.

ISRO is saving billions for India. Planning to go commercial too. Now India is the second country in the world with this technology.
Many of the research products are used in medical industry.

Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSCC), Thiruvananthapuram, has designed, developed and tested the scramjet as part of the ongoing work on air-breathing propulsion. VSSC demonstrated the scramjet for seven seconds at Mach 6 (six times the speed of sound) through a series of ground tests.

The complex air-breathing rockets under development use atmospheric oxygen during flight, while today's rockets carry both the oxygen and the fuel. As such they will be lighter, more efficient and cost some 15 times less than the conventional ones.

The next step would be to test it on ground at Sriharikota, enhance to Mach 10 and then on a Rohini sounding rocket, "which would be a major achievement," a spokesman said. An actual rocket using this technology would be at least 10 years away.

According to the release, "Other than US, which has recently carried out in-flight demonstration of supersonic combustion for a short duration (at a record Mach 10), work related to supersonic combustor designs in Japan, China, Russia, Australia, Europe and others are either in their initial or ground testing phase."

Current launchers cannot be re-used. The cost per kg of payload of such systems is a high $12,000-15,000 per kg. To make space transport more affordable, this cost has to be cut to $500-1,000 per kg. It will need both, a reusable and recoverable system and a more efficient propulsion system like air-breathing rockets. This is what space-faring nations are working at.

Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL), the company formed by the State Government as the nodal agency for the execution of this dream project of Kerala, floated global tenders for the project on Wednesday.

Mr. Vijayakumar said the port, at the completion of its first phase of development, would be able to receive ships of up to 8,000 TEU (Twenty Equivalent Units). The project is conceived in such a way that, in the subsequent phase of its development, ships of even 12,000 TEU could easily berth at the port. The biggest ships currently on the international sea routes do not exceed 9,500 TEU in capacity, he said.

The project cost is estimated at the level of $580 million (about Rs.2,390 crore). The Government had appointed a company called IL&FS Infrastructure Development Corporation as the strategic adviser for the project. The technical consultants for the project are L&T-RAMBOLL Consulting Engineers Limited, ROGGE Marine Consulting GMBH of Germany, RAMBOLL of Denmark and L&T Capital Company Limited.

Vizhinjam is located 8 km south of the State capital Thiruvananthapuram, on the west coast of the country. The biggest advantage of the location is its proximity to international shipping routes and the East-West shipping axis. The seabed here has a 20-metre contour depth within one nautical mile of the coast. The sea here has little littoral drift close to the coast and, therefore, requires hardly any maintenance dredging, Mr. Vijayakumar said.

Private developers have been advised to first assess their eligibility on the basis of the stipulations given in the ‘qualification criteria’ before obtaining the ‘request for proposal’ documents.

The sprawling grounds of the Chitranjali Studio complex crowning the Thiruvallam hills in Thiruvananthapuram is witnessing a unique experiment in harnessing the strength and imagination of its employees to create the State’s first film city-cum-recreation centre

Take 70 acres of verdant land, mix it with the fertile imagination and hard work of a couple of hundred employees, add the spirited leadership of an IPS officer, and you have what it takes to revive a flagging public enterprise and redefine the concept of urban recreation.

The sprawling grounds of the Chitranjali Studio complex crowning the Thiruvallam hills on the city border are the crucible of a unique experiment in harnessing the strength and imagination of employees to create the state’s first film city-cum-recreation centre.

The enterprise which falls under the Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KSFDC), is today poised for an image makeover after years of neglect which took it to the verge of collapse.

Spearheading the revival is the incumbent managing director Jacob Thomas, an IPS officer who took over in January this year. The regeneration of the campus involves landscaping 50 acres with flower beds, lawns, shrubs, vines and trees of a multitude of species. Terrain features, water bodies, and buildings constructed to create sets for shooting films constitute the other features.

A brainstorming session convened earlier this year came up with the idea of beautifying the campus and creating a film city. The session decided to make use of the 70 acres of prime land to create a visual spectacle and to attract visitors to the campus to mobilise resources. The employees also resolved to take up the project themselves without consultancy services.

The project proposes the creation of a butterfly garden featuring over 140 species of butterflies and a birdscape where visitors can view endemic and exotic species of birds. Both these facilities depend on the creation of pseudo habitats to attract and retain the winged guests.

Another highlight of the project is a rainwater harvesting system with three artificial lakes. The water bodies are to be stocked with fish and swans. Pedal boats will be introduced to attract visitors. The existing pond on the campus is being converted into a swimming pool to be used for film shooting.

There are plans to create walking circuits, indoor stadium, cottages, cafeteria, ice-cream parlours and a swimming pool. A convention centre that can accommodate up to 600 persons and a catering service are additional income-generating components. Another proposal is to install a powerful telescope on the grounds to make use of the panoramic view from the hilltop. A film museum and a light-and-sound show on the history of films are also on the anvil. “The campus will offer the ideal location for a weekend outing in the lap of nature. We have plans to set up a Chitranjali Club with membership open to the public. The details are being worked out,” says Mr. Thomas.

Film sets, including a nalukettu, railway station, farmhouse and temple, are coming up at various locations on the campus. The features are being designed in the modular form to serve multi-purpose facilities. For example, the railway station building will double up as cottages for lodging while the bogies can be used to ferry visitors around the campus.

Simultaneously, plans are afoot to modernise the studio facilities and outdoor units. “After all, creating infrastructure for the film industry remains our core area. If all goes well, by the end of 2008, a filmmaker can enter the Chitranjali grounds with an idea and walk out with the prints of the film, ” says Mr. Thomas.

Thiruvananthapuram: Piling work for the Rs.245.58-crore international terminal complex being constructed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for Thiruvananthapuram international airport will be completed in September.

Over 200 piles have been completed. The authorities are taking up the construction of four to five piles every day. The piles are being simultaneously tested to check if they can withstand the load.

The Rs.165-crore first phase of the terminal complex includes a Rs.115-crore terminal building, apron and a car park in front of the building which can accommodate 575 cars. In addition, parking facility will be provided for the vehicles bringing VVIPs and buses.

“The work is proceeding as per schedule. Over 250 labourers are working on the site round the clock. The terminal will be completed by September 2008 and the commissioning is scheduled for December 2008,” airport director K. Natarajan, who has been promoted as General Manager, Vigilance, at the AAI corporate headquarters in New Delhi, told The Hindu.

The Chennai-based Consolidated Construction Consortium has been entrusted with the work of the terminal, which has a floor area of 23.299 sq. metres. The firm has set up a concrete plant near the site to ensure round the clock work. The AAI has demarcated the site from the operational area by erecting barricades to ensure that flight operations and civil works are not affected.

The work on the AC plant and the ancillary buildings will be taken up after the pile-work is completed in September. Fabrication work for the main terminal building and other works will be taken up simultaneously after September.

The three-storeyed building, constructed on Chaka side and facing the Parvathi Puthanar, has been designed using modern concepts. Basically of tubular structure of elliptical geometry, the building will be constructed using modern construction materials and covered with heat-reflecting toughened glass. All facilities similar to in a world-class airport such as escalators, elevators and aerobridges will be provided. The new terminal complex will have 18 check-in counters, 20 immigration counters, 11 customs counters, two security gates, two baggage claim belts, a bus lounge and a Rs.5-crore sewerage system. The escalator, elevator and the aerobridges will be procured for the airport by the AAI.

Four parking bays would be set up in the first phase at a cost of Rs.14.5 crore, AGM, AAI, S. Aboobacker, said. The four bays would be linked to the 3,398 m runway that would be used for the flight operations.

The tender process for constructing the taxiway to connect the existing runway to the parking bay is being finalised by the AAI, General Manager, AAI, Projects, V.K. Malhotra, said.

In the Rs.80-crore second phase, extension of the terminal building by 50 m on both sides and construction of four parking bays will be taken up.

he said the Institute was also in the process of developing a new artificial heart valve that would help the patients to undergo MRI scans if required. The new valve will make this possible as its casing would be made of Titanium. Now, the casing is made of a cobalt-chromium alloy. Chennai-based TTK Health Care, which is producing and marketing the present valve, is also involved in the development of the new valve. The new valve is expected to cost about Rs. 16,000 a piece, almost the same as the present valve.

Open Voice-TM, as the solution is called, is a package based on open source Asterisk platform, allowing enterprise grade voice solutions for mobile operators, call centres, corporates, interactive response systems, radio and television stations.

The biggest attraction of the solution would be its cost effectiveness, as it is based on Linus using Linux-based PCs and hardware, MobMe CEO Sanjay Vijayakumar said in a press release here today.

MobMe, floated by Torque Technology Solutions launched by engineering students as a technology incubative startup, had raised investment from NRI angel investors at the technology exhibition GITEX held in Dubai recently, the release said

Vizhinjam box terminal tender draws 28 firms so far
Posted on 02-10-2007
Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 1 As many as 28 companies have so far bought the request for proposal (RFP) in response to the fresh tender floated by the Kerala Government for developing the proposed international container transshipment terminal at Vizhinjam, near here.

Foreign cos

Six foreign companies are among those which have bought RFP and they include Maersk, Singapore Port Authority, Marubeni Shipping Company of Japan and Dredging International of Belgium, according to official sources.

Indian firms

The Indian firms include Reliance, Zoom Developers, L&T, Gammon India, BPL India, Jupiter Capital, Nagarjuna Group and Mehtas (both based in Hyderabad). Of them, Mumbai-based Zoom Developers, in a consortium arrangement with two Chinese companies, and Gammon India were the two companies left in the last leg of the race for contract when the tender was floated last time.

Though the consortium led by Zoom Developers subsequently won the tender, the contract could not be finalised for want of security clearance from the Centre. This necessitated floating of the fresh tender. The last date for submitting the bids is October 31.

The terminal is being implemented in three phases at a total outlay of Rs 5,348 crore. The work on the first phase, costing Rs 2,390 crore, is slated to begin some time next year after finalising the contract.

Meanwhile, Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd (VISL), formed by the State Government to facilitate the implementation of the container terminal, has started the preliminary work on putting in place the basic infrastructure for the project such as rail and road connectivity, electricity and water supply. The total cost of the work is estimated around Rs 80 crore.

VISL has entered into an agreement with Kerala Water Authority (KWA) for supply of water to the project area and is in discussions with the Kerala State Electricity Board to ensure electricity supply. It has also entrusted RITES to carry out a study on providing road and rail connectivity for the project.

It is funny to see Dubai Ports in the fray. They have already got a contract for a port in Kerala. Without laying a single stone there, why are they competing for Vizhinjam? I heard that their motive is to delay the Kerala projects after winning the contracts. They are already doing it for vallarpadom siting lot of excuses. This is just to avoid the competition to their major revenue areas. I guess we should not give Vizhinjam to them.

Reliance Industries has proposed to develop the Rs 4,500-crore (Rs 45 billion) Deepwater International Container Trans-shipment Terminal at Vizhinjam in Kerala.

The company has already submitted a proposal to the Kerala government in this regard.

Confirming this, sources close to the development said RIL's plan to develop the trans-shipment terminal was aimed at supplementing its Rs 25,000-crore (Rs 250 billion) retail foray. If it gets the green signal, the company is likely to rope in an international operator to construct and operate the terminal.

While RIL executives declined to comment on the issue, Kerala government officials said, "it's premature to offer a comment."

The Vizhinjam terminal, a deep-draught port and trans-shipment hub, would help RIL integrate the supply chain and logistics requirements of its retail initiatives, as well as its special economic zones, the sources said.

The RIL proposal comes at a time when the Indian government has denied security clearance to Chinese firms -- Kaidi Electric Company and China Harbour Engineering Company -- which won the mandate for developing the port along with Mumbai-based Zoom Developers.

Apart from RIL, major shipping players, including Maersk, Port of Singapore Authority, Gammon India, and Dubai Ports World have evinced interest in the trans-shipment terminal.
"The Vizhinjam project is on the international shipping route close to the east-west shipping axis, with a natural depth of 20 metre, and close to the sea coast. This will substantially reduce the transportation costs of any company," industry analysts said.

With property prices overheating in the top eight 'A' grade realty markets (Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune and Ahmedabad), 11 tier two cities have caught the attention of investors as future growth areas.

These cities are likely to witness a spate in construction activities and the shift from established markets to emerging locations has already begun.

