These are all photos from my recent trip to Halifax. I still didn't get as comprehensive tour as I would've liked, but that just leaves some for the next time. :)

The weekend's weather could only be described as bizarre. After narrowly missing a wild snow/wind storm on Friday's drive down, Saturday was gorgeous and mild. That made me think I'd have a nice warm day Sunday to take a walk downtown. Alas, the winter lightning of Saturday night was followed by a sunny but cold day Sunday to walk around Dartmouth. Batteries charged and ready to go! While my fiancee and my cousin were both looking at wedding dresses, I took a walk around Halifax. The day ranged from sunny and mild, to sunny windy and cold, to windy with flurries. It changed about every 15 minutes. I lucked out that all the photos were from when it was sunny.

Got fed up with the cold, so I returned to my car to get my new toy I got for Christmas (Canon Rebel SLR film camera) and make my way down to the water again, then up to the citadel. I also took my digital, so here's the shots from that excursion.

After I returned to my car, I called my buddy for lunch, and ended up helping him buy a new car. All in all, it was a great weekend, even with the bizarre weather. That's all for this trip.

Halifax is such a great little city. I had a fabulous time when I was there 2 months ago. Drinking & dancing at both the Liquer Dome and Reflections made for some fun times. Wish I'd brought my camera with me to capture some of the city. But it looks like you did a good job! :)

Great pictures, thanks for posting them! In case anybody is wondering why the streets are so empty, well, it's cold as hell right now :). I like that apartment building you posted in the 5th picture, it's probably my favourite in Dartmouth (it looks better from the other side). It was designed by Arthur Erickson, one of my favourite Canadian architects.

I'm not too happy with the way Boston Pizza handled their move into Granville Mall, the dark paint looks kind of weird compared to the rest of the storefronts.

Thanks everyone for the comments. The photos look empty for three reasons really, it was unseasonably cold, the photos were taken between 10am and 12 noon (4pm-5pm on Sunday for Dartmouth), and I have an unfortunate talent that could make Tokyo in rush hour look like a ghost town in my photos. :P

Those buildings were demolished around 1990 for an office tower that was never constructed. The city bought the land during the 90s when it was cheap and now it's being swapped to the province for an office development.

I can't really see the final result being good for Barrington. The province recently took over a building nearby and now the storefront areas are being used as office space.

Unfortunately, Barrington suffers from having too many dead storefronts and not enough residents. If a couple stretches of mediocre buildings were torn down and replaced with substantial modern buildings the street would probably improve a lot but that seems unlikely given the fact that various groups are trying to have the entire street preserved in its current state. Maybe that would have worked in 1950 but it's a little late now.

Good question. I don't have the answer to that one, maybe one of the Halifax residents can help us out on that.

Yeah, that's pretty much the standard Mariott sign, and they do look cheap. Not sure what it's like inside, either. Even as the Sheraton, I wasn't a big fan of it, though they did have nice ballrooms, especially the ones with the balconies overlooking the harbour.

Halifax and Victoria are probably the nicest looking Canadian cities between 200-600 thousand people.

I walk through the Marriott (formerly the Casino Hotel & the Sheraton) all the time, and it seems same as always, it's a nice hotel inside. It's the largest in Halifax, and the casino used to be in there.

As for that building with the addition on top, that's the Morse's Tea building, and I'm pretty sure that addition was done a loong time ago.

The addition is probably about 100 years old. The building is also known as the Jerusalem Warehouse and the bottom four floors were constructed in 1840 or so.

but you make it look great!
i have to say though..some of the newer low rise "faux old" buildings meant to blend in with their surroundings just look sad and cheap.
preservationists shd. take a good hard look at what they have "achieved". they are clearly compromise buildings...no guts, no gusto.
but halifax's legitimate older architecture is stunning.

I'm surprised to see this thread brought to life again. Anyway, Halifax is a great city, one of my favorite cities to visit. Seems like everytime I try lately, something goes wrong at the last minute, but I'm still hoping to get back there soon, and maybe, if all goes well, reaching some of the areas I missed.

Faux-historic = True crap from any example I've seen, unfortunately.
