Let's dedicate this thread to subway stations. Please limit your pics to only FOUR per system because nobody wants to see 150 pics of the same thing. These pics must show subway stations, meaning they must be underground or at least enclosed. No els, no at-grade stations, etc. SUBWAYS!!

Everyone knows the big vaults. Very famous.

But this? Very rare. Only one or two of these.

Your basic entrance canopy. Gotta keep those escalators dry.
http://beyonddc.com/images/photos/transit/metro/canopy-vasquare.jpg
Annnnd, how about an awful picture of the Rosslyn escalator? This is NOT the longest in the system. It's in the top 10, though.
http://beyonddc.com/images/photos/transit/metro/escalator01-rosslyn.jpg
And one from Baltimore for good luck.

Well, I was waiting for someone with pictures they'd taken themselves of the SF subways (BART and Muni Metro), but so far it hasn't happened so here are some I found on the net:
Muni Metro

Old-style (Boeing) cars at the point where they exit the underground system and go above-ground.

^^^I like 'em too in the tunnel. The rap against them had to do with the noise they make on the street in residential neighborhoods (imagine a jet fighter taxiing down your street). But the air conditioning and spaciousness is really nice compared to the Boeings and they just look a lot classier (I wish the grafitti jerks would lay off 'em).

Why are the subway trains in San Fran so short? Do they run shorter trains at a higher frequency than other cities? I can't fathom how crowded they must get.
Cirrus
03-14-2007, 02:05 PM
Those are basically streetcars that are running in a subway for a portion of their length, as I understand Muni.
San Francisco also has BART, which runs much longer trains.

Portland's Washington Park subway station (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Park_(MAX_station)). It's 70 meters deep. Pictured with an older crappy-ass LRT train... all the trains that serve this station are low-floor.
