Southwest Shopping District (南西商圈) is a popular shopping destination in Taipei. It is serviced by Taipei Metro's Red Line (淡水線). The area has several major department stores, and it is not far from one of Taipei's major financial districts. It's also close to Zhongshan North Road (中山北路), where the Grand Formosa Regent - Four Seasons (晶華酒店) and other hotels are located. Interestingly, the area is patronized primarily by OL (office ladies) and female japanese tourists.

Shin Kong Mitsukoshi 新光三越
It's Taiwan's first Mitsukoshi. It's also one of the first department stores in the district. Its mantra is "Fine Living." Even though it targets OL, it has one of the most famous Male Fashion sections in Taipei.

Idee 衣蝶
It is a department store designed for women. Its products do not overlap greatly with those from Mitsukoshi, even though they both target OL patrons.

It is a sports-and-travel themed department store. Its design and products are in sync with a more leisurely lifestyle. As such, it mainly attracts young people.

That's a interesting observation. It's an old part of town, and there are quite a few often badly maintained old japanese colonial-era buildings nearby, and a lot of the alleyways are very narrow and straight, and look distinctly japanese.

it's short for "office lady."
it's a japanese expression that is also used in taiwan.

the japanese like using english terms for stuffs like this. they call the white collar working women OL, and they call the men "salaryman." :shrug:
