The world's second-highest skyscraper will be built in Yongsan, central Seoul, by 2013, city government officials said Thursday.

The Seoul city government has approved a plan by the Korea Railroad Corp. to build the 150-story building inside Yongsan's envisioned international business complex, they said.

The corporation said it will soon collect applications from civilian bidders for the construction of the 620-meter skyscraper on the site which is currently being used for train maintenance and railway logistics.

The building will become the second-highest after the Burj Dubai, a 830-meter-tall building currently under construction in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

A 261-meter apartment and commercial building called Tower Palace is now South Korea's highest building. However, two taller buildings -- the 610-meter Incheon Tower in the western port city of Incheon and the 555-meter Lotte World II amusement park building in Seoul's Jamsil district -- are being planned.

"The city allowed the construction project because it is unlikely to hurt the landscape of nearby Mount Namsan and goes well with the nature of the international business complex to be created in Yongsan," a city official said, requesting anonymity. "The construction of the Seoul landmark will greatly contribute to luring foreign tourists and investment."

This should be moved into the Proposals section for now. Korea seems to be going mad for supertalls.

Sounds convincing but any proposal coming out of Korea also sounds bogus. They never came through with anything they bragged about. Maybe this one is for real but I'm reserving the right to believe it only when construction ACTUALLY begins.

I'd like to see a render of this. Hopefully it goes.
