These pics were taken back in the mid 90's, and the most of them were taken early in the morning. Please excuse the poor quality, they were not only taken with a cheap camera, but early morning while the light and shadow was kind of bad. Plus they came out a little grainy when I increased the size.

The landlord of the red house also owned this building across the street, and the manager lived in a basement apartment. We were originally going to rent in this building, but we didn't want to live somewhere that had a murphy bed.

I know these aren't of the greatest quality, taken by a pro, or photoshoped to death, but they are real non the less. I hope someone at least finds them interesting if nothing else.

Mid '90s or mid-'70's??? Did you see all those hoopties?! That neighborhood oozes soul. Please say those bombed out buildings have since been rehabbed.

^I thought of the 70s too. Working class hood I'm guessing.

There was a recent piece on America's Most Wanted about a little girl missing from that area. Her body was found some days later. Sad stuff, and I hope the killer is found before he can harm anyone else. Sorry for getting off on a tangent.

Totally rehabbed, including the long apartment building and storefronts adjoined behind it, and a couple of more buildings around that intersection.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/130/419539596_feeb40ad50_o.jpg

As you see, this was a first attempt at cleaning it up a couple of years after the first pic was taken.

Sad to say that this was razed, and the gas station on the corner extended their parking lot on what used to be this building. My cousin met with the owner and was going to buy it and fix it up, but he backed out when he found out it was ate up in back taxes. I remember them removing the bricks sometime around the Stanley Cup finals. The Wings lost to New Jersey close to the time the building came down. Two blows in one.

I'm not sure how I ended up with the photo, but I'm glad I did. And thanks, I know the quality is poor compared to other peoples pics. And yes, this was the 90's, 94 to be exact.

the graininess and the "rawness" of these photos perfectly capture the essence of the neighborhood.

Southwest Detroit has some gritty areas (especially Delray and North Corktown). However, the hispanic community has done wonders to the Vernor Hwy retail corridor and a lot of the neighborhoods are seeing their fair share of gentrification, such as Hubbard Farms, Woodbridge, and Corktown. The Springwells neighborhood is probably the most intact working-class neighborhood in the city and Mexicantown has some of the best Mexican restaurants and bakeries in the Midwest. The closer you get to Woodmere Cemetary the nicer the housing gets. Granted crime and drugs are still major problems in this area as it is in most other Detroit neighborhoods. But as more new developments occur and the hispanic population continues to grow, Southwest Detroit will definitely become even more vibrant than it already is.

Here are a few pics I've taken over the last few years if you don't mind me posting them. There's nearly 60 in total, but it shows the different neighborhoods throughout Southwest Detroit.

Officially there's only about 50,000 hispanics living in Detroit, with virtually all of them living in Southwest Detroit. I wouldn't doubt that number is much higher.

The DRIC proposal for a new downriver bridge will affect this area east of Green and south of I 75. But most of what you shot will be unaffected.

The Ambassador Bridge company is looking to build a new six lane bridge next to the old one. That might have been the one you saw.

There is a lot of new and renovated housing in the area around St. Anne near the Ambassador Bridge. The neighborhood was pretty barren a few years ago, but now there is tons of new housing, not to mention lots of new business along Bagley street. One recent addition (I don't have any pictures) is the new Mexicantown Welcome Center and Mercado (or whatever it's called) in that neighborhood.
