Hey, I've been wondering if any people out there have any renderings of the old cancelled calgary projects back in the 80's? There's a lot of new people in the forum who would love to see the old drawings of FCII and the second Canterra tower...

Hi, I guess you are new enough here that you may have missed some of the so-called "end of thread" parties that we have every 2000 or so posts (though, honestly, a lot of regular forumers miss those as well). One of these parties contained a bunch of renderings.
I'll repost what I have:

Was that supposed to be built as another tower altogether or was FCII a secondary tower to the taller one? Because now the word seems to be that FCII will be a whole new plaza...
Thanks for the postings...

It was going to be a taller twin to the already existing tower at 3rd Street and 7th Avenue (you can see it in the rendering). It was partially built and cancelled (the planters in the plaza that exist right now are actually the tops of the foundations). The new design for the tower should be coming out sometime soon.
The rendering is looking West if you are a little disoriented...

Thanks for those pics Boris, what a taller skyline we would have. But then again we wouldn't have this opportunity now to put architecturally superior buildings ie:The Bow, FCCII. My favourite one in the last grouping would have to be the Eaton Centre, a very imposing tower but classy. The TD tower that is there now is very nice and one of my favourites, but the original looked to be quite taller.

I think that twin project was somethign along the lines of "park centre" or somethign like that. I really like it too tho. It was supposed to go whter TCPL is right now. That woudl have made for a couple of really tall ones (petro and this one) I also really liked the eaton centre design. I'd be very impressed if someone found:
1) The Trizec proposal for the east empty lot east of the Inernational Hotel. It was from ~1990 and was ~30 stories.
2) The hotel proposal for the current site of Centrium. The developer was from Vancouver and proposed a building of ~30 stories with a curved glass facade.
3) The never built second tower of the Western Gas complex. It would have been on the west side of Eaton's covering what is now a parking lot and CityTV.

As far as the architectual aspect of each building is debateable, but overall they're still more impressive than anything going up now!! Taller slender buildings is an architectual style. Those buildings even if only 3 were built would do more for the skyline than any of the newer proposals, with the exception of Encana's project! IMO!
