So we are told that New Orleans should not exist b/c we get hit by hurricanes every 40 odd years, Why on Earth was this place settled?!?...and, then, we have California that gets hit by wildfires EVERY year. This year it has started earlier than normal and we already have people fleeing like madmen, tonight. Wow....now, why on Earth should New Orleans exist and why on Earth should we live here? Well, I have the same question for the 30+ million that live in California. Shouldn't California be closed down and abandoned due to these wildfires and, of course, the Earthquakes that could strike at any time? I think I already know the answer....I happily live in New Orleans and have plans to go nowhere. Now, if I was in California?!?........................

Not really....Just wondering why so many people knocked New Orleans when we got hit by a hurricane, when it is clear to all that the place to live that is most prone to natural disasters is, indeed, California. I love California and visit often, but, I've been laughing for a year and a half at those that said this (New Orleans) was a stupid place to live.

To be fair, the wildfires and mudslides are really only a problem in the hills.

Earthquakes can strike at any time, but not just in california. The midwest can have earthquakes too. Big ones.

Of the 32 out of my 38 years I have been in California I have experienced only 2 earthquakes..... neither greater than a 4.1. They each actually felt like a heavy truck driving by.

I'll prefer earthquakes any day of the week, month or year than a pending disastrous storm... and in an area that is constantly being reclaimed by the sea.

Of my 38 years in New Orleans, Louisiana (born here), I've experienced one hurricane and it's name was Katrina.

Alon, are you just trying to start trouble. Does it really matter?

It's really silly when people say things like "so many people knocked New Orleans for the hurricane" but imply that they are okay with the natural disasters in California. Everybody has an opinion about every natural disaster in America and most regions do have some kind of natural disasters, whether it is tornadoes in the midwest, earthquakes in the west, hurricanes in the south and southeast not to mention wildfires, floods, mudslides, snow storms etc. Heck, here in Sacramento the big debate is about flooding and whether development should continue in flood prone parts of the city. Sac is considered one of the largest cities in the US vulnerable to a New Orleans style flooding... yet more people move here every year.

People make choices. People have opinions. People are thankful for not living in those areas when those other natural disasters take place even if they have their own natural disaster waiting to happen anytime. In Calif, we say earthquakes occurs every once in a while but hurricanes, tornadoes, snow storms etc occur every year elsewhere. Mudslides and wildfires really affect people that live in the hills and not most urban cores.

By the way, the largest non-Alaska earthquake in America occured in the state of Missouri not California.

I'm talking with the Californians....I'm making a point. Not saying that Californians said it themselves, but, I'm making a point, which I'm entitled to do. I love California...I ski there, shop there, vacation there, etc

i can't believe a person of 38 plus years is still troubled with such puerile
thoughts... or are you still bitter we won't save your state's wetlands?

I could give a rats ass about the Big One, I just hope I'm not stuck underneath a freeway overpass when it strikes. At the same time, I'm not going to let the fear of a major earthquake striking prevent me from doing my day-to-day routines here in California.

This is what really cracks me up...Californians claim to be so environmentally conscious, but, when it comes to putting the money where the mouth is, the only thing that Californians care about is tall redwood trees. They care about nothing else, but, tend to make everything environmental political. It's pretty cheap, but, we know how it really is. If you don't care about our wetlands, than that is fine...you probably don't eat seafood anyway, but, I'm sure you drive a car. When your gas is $15.00 a gallon in the next decade, I have a feeling you will suddenly really care about Louisiana's wetlands. But, of course, you could likely still be a part of the marijuana group that marches in Berkeley to stay stoned and scream vulgarities at television cameras concerning tall redwood trees.....

LOL...I tried alligator once...it isn't really to my liking. It's not terrible, but, the fact that it is alligator sorta freaks me out. One thing that IS good is alligator sausage. By itself, alligator tastes like chicken...but a little rubbery.
Here's your Louisiana alligator on a plate.....

Everyone who is not from California always exaggerates when it comes to natural disasters. i live in sacramento and there has never been an earthquake, which people from other states seem to think happen every week. When there is a fire it's in the hills and rarely does a person die because no one really lives there. I would no doubt live in California then new Orleans because no natural disaster in California has never destroyed a city like it has your's, and killed so many people. And many many people from this state donated money to your state so you should learn how to appreciate things a little more. You must be really jealous because no one here is even thinging about you guys but yet you seem to be stuck on us.

Oh, I know what California did and we appreciate it and we understand the magnitude of our natural event. In defense of the area, a Katrina-like event has never occurred in the recorded 308 year history of New Orleans. But, it did happen. I'm not jealous of California. That's silly. Listen, half the state of California comes to New Orleans for our annual Jazz Fest in late Spring and the citizens of California are always a total BLAST!!!

alon504, if you've got a beef with someone then take it up with that person and keep it off the forum. This thread is just trolling. Do not ever start a thread up like this on this forum again.
