View Full Version : Future Edmonton Skyline

I liked the idea of a Calgary Future Skyline thread, so I thought Edmonton should have one. If anyone has a good skyline photo, maybe someone could photoshop some proposed, uc, or rumoured projects to see what the outcome would be. Just an idea for us Edmonton forumers.

I knew that I remembered seeing a Future Edmonton thread around here somewhere. :)

I've done up models of the Icon and Aurora to give some idea what they'll look like. The Icon should be pretty close, but the Aurora needed tons of guesswork and is probably way off.

AHAHAHA, knowing Edmonton, I don't think so!

The current developments won't change the traditional skyline shot from the south all that much but aurora, icons, and q will certainly have a dramatic effect on the view from the north.

@Shotime: The podium and setbacks are all just eye-balled off of the official renderings. The towers themselves should be pretty accurate though, because they're based off of the suite dimensions (although I got kindof lazy on the northwest elevation...but then again, so did the architect)

@johnnyc: That's how spread out it will be. There's another 8-storey midrise in there, and a 17 storey tower that's just across the street that I haven't done yet. But yeah, 6 towers over ~1.5 square blocks.

@IntoTheWest: Thanks. It all started because I was trying to find Murieta's in Calgary in Googleearth, and then suddenly the whole downtown started popping up around me. So thanks for the inspiration.

i think it is a very good site plan...as it will bring people who might not want "right downtown, tower to tower" type condos.

and west and east...

Yeah, I agree - being north of CN they will have a real impact lengthening the skyline from the west and east vistas - much like Arriva, Vetro, etc. is doing in Calgary. I didn't realize the Aurora towers were that tall (23-28), what is the expected timeline for this project?
Once again - good job, keep it up.

Btw, what software would be the best if one wanted to take on creating a 3-d model of future downtown Edmonton?

Kevin_foster
Apr 27, 2009, 5:10 PM
^ I would say google sketchup

You're not going to get professional grade renders or high poly models out of it, but that is not the point. I use sketchup all the time, and it has a relatively easy learning curve (www.google.com/sketchup)

All of the Edmonton 3d buildings featured in Google Earth have been done by Newfangled. Working with Google Earth and Sketchup is awesome.

With sketchup you can also get professional rendering software that renders your models so they are at least presentable... Ill provide some examples in a sec

Kevin_foster
Apr 27, 2009, 5:14 PM
For rendering... using sketchup 7 and IDX (free):

1) Before:
http://bayimg.com/image/eapahaabf.jpg

2) After:
http://bayimg.com/image/eapacaabf.jpg
http://bayimg.com/image/eapaeaabf.jpg

3) Conceptual:
http://bayimg.com/image/eapagaabf.jpg

there are also other programs out there (Blender3d (http://www.blender.org/) - which is a Free alternative to the very expensive 3dMax); etc.

Get Google Earth, fire it up, and make sure 3d buildings are on - you will see Newfangleds work there (quite impressive might I add)

SHOFEAR
Apr 27, 2009, 6:06 PM
Since it's being discussed, has anybody had to deal with any sort of BIM software like VICO?

The learning curve was very steep, but i would imagine it has capabilities far beyond whats being discussed here.
