Many if not most of us drink what passes for coffee at Tim Hortons. Currently the annual roll-up-the-rim-to-lose (well, at least you get your hands to smell like coffee) game is on.
Have any of you won something better than a food product (coffee/donut/muffin/bagel...of which there are apparently 30 million up for grabs)?
The other prizes are:
30 Hybrid Toyota Camrys
100 Viera Plasma Panasonic TVs
500 cash prizes of $1000
10,000 iPod Nano players
What do you think of this contest? Are you more likely to patronize Tim Hortons on account of the contest?
Remember the brou-haha last year in Quebec with the disputed car ownership (children finding the winning 'cup' in a garbage can)?
As for me, I've rolled up the rim and lost 19 times out of 22. Guess the odds are not so bad...but I've only won coffees.

One year I won a muffin but then accidentally through the damn cup in the trash.
This roll-up season I've had two of their coffees...both cups were defective.

I hate this damn campaign. Every year I must go through at least 50-60 of these damn things, some years I win NOTHING. This year has been the best yet, and I have won one measly donut on about 20 cups... It's a shame and rolling up the damn rims is SOooooooooooo annoying

I seem to have pretty good luck with donuts and muffins but I rarely claim my prizes. Unfortunately I have never won a plasma TV or $60,000 vehicle.
I don't really drink coffee so these wins come from one or two annual hot chocolates.
Fucking alveolar trill..
I can make an uvular trill and a retroflex approximant, but an alveolar trill? Give me a break!
My usual r sound, due to a disability, is an Alveolar approximant, which results in the occasional, comical, "wesidual" or "westwoom". :)

My coworker brought in Tim's one morning this week and set the coffee on my desk, stating that if I won, I had to give the prize to him. I said "sure", but immediately had this sinking feeling that it could be a car or ipod or tv.
Luckily it was only another shitty coffee.

Do the cups have serial numbers?

My physics teacher won a BBQ last year. She can't use it in her condo so it's been sitting in her storage locker since then. She's been saving it until she buys a house (she's prego right now so the house is likely coming soon)

Rimroller™
See below for product details.
This is a product that really needs a lot of explanation, not because it's mysterious in function or even difficult to use (quite the opposite), but to explain what it's doing in our stores!
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door." Unfortunately, Ralph apparently wasn't writing from personal experience when he penned that quote, as one of the most difficult challenges an inventor can face is bringing a finished design to market.
When we were first shown the Rimroller many months ago, we recognized immediately that this was an elegant, well-designed, and well-manufactured product at a very reasonable price. It was one of those products that just delighted people when they used it. We also recognized that the inventor, Paul Kind, had plowed a ton of time and capital into bringing the product to the point where it was ready to market. So, while Lee Valley is clearly not the most appropriate retailer of this product, we could only stand by for so long watching Mr. Kind work hard to sell this product without success.
It's important to support domestic manufacturing, cultivate innovation, and reward entrepreneurship if we're to avoid becoming a nation of employees.
For an inventor, the successful marketing of a proprietary design isn't always about the revenue; it's often more about the external validation one gets from each sale. Each sale is the business equivalent of applause, and we think Mr. Kind deserves a standing ovation.
Hopefully we won't have to be selling the product for long …
Cheers,
Robin C. Lee
President
This is an easy-to-use product. Essentially a curved clip with two integral (covered) blades, it slices the cup rim twice (1-1/8" apart) when pushed down, and an internal lip unrolls the paper edge when it’s pulled up. Push, pull and you’re done. 2" high, 1-1/2" wide, with an attached split-ring.
Invented and manufactured in Ottawa, Canada.

I bought a hot chocolate (I don't drink coffee, but I'll tolerate a hot chocolate when its really cold out) the first day and went 4 days after that without paying for another. Since then I've won a donut and thats it.
Last year I probably won close to 30 drinks, nothing larger though.

Same. The closest ones are a mile in either direction. It's easier to take the bus to Grinders or that-little-yellow-one-on-Bay-street-I-don't-know-the-name-of.

funy i just finished my coffee from tim hortons and as i was reading this thread i decided to roll up the rim...what do you know i won a donut, infact that is the frirst thing i ever won from tim hortons but after i finish typing this im going to take the cup and toss it since its not exactly worth lugging a empty cup around for a free donut.
by the way i just remebered hearing several years ago that mc donalds got fined for not shiping enough of their wining monopoly stickers up to canada so aperently the odds of wining anything up here were extremly low and way below their advertised odds. you would of had to been in the states for any real chance of wining.
sometimes i wonder how tim hortons distributes their wining cups...it would be interesting to see what the odds of wining are for people from different parts of the country. so far mine are around 1 in 30 or so and thats in vancouver, i must add that i forget to roll up the rim on most of the cups but i must of rolled up atleast 30 to win a lousy donut.

After about 15 purchases, I've won a coffee and 2 donuts. Winning once every 5 purchases isnt too bad.
A friend who purchases the same amount of coffees has won 5 times (once every 3 purchases).
In all the Roll up the Rim promotions, I havent met anyone who's won anything more than coffee/donuts.

My dream marketing opportunity is to do a similar promo with condoms. You roll up the rim, and winning condoms say "you're a wiener"!

Robin's is doing Sip to Win, and they started a few weeks before Tims, I believe. In about 40 coffees, I've won a two donuts and a coffee.

At least this type of promotion is straightforward and transparent. The one that bugs me is when McDonald's does their Monopoly, with "millions" "to be won". You collect a series of game pieces, and there are only a few, or one of the rare one released. Now, what are the chances of the recipient of that rare one knowing that he has a winning gamepiece? It says nothing on it to indicate it is special, and there is a VERY good chance the recipient will throw it in the garbage. I wonder how many of the "millions to be won" were actually "won".

Its a joke. Everytime you went there you would get the same two pieces and never the "rare" ones. Its a scam.

McDonald's Monopoly Game scandal
The McDonald's Monopoly scandal in the U.S. resulted from the revelation in 2001 that an employee of Simon Marketing, the promotion company that had been responsible for administering McDonald's contests, had actually been using proxies who were given the winning contest tickets and claiming the prizes instead of ensuring that the pieces were distributed to the general public. The fraud was perpetrated without McDonald's knowledge, but McDonald's voluntarily offered to pay out new contest prizes to its customers to compensate for the prizes misappropriated by the promotion company. It also appears that only one key employee of the promotion company, and not its management, perpetrated the fraud. Despite the name, the fraud was perpetrated with all of McDonald's contests, and not just the popular one based on the game of Monopoly. It is believed that about $13 million (U.S.) was embezzled in this manner from 1995 to 2001.
Yes it was a scam for a long time, there realy was no chance for any regular person to win the grand prizes.

Apr 2, 2007, 2:44 AM
^^^^ LOL! I am not even remotely shocked by that. It was just the WORST contest imaginable.. had this guy not "cheated", the prizes "available" would probably never be given out. That type of contest should be outlawed... if a prize is offered, it should not just be "available", it should be guaranteed to be won, and given away.
someone123
Apr 2, 2007, 3:23 AM
Contests like that are very common.
Radio stations will have contests where you can call in to have a "chance" to win $100,000 or whatever but the odds are astronomical so in practice they never actually pay much out.
The do that elsewhere? I thought it was some evil thing Dougall Media came up with to torture us further.
"Lets gather one thousand people at the mall, tell them they'll win a hundred grand and them make the challenge so ridiculously challenging no one wins!! We're make millions!!!!"
Lousy bastards.
