Ok today was a nice day and decided to go out and take lots of photos of this most talk about neighborhood in NYC. I walk alot and try to cover most of the neighborhood. So please enjoy my pics! :)

Mott Haven, The Bronx:

Mott Haven is a neighborhood of Bronx.

The community was named for Jordan Mott, who built an iron works here in 1828.

Elevation is 36 feet.

Bounded by East 149th Street, Saint Mary's Park, the Harlem River and the East River.

Piano manufacturing was an important industry from the late 1800s to the 1940s

http://www.epodunk.com/cgi-bin/genInfo.php?locIndex=1208

Mott Haven was the first neighborhood to give rise to the term "South Bronx". In the 1940s when the Bronx was usually divided into the East Bronx and West Bronx, a group of social workers identified a pocket of poverty in Mott Haven and called it the South Bronx. This pocket of poverty greatly expanded northward, following the post-war phenomenon colloquially referred to as white flight, reaching a peak in the 1970s when the North Bronx-South Bronx boundary reached Fordham Road. Today the North Bronx-South Bronx distinction remains more common than the traditional East Bronx-West Bronx distinction, and some still regard Fordham Road as the boundary.

Some pretty good looking blocks in there. I think a lot of folks start shaking as soon as they hear "South Bronx". Ain't all bad. Thanks for sharing your walk with us Jularc.

Great stroll thru the Bronx. Thanks for taking us along! I haven't been up in the Bronx for about a year now. It's so easy to forget that there is a whole other huge part of the city that exists. The urban vastness of NYC is unparalled in my experience. Thanks for the cool pics... there are some classic NYC scenes in there.

It is just amazing how much pedestrian traffic there is and vibrancy outside of Manhattan.

I know. There is just so much to do in NYC that other interesting areas of the city are easily overlooked.

Did you guys also notice that there is not alot of garbage on the sidewalks. Even though you can see many people walking on them. That is a NYC myth that the sidewalks and streets (especially in the South Bronx) are usually full of garbage.

Really? When did you come and did you just came for a visit?

I want to say it was either last year or the year before (it was with Paradox21 and Segun, though Segun went to Queens). I really enjoyed the area and yes, I just came to visit. Here are some photos of The Hub I took...

Jularc - thanks for the pics.
I am not sure I have ever been there.
I need to -- I tend to get in a "south of 14th street rut" (though I did ride my bike up the westside pathway up to 56th this lovely evening...this doesn't "count", though!)
Thanks! :)

Fantastic thread. There's so much in this city- particularly the Bronx- that I'm just clueless about. I should really head out to my old Queens haunts and give a good tour, but I always find some stupid excuse not to.
Anyway, I love it.

You wont find Starbucks or stockbrokers or 20 million dollar penthouse apartments on this side of Manhattan. I love the reality of the Bronx. It reminds me of parts of LA.

Great photos.

But what in the world is a McDonalds Express?! I didnt know you could get more "express" than a regular McDonalds.

Excellent, I applaud when folk represent in terms of imagery other portions of NYC, that the non local never seen or is curious about. A standing ovation -

Really not much different from any other neighborhood. There are some nice folks living there, too.

Great pics!! Those pics of old Bx make me drool. To me, Mott Haven is best known for the coach yard the New York Central rr built. Any pix with railroad stuff in them?
