Nedumbassery to go Hi-Tech
Thursday October 19 2006 09:33 IST
KOCHI: The 350-acre Hi-Tech City at Nedumbassery, to be promoted by Bangalore-based Sobha Developers, will be officially announced in December.
Barring a few patches, the land purchase is almost complete, T Balakrishnan, Principal Secretary (Industries and Commerce), told this website's newspaper.
The Hi-Tech City will be of international standards and will involve an investment of up to Rs 6,000 crore, ($1.4 bn approx).
It will have separate parks for information technology, biotechnology, hotels and resorts, residential complexes and villas.
The hi-tech city will generate jobs for more than 60,000 people, said government officials.
The Sobha Group, which has forayed into retail infrastructure in Bangalore, will also set up a global mall in Kochi on the lines of the one proposed in Bangalore.
The global mall will sport a five-star hotel, an ice-skating rink, a contemporary business tower and a convention centre.
The Hi-Tech City will be a modular mix of hyper-market with large-screen multiplexes and parking facilities.
The Sobha Group has said that it does not want any concessions from the government, barring speedy statutory clearances, Balakrishnan said.
Power will be generated in the Hi-Tech City by setting up captive power plants and water will be sourced through rain water harvesting by the investors themselves.
The Sobha Group proposes to come out with an initial public offering soon. The group is entering the capital market next month to raise funds for land acquisitions, its ongoing and future projects and to repay certain debts.
The group is actively involved in developing various campuses of Infosys, Wipro, Satyam and ICICI Bank in the country, apart from a large number of residential apartments.

CIAL MD Sriram Bharat announced India's biggest MRO -hangar
at Cochin International yesterday. It involves an initial investment
of Rs. 150 cr. The work is on to set up two hangars for large aircrafts.
The next phase involves four more for medium sized aircrafts.
The facility is coming up on a 33 acre land at Nedumbassery.
Kingfisher has plumped for the project. A few more companies have
lined up for the pie.
More, CIAL confirms setting up of IT park with an investment of
Rs.600 cr on 35 acres providing employment to 15000 people.
Phase I will provide employment to 5000 people.

The CIAL region I believe will be a tough competitor for Kakkanad....the region is already leading with three IT parks in the pipeline...the Sobha and Parsvnath along with the CIAL park...expecting to providing employment to nearly
1 lakh!!
I donno how they are going to acomodate 15000 pros in a mere 35 acre park..!!...they even cannot go for tall buildings in the area??..
when the regions inside a city become more and more competitive its the city of Kochi thats gonna be a tougher competitor for the IT hubs like Blore, Hyd...
Hey guys find out which are the such regions in kochi other than the above two which are the possible contenders for becoming city's nodal IT hub..!!
u can even think of regions which nobody talks of ( other than the usuals)....stating their advantages..

With IT parks already stretched for space and the industry growing 30 per cent every year, the government has identified 15 cities including Chandigarh, Mohali, Vizag, Guwahati, Jammu, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Kochi, Jaipur, Pune, Mysore and Bhubaneshwar. The self-sufficient townships are expected to be between 500 and 1,000 acres and will mainly cater to the IT and BPO sectors. It has also proposed private and public involvement in projects and constitution of a single-window clearance system.

Ark,
35 acres is more than enough to accomodate 15000 professionals. It requires less than 20 acres to accomodate that number.

ya I also heard about such a proposal long ago..
what about the Proposed semiconductor facility of NEST in the Islands?...
one more region I forgot was the kalamassery region..with its IT, BT and Media its gonna be well equippped for the 'contest'
it is a the trend of the new cities especially in the west called the new urbanism .-- in which a city has more or less a mixed development throughout....each neighbourhood or region willl be having its own facilities 4 job, commerce or any field being self sufficient i all aspects..with a few exceptions...the residents only have to commute to the next region for these 'exceptions'...public transportation like metro rail, suburban train etc are given more importance along with walking....private vehicles are discouraged to an extend in the way the cities are designed..

