Rome is doubling its metro network. Line C is under construction and Line D is in the final planning stages:

(note: this map does not include the surface tram lines)

^ I leave tomorrow on a trip to Rome and will be staying RIGHT where the Nievo stop will be on the D line. Too bad it's not finished yet :(

I wish there was more information I could find on the trams, I'm sure I'll be taking the #8 and #3 a lot. I assume you get on the tram and punch your ticket in one of those little machines near the doors?

By the way, congrats on extending your metro! Looks nice, can't wait to see it in person tomorrow

The trams work just like the buses; it's the same ticket, same ticket machines, and you can transfer from tram to bus with the same ticket as long as it's within the time limit (and hour and a half i think?). Transfers are limitless as long as you're on trams and buses (again, within the time limit). With the metro though, the ticket is the same but only one metro ride per ticket. You can still transfer to buses and trams though.

You're staying in trastevere! It's a fantastic neighborhood. Take the 8 tram to Largo Argentina to get to the historic center. I lived in Rome for 6 months on Via di Sant'Anna which is right next to the Largo Argentina tram stop. I'm going back in two weeks! Woohoo!

"Planned" as in decided on and funded, in Stockholm: none. :(
Copenhagen is getting not only an extension to the airport, but also a completely new line tho, M3, which will be a ring-line for the inner city.

Wasn't there a proposal for tram ring-line on the north side, so one could go across the north without having to first go to the city center?

Indeed there is :) "Tvärbanan" (=the Cross-line) is planned to get three extensions: north, northeast & east from the western end and northwest from the eastern end. In total it will connect to 5 subway stations, 4 commutertrain stations and one old LRT line (that will also get upgraded a bit so they're using the same technology).
And we're also getting a commutertrain tunnel under the Inner City that'll upwards of double trains/hour capacity.

But none of that is Metro as in Subway, which I believe is what Grumpy ment. :)

a few that i can think of include Vienna extending the U2, the construction of a new line running under the spine of Amsterdam, and the M4 project in Budapest

Amsterdam map (from Urbanrail.net)

and here's a link for the Budapest line- www.metro4.hu

BTW those plans for Rome are exciting, i will have to visit again when the new lines are open

In Amsterdam, the North-South line is currently u/c. More infos here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North/South_Line_%28Amsterdam_metro%29) and here is a map showing the current network with the NS-line u/c:

Where did you find this map, Swede?
http://www.urbanrail.de/eu/kob/cityring.gif

I think it's the first time I see the city ring in geographical proportion with the current M and S-system. Very interesting as it shows exactly how "urban" or "downtownish" ( ) this line really will be - it will exclusively run in super-dense inner city areas. Awesome. :)

I still don't get why UrbanRail.net still has the S-tog system as just a big monotone grey chunk, as the Copenhagen's S-system today fulfills UrbanRail.net's very own definition of what a metro system is.
Hell, even DSB defines it as a metro nowadays, but still calls it S-tog because of the simple fact that there is another system in Copenhagen called - Metro. :)
I mean, is there really any difference whatsoever between Copenhagen's S-tog and Stockholm's T-bana or Oslo's T-bane today? The last two are called metros simply because that's what they are referred to as in the native language ("subway"). I think the S-tog system suffers because it has a similar name to the many S-bahns in Germany (sans Belin and maybe Hamburg) that are commuter systems rather than metros.

^^ Does the S-Tog run totally independent from other modes of (rail) transportation? What's its frequency? Is it a system that mainly serves the city itself?

When living in CPH, I commuted on the S-Tog (which is literally translated the same as "S-Bahn" in Germany IIRC) from Birkerod, which is quite a way's away from the city center. I occasionally fell asleep on the outbound trip, which stops in Hillerod, and that's WAY out there! So it's not necessarily a "city" train per se.

The Metro on the other hand is a fully automated line on its own ROW--either as a subway near the city center or elevated rail near Orestad.

The system is complemented by Regional-Tog trains, which is indicated on that map by the darker gray, thin lines. At this point, the train connection between the airport and city center is on a Regional train, but as the Metro expansion indicates, this will soon be connected by the southern expansion.

Hamburg, Germany: One metro station (Überseequartier, autumn 2011) and one S-Bahn station (airport, end of 2008) under construction. The metro station will be used for a new line U4 that will share tracks with line U3.

1. Yes.
2. As of 1st of Jan 2007 - high/metro-like.
3. It stretches out to the suburbs just like the metro system in Stockholm and many other systems on the planet. It's great to use within the city itself, as well as commuting from a suburb to the city.

S-tog is metro.

Moscow Metro Projects for the Future:

After a decade of decline in 1990s, the situation with metro construction in Moscow has substantially improved in recent years. The city rather than the federal government is now paying for the majority of the costs, and funding is increasing year after year. The main diversion from the new metro construction - the obsession with monorails and light metros - is now almost a thing of the past. The northern extension of the Liublinskaya line (line 10) and the western extension of the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya line (line 3) are the two main priorities for the next few years. As of the time of this writing, the projected schedule of station openings is as follows:

Sept. 2007 -- Line 10: station "Trubnaya" (transfer to line 9).

Nov. 2007 -- Line 10: station "Sretenskiy Bul'var" (transfers to lines 1 and 6).

Dec. 2007 -- Line 3: stations "Kuntsevskaya" (transfer to line 4) and "Strogino". The existing segment "Kuntsevskaya" - "Krylatskoye" will become a part of line 3, while the shortened line 4 will terminate at "Kuntsevskaya".

2008 -- Line 3: station "Slavianskiy Bul'var".

2009 -- Line 10: stations "Dostoyevskaya" and "Mar'ina Roscha".

2009 -- Line 3: stations "Miakininskaya" and "Volokolamskaya".

2010 -- Line 3: station "Mitino" and a new yard.

2010 -- Line L1: station "Bitsevskiy Park" (transfer to line 6).

Later projects include (in no particular order):

- segment "Mar'ino" - "Ziablikovo" on line 10 with a transfer to line 2

- segment "Krasnogvardeyskaya" - "Brateyevo" on line 2 with a new yard

- segment "Novogireyevo" - "Gorodetskaya" on line 8

- segment "Vykhino" - "Pronskaya" on line 7

- new line L2 "Yugo-Zapadnaya" - "Novoperedelkino" with a transfer to line 1 and a new yard

- segment "Buninskaya Alleya" - "Ulitsa Ostaf'yevskaya" on line L1

All these segments are to be completed in the next 15 years, however, it would be naive to quote possible opening dates or even predict the priorities.