Consultancy firm Ernst & Young in its recent city ranking exercise has identified 11 new markets categorised as 'B' cities, which hold maximum potential for investors.

In its latest survey Ernst & Young has named six cities including Surat, Chandigarh, Nagpur, Vishakhapatnam, Vadodara and Jaipur as the emerging cities. Close on the heels are Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Nashik, Indore and Ludhiana.

The French Trade Commissioner Mr Jean-Louis Poli visited Technopark on 26th September 2007 as part of his two-day visit to Kerala. He had a meeting with CEO and officials of Technopark, Mr. Radhakrishnan Nair, CEO, made a brief presentation on the overall business climate in Kerala, particularly with reference to the IT and ITES industry in the State and the investment friendly initiatives of the State Government, the facilities in Technopark and the immense opportunities available for private sector with the new projects like Technocity

The fist news abt Technocity came almost 2 years back. Till now no concreate step has happened apart from sime press notes/SSC/ssp formers saying its going in right direction. The some guys in Kochi and TVM who are there in form in fighting ecch other status IT hub of the status. They are holding placard of 250 acre smart city(delay city) and 500 acre infocity(a non-starter as of now). But these guys havnt noticed 12, 500 acre knowledge city coming up near Bangalore.!

DLF plans Rs 60000 cr project in Bangalore

NEW DELHI: The country’s largest real estate company DLF has bagged the project for developing Bidadi Knowledge City of Bangalore, spread over 9,178 acres, which will be three times the size of DLF City in Gurgaon.

To be positioned as New Bangalore, the project will entail an investment of over Rs 60,000 crores, which is believed to be the largest ever investment by any private sector company.

Sources in DLF said this project will be developed in a 50:50 joint venture (JV) with Dubai-based firm Limitless Holdings, a sister company of Nakheel and part of the diversified Dubai World group.

They added that California-based architecture and design firm Calthorpe Associates have been appointed to prepare the master plan for the project. This new city would be developed based on the theme of ‘walk to work. The project will be developed at about 30km from Bangalore and 100km from Mysore.

Sources said the Konowledge City will have metro rail connection with Bangalore. They said there are proposals of metro stations and airports inside the township.

For better connectivity, Bangalore Metropolitan Regional Development Authority is planing a series of ring roads.

Bidadi Knowledge City will also have shopping malls, multiplexes and hotels.

Vizhinjam has lot of importance as its stategically located and a natural port. But i have simple queries abt the project...

1) What will be export potential of project? There are no industrial belts near this place. Neither TVM, Kollam or Kanykumari are industrially devloped. on mean time many industrial areas in TN like coimbatore, thirupur and then palakkadu in kerala nearer to kochi than any port. Kochi itself being industrial belt hyaving CSEZ and propsed puthvypin SEZ.

2) What will be import potential of project?
Once merchandise is arraived on port how its will be transported to other places as it lacks infrstructure? (TVM lacks well maintained road to connect to other industrial belts in the state and country.) Also whats the point in transporting the goods to TN when it has well developed ports.....

Please post it in Bangalore Thread, which is more relevant. Regarding state IT hub, I do not know whether any debate is necessary by looking at the current numbers(both number of employees & exports). Yes I agree with you that it is no where in comparison to Bangalore. Acquiring 200 acres for technocity is in the last stages, the delays are due to most of our rulers and beurocrats. Mostly this will be executed by Emaar or DLF.
Still wonders why this appears in TVM thread not in any other thread..

Please read news papers. and ask your self why firms including DPI are trying for it. Let them decide whether it is useful to them or not. Last time also the firms were ready for starting the work. You know how they were prevented from doing so. Most of the cargo journals describe this as future port of South Asia

Why should I divert the subject. I thought you got the answer. May be in detail...Major ports will serve not a smaller area. If you look that way then there may not be any major port necessary in Kerala. Just see how colombo or Singaport works. Are they just catering a colombo or singapore region alone. They can not survive like that. Now cargo to the whole india is handled by Colombo, Singapore, Dubai

Oh my goodnes. its planned as transhipment only.......ooops...