CIAL to take state to new heights
Friday November 3 2006 10:59 IST
http://www.newindpress.com/newimages/indpress.gif
NEDUMBASSERY: Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) will play a crucial role in the development of the state as it proposes to launch many new projects like Maintenance Repair Overhaul (MRO), Information Technology Park, aviation academy and chartered flight tourism, said CIAL Managing Director Shriram Bharath on Wednesday.
The proposal for launching the IT Park will be finalised soon. The recommendations of consultant Ernst & Young will be placed before the board of directors of CIAL at the next meeting.
The Rs 600-crore IT Park will be spread over 33 acres of land. It is expected to provide employment to 15,000 people in a phased manner. The board of directors will decide whether the proposed IT Park should be set up as a subsidiary concern or as a joint venture.
He said that CIAL has found more scope in ‘back-to-back tourism.’ With the foreign tie-up and participation of Kerala Tourism Department and tour operators, CIAL can promote chartered flight tourism from foreign destinations to Kochi.
But the attitude of our people should change. Infrastructure facilities should be developed. Homestay facilities should be enhanced as foreigners are fed up with hotel accommodations, he said.
The CIAL has other ambitious projects, like a full-scale maintenance hangar (MRO), on the anvil, Shriram Bharath said. The maintenance hangar, proposed to be constructed in 33 acres of land by spending Rs 150 crore to repair two wide-bodied aircraft and four narrow-bodied aircraft initially, would be the biggest in this continent.
Aircraft will have to wait for a longer period to get their aircraft repaired at the maintenance hangar in Singapore, which is superior in quality of service, when compared to the hangar in Dubai. Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, Air India and Jet Airways have maintenance hangars in the country.
But they are exclusively for their respective aircraft. The proposed MRO in Kochi would be the only one in the country to provide services to all airlines, he said.

it is the only one in India to provide service to all airlines....is the one coming up at Tvm of the same sort or just Air India
CIAL shows the way even to those around the world by the way how an airport can be built and managed with such minimal funds..and the way an airport can become useful for the state...the 'Nedumbassery Aircity' is gonna bring a considerable amount of foreign exchange and good number of jobs once the IT, BT ,BPO, educational centres and logistics centres are set up here..

The proposed Air India hangar is much smaller. I guess Air India wants to service the smaller AI Express aircrafts using this. Even this Air India initially wanted to set up at CIAL. But regionalistic politicians muscled the public sector airline into locating it at Trivandrum. It may still not be finalised as AI has most of its operations from Calicut which has more land available too. Also after the merger of AI and Indian, the whole idea may take a different shape.

Its a campus not a single building. The biggest building may be the Signature Tower
that Infopark announced recently - about 750,000 sqft. But this title will be short lived as
you can be sure of more and more milluion plus buildings in the dozens of private IT parks
announced recently like Sobha, CIAL, Parsvnath, Desai group (DD), etc.
Meanwhile BPL's venture looks set to materialize. There cannot be many hurdles
for this as not many will oppose if CPM supports it - Cong will never ! :D

Builders' meet in December
Staff Reporter - The Hindu (http://www.hindu.com/2006/11/13/stories/2006111320000300.htm)
KOCHI: Builders' Association of India (BAI), Kochi, will host BAI-National Convention 2006 (NATCON) between December 2 and 4, said chairman of the organising committee for BAI-NATCON M.V. Antony here on Sunday.
This is the first time in 65 years that BAI has chosen Kochi to host the All India Builders' Convention. About 2,000 delegates representing every aspect of the construction industry are expected to participate in the mega event that will be inaugurated by Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram at Hotel Le Meridien.
Kochi has been identified as one of the hubs of construction industry in the country. The city expects investments ranging between five and eight billion U.S. dollars over the next five years and deserved to host the mega event, he said.
Ajit Gulabchand, chairman and managing director of Hindustan Construction Company Limited, will deliver a keynote address. A technical seminar will be inaugurated by E. Sreedharan, chairman and managing director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.
V.S. Achuthanandan, Chief Minister, will be the chief guest at the valedictory function. Kris Gopalakrishnan, Chief Operating Officer of Infosys Technologies, will deliver the keynote address. Various Union and State Ministers too are expected to attend the inaugural and valedictory functions.

The International airport looks nothing more than a bus terminal.
The design is on the lines of traditional Kerala architecture, built during late 1990s. Unlike typical Indian airports which are shabby in both interior and exterior, this one received cheers from every visitor thus far for its facilities and service. This has been selected as the best airport in India for the past few years and the fastest in its growth too.

Cognizant too for Kochi
Cognizant also takes up space at the 350,000 sqft Muthoot Technopolis.
With this Kochi has emerged the de facto hub of the state IT where almost all IT majors are present.
Interestingly, Muthoot is going to replicate Technopolis success at Infopark and near Nedumbassery. They have already bought 10 acres at Nedumbassery.
To take stock of upcoming IT parks in Kochi :
Kakkanad
Infopark (the only govt owned one, in which maximum space is provided by private
sector) , Smart City (no telling :) ), Technopolis (Muthoot), Mather.
Nedumbassery
Sobha Hitech city, Parsvnath, CIAL IT park, Unitech, and Muthoot
Location not yet revealed
Abad, Chakolas, Desai.
All together these are set to provide tens of millions of sqft space - something unimaginable and impossible to replicate anywhere in Kerala, where only a govt owned laggard set up in early 1990s was the only IT facility till recently.

The scheduling of a national convention of the Builders' Association of India (BAI) in the city, for the first time in 65 years, has brought the city under the spotlight of the construction industry. The three-day event starts on December 2.
