View Full Version : Saint John: Oblique Aerial Photos (from 2005)

In honour of Saint John still being New Brunswick's largest city (that's right, I said it :P ), and in the hopes of much new growth to come, I present some of the aerials from my work as a watercourse management planner. As the title suggests, they are a bit old, but I figured that wouldn't matter because they really portray some nice angles on a beautiful [non foggy] day on the Bay of Fundy (near low tide of course).

I encourage you to look toward the horizon on these images, you can see very far away in some of the photos, including out to the Kennebecasis Valley, Kingston Peninsula, Long Island, Grand Bay-Westfield, and maybe even Nova Scotia...

ENJOY!

Fantasic shots - especially the one of Partridge Island looking back over the city. However, I'm a bit confused by one of the photo labels. Blackall Lake? What happened to Tyner?

Beautiful pics !!

The water is really dirty :(

kwajo

Don't forget, most of what looks like dirt in the water is sediment washing down from the Saint John river or Marsh Creek, and in the case of Courtenay Bay it is sediment stirred up from the mud flats. The sewage isn't really visible in any of the pictures, even if we all know it is there. Thank god Harbour Cleanup is right around the corner, it will mean big things for Saint John.

In honour of Saint John still being New Brunswick's largest city

lol yes and Prince George (BC), Chilliwack (BC), Red Deer (Alta), and yes even Maple Ridge (BC) are all larger cities than Saint John, also of note Winnipeg is a larger city than Vancouver.

Besides that....great post, Saint John is a beautiful city, Downtown is amazing, albeit very difficult to navigate by car, but still amazing lol

"Loch Lomond"

I guess there is something Thunder Bay has in common with Saint John. :P

It's very nice, but better at street level. :)

oh yea and whitby ontario is a bigger city than thunder bay too...just so ya know vid

You don't have to shove it in. :) Whitby isn't a stand alone "metropolis" in the middle of 400,000sqkm of hinterland, is it?

nope actually its a suburb

a better example is Coquitlam BC

but on a happier note Thunder Bay is a bigger city than St. Johns and also Kelowna

vid

Well there you go. As a suburb, it is not self sufficient. Thunder Bay, for the most part, is.

Not unlike Saint John, no?

Yes Saint John is quite self sufficent

It's also very nice. The city itself is beautiful. The natural surrounding would be at par, whichever one is better would be down to preference, they're almost identical really except we have more pine trees.

quite true....personally i like deciduous trees better, less acidic

...before you go thinking im a thunder bay hater I thought you should know that I also realize that Thunder Bay is a bigger city than St. Johns and also Kelowna...in case you missed my edit

I saw the edit. Saint John just slid past Thunder Bay. If forestry hadn't taken such a hit the past two years, we wouldn't have. Almost all of our growth is people from dying communities up north moving into "town."

Do people around Saint John refer to it as "town"? :) I know most Newfies call St John's "town". :P

Getting around downtown Saint John on foot is the way to go. It's such a beautiful city at street level. Is there a big historic preservation group there?

You have the most raging inferiority complex that I've ever seen on the forums. You'd think it would be hard to put vid to shame in that regard, but Jesus God almighty you're dedicated. Comparing Saint John to BC suburbs because the populations are similar makes you look like an insecure weasel with nothing better to do than to irrelevantly point out a bunch of no name places to make yourself feel slightly less shitty about being from a downtown built around a giant stretch of parking lot which is second to the city you're picking on and your reason for making a comment in the first place.

Saint John has a reputation for being a dirty industrial town but maybe that's out of date. Many industries don't pollute that noticeably. Some industrial buildings are kind of ugly but people talk as if breathing the air in cities like Saint John or Hamilton will kill you in five minutes, which is kind of silly.

I think the geographic layout of the city is an asset, since there is a well-defined core area that can be improved. It does look a little run down though. Whenever I see pictures of Saint John I think of other cities in Canada (which shall remain nameless) that have seen tons of investment and heritage preservation and are touted as historic tourist destinations but don't have half as much history.

It's been a long time since I've been to Saint John but it does have a very distinct odor. Hehe. I can't even remember if it was pleasant or offensive, but it was distinct.

It's the same tactic people use to put down the Maritime provinces by comparing NS to Ottawa-Gatineau or PEI to Thunder Bay or Markham...you get my point. Unfortunately, it seems to have been inherited by Maritimers somewhat when talking about other Maritime cities.

From the last few times I was in Saint John, it seems to be getting progressively better. A lot of people don't understand why I actually like the city, but I get that a lot with other cities too.

One of the reasons I love Saint John is for it's gritty, industrial ambiance. It makes me want to shine someone's shoes.

Fantastic collection of images....

Many people i talk to about Saint John (who have little/no 1st hand knowledge of the are) are a little shocked to see photos like these which dont completely jive with their preconceived notions of a heavily industrialized city for its size...especially the proximity of the city to the major river systems and the diverse geography (islands, small cliffs, rolling hills, river valley)

Thanks!
