An interesting detail…this glass will be set within a large panel of tyndal stone…
the glass has a frit pattern on it that replicates the pattern of tyndal stone

The glass on Hydro is sure being put in quickly. I wonder what the hold-up is with the Newport Centre, that building can't decide if it wants to live in the 70's or the 21st century.

Are you saying that the NEWPORT CENTER is actually planning on upgrading their siding??? That would be amazing, I absolutely hate how it looks, so worn out, faded, and just plain ugly. If they are throwing on a new and shimmering face I would be very pleased!

OH! VERY IMPRESSIVE........................blahhhhh
I can't believe they are going thru the trouble to redo the glass ( and its the SAME BLOODY STYLE ) I mean nothing new, not like this was a chance for a better upgrade, and as for the slowness, I do recall that when EDM refinished the TD bank they took their sweet time as well. I can only still hope they will do something to the white top and sides to make it seem a little more different!................. but that is only hoping.

I like the frit pattern... if nothing else, it's different, which is more than can be said for the fenestration of other downtown buildings. Should be a great building.

They are doing one side at a time. I believe each side cost is around $500,000.

Osborne and something. It's that small, three floor office building that somebody recently renovated with a plan to include an addition down the road. The renovation involved a new, snappy neo-modern front entrance.

Driving down Portage east bound, some time after passing Sherburn, you can really see how the Hydro Tower is going to fill up a gap in the skyline from the direction. Alas, it's not a view commonly, if ever depicted of downtown Winnipeg, but it is nonetheless one I see most days on my return home trip from work.

^ nice effect.
i am really excited about this building, it makes a big impact downtown. already you can see it from winnipeg sq., from portage and sherbrooke.. what it isn't in height it makes up for in width... it's massive.
i noticed there are signs up for leasing the ground floor retail already... mind you the signs are small metal street signs affixed to a fence, since the prov. gov't has no idea how to market retail space...
still hopefully some good retail will locate in there...
^ pretty sure the royal bank is moving from across the street...

I hope a few other upperend retailers move into the Hydro Building.. it would be nice to have a building, with a few nice shops. The bank won't hurt either.
I would also expect a flower shop, hair dresser and a news stand.

If Portage Place ever plopped another 8-10 storeys on top of itself for residential, I think that sector of Portage Avenue would look very, very attractive. Hudson's Bay Co., Portage Place mall with the residential tower, Newport Centre, and of course Manitoba Hydro. Nonetheless, it will still look great without the addition on top of Portage Place.
