OKay, so obviously there is a shortage of knowledge about Moncton in this country...its time you people learn about the 29th largest city in the country!
Demographics:
Moncton is the Largest CMA in the province of New Brunswick:
Moncton (CMA) 2006 - 126,424 (6.5%) (rank 29th)
It is also the largest UA in the province:
Moncton (UA) 2006 - 97,065 (7.3%) (rank 30th)
It is also the center of the largest Economic Region in the province
Moncton (ER) 2006 - 191,860 (4.9)
In the period between 2001-2006 the city was tied for 10th for largest CMA growth in the country (with Vancouver) Moncton was the only CMA in Atlantic Canada to exceed the national growth rate, and it was also the fastest growing city east of Toronto.
Other Interesting info about the city:
The city was the first city in Canada to have "official billingual" status, we have the heighest rate of billinguallism in the country, the ratio of english to french mother tounge in Moncton is 65 E - 25 F no city in the country even approches those numbers.
In 2006 the city hosted the CHL Memorial Cup, In 2007 the city will host the Canadian University Sport hocky championchip, In 2010 Moncton will host the IAAF World Junior Championships, The event will involve more than 2,000 athletes from 170 countries, making it the largest sporting event ever held in Atlantic Canada.
In 2005 the Rolling Stones played in front of a crowd of over 85,000 in moncton, making it the largest concert in Atlantic Canadian history. In 2006 the city held a massive country concert which had about 45,000 spectators, it was the largest concert in 2006 for Atlantic Canada.
The Moncton International Airport was the first international airport in NB (the other is in Fredericton) it services more than 560,000 passengers a year, more than all the other airports in NB combined.
Moncton was selected by Canadian Business Mag. as "The Top City In Canada To Do Business In" (2004)
Moncton is home to a nationally recognized brewery "The Pumphouse Brewery". They won the "Canadian Brewery of the Year" award in 2005, also Molson is in the final stages of completion of thier new brewery in Moncton...thier first new brewery in more than 50 years.
OK enough info heres the pics lol:

I didn't know that Moncton had a deportation monument. There's also one here and I would imagine that they made one for Grand Pré and maybe some other places. They were erected for the 250th anniversary of the deportation, which occurred in 1755. Moncton was one of the areas where the Acadians lived in the early-mid 1700s, although I believe they were rounded up and deported, possibly by Monckton. Some people who live there aren't very happy about the name.
The big drawback of Moncton is that its building stock is not even remotely in the range of some other cities around the region. Saint John, on the other hand, was a major city in the Victorian era and has a large number of exceptional buildings.
New Brunswick has suffered due to attempts to spread development between three cities. As a result, each city is missing something. Moncton has ended up with the growth but not the history and culture. The Maritimes as a whole have suffered from the same problem.
This is the first time I've even seen pictures of Moncton, thanks!

Very true lol good ol Monkton...what a guy NOT, oh well its a cool name still. yeah that monument is new.
What you said about the history is very true, Saint John, in comparison to moncton has almost twice as many buildings over 8 stories, yet there are now more than 4,000 more people in moncton compared to saint john...it doesnt add up...sadly someareas of the province will soon remain only is history books, but this rural to urban treand is a necessary one, and NB is far behind the rest of the country in this respect (with the exception of PEI) lol

we are proud because we turned a city which most people thought would die out in the 80s into the fastest growing city east of toronto, and the largest urban area in NB within 10 years.
If Saint John finally pulls itself out of its current hole (most likely it will) you will see the same pride there.

Hey whatever happened to your hockey team?
Moncton used to be the farm team for the Winnipeg Jets, and now the Manitoba Moose are the farm team for the Canucks.
Did Moncton become a farm team's farm team? I'm not really sure if the Moose have a farm team.
Just curious..

This year so far they are tied for 3rd in the east division
As far as what team they are a farm team for I have no idea lol

Actually it was only by going to Jets games that I learned where Moncton is.
I remember being young, and going to the washroom in the old barn and all the old drunks were pissing all over the floor screaming "Send that F*cker back to Moncton, he cost us the game!?!"
Its strange what you remember from being a child.

Seems every 'compliment' you make about Saint John is followed with a comparison to Moncton in its favour. This is annoying. Yes, poor Saint John, stuck with only being a charming old city. They could have been the ones ever so slightly outshining the other small poor cities around them, but that's Moncton's joy I guess.

I'm 24...When the Jets left I was about 13 or 14.
Wish they were still around, i'm sure it would be a different experience to be one of those rowdy drunks.
Some nights there were more fights in the second deck than there were on the ice.
I remember the police regularly visiting our section and pulling guys away.

A couple years younger; no big diff.
I remeber those days too. I also remember getting cheap tickets at 7-11, and those t-shirts of the Flames, Oilers and Jets.
Ahhh, the good old days of bygone yesteryear. :slob:

The Moncton Hawks were in the AHL. Before the QMJHL expanded eastward, every city of consequence in Atlantic Canada had an AHL team. There were also the Fredericton Canadiens, Saint John Flames, PEI Senators, Cape Breton Oilers and St. John's Maple Leafs (guess who all their parent clubs were!). There were also the Halifax Citadels, who were with the Quebec Nordiques.
The CHL is a junior league, not a farm system like the AHL.

It's a one-way rivalry. People in Moncton seem a lot more obsessed with Halifax than the other way around.

Well it seems everytime someone posts pics or info on Moncton on this site everybody from Halifax or Sain John has to chime in on how they dont like Moncton or how it doesnt look urban enough. So who looks obsessed with what city again. Its to bad people cant stick to the topic. People for Sain John are going to try and prove their city is the best, people from Halifax are going to try and prove their city is the best, and people from Moncton are going to do the same deal with it.

Have you been to the Atlantic Canada forum? Moncton was barely mentioned until Stu arrived posting about its superiority in every thread that had nothing to do with Moncton. Go read the Saint John construction thread, he derailed it into SJ vs Moncton like three times.
If people from Moncton are going to try and claim their city is the best in the region, that's cute, but annoying.

Not to continue to derail this post nor point anyone out, but I remember the exact thing Elevator-guy is talking about happening the first time I posted Moncton, though not as much the second time. Anyway, it's a disease that's contagious it seems. I try to stick up for every city in the Maritimes, since as of last year I have officially visited and photographed them all. However, I also succumb to this sometimes and I'm also a very rare breed, even among small city lovers (I'm sure there'll be no arguments there, lol) and I'm not trying to act "holier than thou". Just a small fyi, in case you don't already know this, I'm originally from Sydney and live now in Fredericton, so I have no vested interest in Moncton vs any other city mentioned. It's not a bad thing to realise the negatives of a city (every city has them) as long as you credit the good things and don't start "waving phallouses" to paraphrase (and are aware of the negatives of your own city).
Anyway, back to the topic, great thread, Matt. It would actually be nice to have similar threads about a lot of places with their hidden charms (I definitely call the older buildings along Main St. in Moncton hidden charms). Like I said, I love small cities and would love locals in these places to do more of what you're doing (without the city vs city, which I'll give credit was much worse before, that's gotten you a reputation amongst fellow forumers).
The short and without parenthetical expressions version: Good work Matt, I'd love to see more about other cities, small and large, from the "locals".