Thats if there are no ports in colombo or singapore, there need to be a port in southern tip. Now assume if there is sethusamudram project completed, then TUTICORIN port will rise into promonance. then there will be comptetion between these all 4 ports including proposed port vizinjam after all loser will be vizinjam as its not the gateway to india(Its foolish to use an internal tranport purpose). Now assume if there is sethusamudram project not completed, them its better to use colombo as its one of the most modern port in the whole world and strategically located than vizinjam.....
Also dont forget TN is also planning port near KK. So if Kerala plans a project 2007 and TN plans project in 2015 both will materialised together!!!

Let the shipping companies decide it. Let them decide the advantageous and how the natural depth matters. Currently India is loosing around 1200 crores per year in the transhipment. Use colombo, then use a small ship to indian port. This is exactly what they are going to replace

I do not know what you meant by hate. Trivandrum is less hyped means, less publicity compared to the extent of IT happenings. Also most of the claims here are supported with news item. I do not even see any body posting about the Asia tech park (starting construction there).
Now coming to Technocity..

The Kerala Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, said in State Assembly on Tuesday that of the 507 acres of land identified for the project, draft declaration had been published for 205 acres and the work in respect of survey of the remaining 302 acres, after discussions with the land-owners was progressing at a brisk pace. The Technocity project is envisaged as the fourth phase of development of the existing Technopark.

Growing in to the league of most strategic locations in India.

The Aerospace Command, a next generation leap for the IAF, is planned at Thiruvananthapuram, where the SAC began in a small way

T'URAM: When the Indian Air Force (IAF) celebrates its 75th birthday on Monday, it's also a big moment for the Southern Air Command (SAC), the youngest Command of the IAF which is poised for big leaps in the decades ahead.

An oath-taking ceremony, 'ollow Square,・will mark the Air Force Day celebrations on Monday at the SAC HQ at Akkulam. Air Officer Commanding-in- Chief Air Marshal Y R Rane will read out the oath to the Air Warriors.

This Air Force Day marks the culmination of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of the IAF, which was formed at Drigh Road, Karachi, on October 8, 1932. Its first aircraft flight was established on April 1, 1933, with four Westland Wapiti aircraft.

From March 1945, it was called the Royal Indian Air Force. The prefix royal・was removed on January 26, 1950.

Today, the IAF boasts some of the most modern fighters and other aircraft among the air forces of the world.

The SAC, formed on July 20, 1984, has emerged as one of the most important of the seven commands in recent years with the southern peninsula gaining in strategic and military importance.

SAC served the nation gloriously during the tsunami evacuation in Andaman and Nicobar and saw action in Maldives and Sri Lanka.

Covering 75 years of service, the IAF has big plans for Thiruvananthapuram and the SAC. The Aerospace Command, a next generation leap for the IAF, is planned at Thiruvananthapuram, where the SAC began in a small way.

The first Light Combat Aircraft squadron will be based at Sulur, and the IAF plans to transform Tanjore into a major fighter base with the latest acquisitions, including Sukhoi aircraft to be based there.

Guys,

Please do not do this kind of comparison between Kochi and TVM. Both cities are inside Kerala. It is will be best if both Kochi and tvm develop like that of Bangalore or Chennai.

You guys should understand that Coimbatore, mangalore, madurai etc is emerging.

Satyam is going to start a dev center in Madurai. Satyam do not have any dev center in kerala eventhough we have lot od empty IT parks.

Media has given max hype to smart city. other than that i have not seen any hyped news abt the projects in kochi or any other place in kerala. Smart city has been used a political and hence election issue by Prev UDF and Ummen chandy. so it has got max Media coverage. But similar projects like technocity, Hightech city by shobha or HDIL IT park didnt get much media coverage. apart from hype generated in these forums dev in kerala is nothing compared to other states. Many manifacturing units are being set up by truck/motor giant in citis like Chennai, Kovai, Bangalore, pune etc.

Abt technocity news, i have seen this news many times. C, taking over land is an issue. however, bigger issue is getting a promoter. Karnataka have handed over 12,500 acre IT city project to DLF. there were many takers in the fray to get the project even after being a very big project..There are no takers for many projects in kerala not just in TVM but also in kochi as well. See you know that An SSC guy is a BDM of EMAR MGF, even he could not convince his bosses to take up this project. If GoK works hard they may get promoters. ....
