i'm finally getting around to posting the scraps left over from my europe series.

Malaga and Fuengirola

malaga is the hub of the costa del sol, a long stretch of suburbs and resort towns on the coast of andalucia. about half a million people live in malaga itself and it is off the beaten path for most tourists, despite having a gorgeous downtown area, a moorish fortress and a beach of its own.

about one million people live in malaga's metropolitan area, which includes the city of fuengirola, where we stayed for a week.

Málaga looks very beautiful even though it has a reputation for being rundown. It seems like a town that gets overlooked in favor of the nearby resorts. I'm going to Spain this summer, and Barcelona has been knocked off my itinerary. After looking at this thread, I'm thinking Málaga will have to take its place as I'll be in Andalucia.

The other week, I was trying to track down your Madrid threads as I am planning to spend a few days there too, but it seems that Café l'Urbanité is down. Is that permanent? (The blog is sweet though, I check it often.)

ronda is nice but it's a small town in the middle of nowhere. i would opt for malaga.

there's a problem with the forum and i haven't been able to fix it. i might have to completely re-install the thing (although all of the user and post data is safe). it's pretty moribund so i might change to another approach.

I finally get to tell you, Kilgore Trout, how much I appreciate this European photo series. I've been visiting Skyscraper Page for probably two years and only joined last month. Of all the posts I've ever seen on here (or skyscrapercity) your European threads were my favorite. I can honestly tell you that I have been waiting for these photos since your original posts back in like August. I went to Europe back in July as part of a high school spanish trip (in which I to went to London, Paris, Madrid, and Lisbon [I have yet to get to Rome - although your pictures portrayed it so well I felt like I was there]) and fell in love with the place, no pictures I've come across capture the mood, atmosphere, distinct culture, people, ect. in each of these cities like the ones in your posts. I've visited urbanphoto.net multiple times just to relive these great cities while I wait to eventually get back to them. The photo series is fricking brilliant (a 100 out of 10), publish it, that's all I can say. I'll end my praise here, but there's nothing I appreciate more than a good portrait of a city and you have done one hell of a job with each of these! :cheers:

I changed my post, but thanks for the advice. I've been intrigued by Ronda from having recently read Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls. But you're probably right, Málaga looks more worthy of a visit. It would probably be my only chance to stray from the tourist circuit.

Hi!, nice pics!, I live there, the beach and promenade pics are from Fuengirola, exactly from the beach I go to almost everyday in summer, the pics are a bit dark because it was late in the evening and the beach faces southeast, I could be somewhere in this pic coming back home after the beach!

i was pretty impressed with fuengirola. i expected it to be a tacky beach resort without substance but it actually had some decent neighbourhoods, especially that area over the highway right next to el conte inglès.

there's a rail link between malaga and fuengirola, right?

I'm glad you like it!, and yes, that train is called "cercanias", it goes from Fuengirola center to Malaga center in 45 minutes and there's a train every 30 minutes (20 minutes when some construction finish), it's got many stations between them (Torremolinos, Benalmádena), one of them is in Los Boliches, it is 150 metres inland from that white and yelow hotel in this pic:
