View Full Version : In the name of Europe, I annex Quebec City!

SrbijaCG
Mar 29, 2007, 6:02 AM
The following photos were taken during my little weekend getaway to La Belle Province this past Christmas.

Being from Ontario and making my first trip to Montreal & Quebec City(I don't know why i've waited so long), I was shocked at the differences in practically everything - it was almost like going to another country. All the stories i have heard of Quebec City turned out to be true - it really is the most European city in North America.

Take a look...

Anyway, QC is really a gem.

Yes, Quebec is very European in appearance and perhaps the most European in North America, but I think Buenos Aires gives it a run for the money on the most European looking city in all the Americas.

Very nice architecture and look to QC. I hope the weather there is not typical to the pictures that were taken. It really looked gray, cold and rainy. The only way I could distinguish the night pictures from the day ones is because of the exterior lighting to the buildings and restaurants. Overall though it looks like a very charming city. Thanks for posting the pics SrbijaCG.

Nice pics, but not the most European city in North America. The buildings of Quebec are mostly in a very American vernacular. Take away the twee shops and a lot of those streets could be in small town PA.

Even though it's totally random (though the Irish flag in this first pic adds to the illusion), I think the streetscapes look more Irish than French!

there is nowhere in quebec that looks remotely european to me. quebec city and old montreal are distinctly american in their architecture. there are some cultural elements that feel more continental than what you might find in the rest of canada or the united states, but quebec really is a distinctly new world kind of place.

i can see what you mean, but given the age and preserved character of inner quebec, you could at least say that it represents an era in the development of the new world in which european influence - both globally and here - was more apparent.

yes, definitely. there's more french influence in the architecture than you see anywhere else in north america. but even then, most of old quebec, even the walled city, was built in the 19th century. in that sense i don't think it's any more "european" than beacon hill, back bay and the north end in boston.

there's also a number of buildings like the château frontenac that were designed to self-consciously evoke a tourist's vision of what "european" is.

Very good photos....

Bravo..

In fact, Quebec City is a mix of French, English, Irish and a little bite of Scottish town...

From 1608 to 1759, as been the French period...

From 1759 to 1867, as been the English period...

From 1867 to now...the Canadian period...

So Quebec City is the child of a French women maried whit a English man born and living in North America....

That's the point of view of a Quebec City citizen...

There's more to old Quebec than the bricks and stones that make up its buildings. The street and lot configurations, etc. also contribute a lot to the overall feel of these areas and they tend to be much older.

I do agree with you about the "Europeanness" though. It is trivially true that cities like Quebec (and Boston and wherever else) are European.

quebec city has no trouble sustaining itself. there's no shortage of people to fill its streets. in fact, some of quebec's neighbourhoods are easily as busy as those in much larger cities.

Les photos c'est magnifique! J'adore La Ville de Quebec!!

I think what you guys are getting at is thus...

Boston is "New England" in the same ways as Quebec city is "New France". That sums it up.

In any case, it sure does make a good North American oasis, though (for those not fortunate enough to live there).

It's pretty cheap to live in Quebec city, especially in Vieux-Québec. You'll pay around 600$-700$/month for a 2 bedroom appartment.

Great pics by the way.

No but neither can we just write off the rest of the city either! If a neighbourhood is located outside the 'Old City', does it make it any less 'Quebec'? Of course no! The 'Old City' represents less than 5% of the area within Quebec City proper...it's a beautiful district but it does not represent the entire city.

What I love so much about Quebec City is the building materials used to build the old buildings. The wooden support beams in some of those buildings are incredibly thick! It looks like the area was covered with old growth forest a long time ago.

Having returned from Europe, I can say that it looks nothing like it. Although it may feel like it. QC looks like what it is: an 19th century colonial city.

But what a thread, where has this been?

Well most city's downtowns (and the odd neighbourhoods that are usually near downtown) represent the entire city, like it or not. By your arguement, Vancouver, Edmonton, Regina and Montreal can't say they have a different feel because they all have suburbs that look alike even though the downtowns are completely different.

Much of the modern architecture truly squanders the potential for extraordinary beauty in Quebec City.

Despite that, your photos are lovely and I very much enjoyed exploring the city.

From 1608 to 1759, as been the French period...
From 1759 to 1867, as been the English period...
From 1867 to now...the Canadian period...

So Quebec City is the child of a French women maried whit a English man born and living in North America....

haha love it!

If you go to take photos of Ste-Foy area, near the bridges, where there is like a second downtown, you will see that Quebec city is also very american, in a ugly way, unfortunately.

Thanks for the tour

It "looks" European compared to the typical North American city... because it's basically the oldest North American city.

Stone buildings from the 1600s and 1700s is the closest thing to "looking European" you'll find on this continent. That's what triggers the feeling. But if you're just back from Europe... it won't look European to you.

As was said in the post right above mine, though... the only thing that really does look old is the downtown core, with its hilly cityscape, fortifications (with several streets passing through gates), and tiny little stone-paved alleys.

Ste-Foy (arguably the city's main business district these days) looks like your typical North American bland-ish/clean-ish suburb.

BTW, great pics -- you managed to make it look good even in the very worst season of the year. That's worth praise! ;)

(On the other hand... if your goal was to make the city look as European as possible in your pics, that weather was just perfect.)

Its the stone and the narrow streets that give it that European feel. Most of the Americas don't do that, at least not that well.

Even the Vieux Carre in New Orleans doesn't (more New World Caribbean flair)

If we built with stone on the west coast, our entire cities would collapse after a good earthquake ;)
