This year's Juno Awards are in Saskatoon, and I am getting pretty excited about all the shows this weekend.
Do you plan on watching?

CTV will air the Junos at 7 ET just so it could have the Amazing Race at the prime time slot. That's when you know the Juno's is pretty shitty when a reality tv show takes priority. That means CTV is forcing Saskatoon to air live at 5 pm.
I thought they happened in January??

Wow, I did not expect that everyone was ‘too cool for the Junos’. I agree that in the past the show has sucked, but recently it has got better imo. Regardless of the show, the whole weekend here in Saskatoon has been great. I got a chance to see a few shows and the atmosphere out on the streets and in the clubs has been awesome. I am sure other forumers whose cities have hosted can say that it is a great weekend for that city.

I'll agree it's created a nice buzz about town, primarily via the plethora of intimate shows in small venues. The TV part holds no appeal to me whatsoever, and I'll be taking a pass on it.

God, I hate to agree with vid, but I was actually going to post the same thing. Nelly Retardo's early work was at least melodic and catchy and she seemed to be one of few popstars with a real interest for music. Then comes her latest hit, Promiscuous.

The only thing more annoying than sucking up to Canadian musicians that make it big in the states is parading Canadian musicians around that don't make it big like some sort on anti-American folk hero.
How about we just reward those that are talented. There's a couple of them.

well, Nelly Furtado was the best artist in that show, and she's hot (apart from some wardrobe mulfunctions :haha: ... a blue electric dress, geez)... what is pathetic are all those fake punk/rock bands, so terrible and fake, disgusting; and did you hear the lyrics? Nickelback lyrics are joke, and then there was one retarted blond guy singing "i've been in Saskatoon, i've been in Colorado"... oh my God so hilarious:whip:
Anyone see Air Farce on Friday? They parodied Nickelback, it was just guys dressed up to look like them repeating "I've got nothing to say, I've got nothing to say" It's funny cause it's true.

From watching the reports on Canada AM this morning, you'd think it was a Nelly Furtado special. 5 out of 7 awards for her, plus she hosted it? talk about overkill.
As a side note, Ben Mulroney needs to be beaten with phone books.

I'm pretty bitter that Sloan lost out on "Best Rock Album" to Billy "effing" Talent. K-os was right -- the Junos are propaganda!
Sloan didn't lose, they just couldn't afford it.
Stanzmastertron3000

I'm sure Sloan picked up some Juno's when they were popular, which was a pretty long stretch. Almost all of the '90s. Billy Talent are mediocre, but they managed to get some arm waving American adolescents attention, so they are better by Juno standards.

* 1994, Nominated, Best New Group
* 1995, Nominated, Best Alternative Album (Twice Removed)
* 1997, Won, Best Alternative Album (One Chord to Another)
* 1999, Nominated, Best Rock Album (Navy Blues)
* 2000, Nominated, Best Album Design (Between the Bridges)
o Nomination went to Catherine Stockhausen and Lee Towndrow
* 2002, Nominated, Best Rock Album (Pretty Together)
* 2002, Nominated, Best Single ("If It Feels Good Do It")
* 2007, Nominated, Best Rock Album (Never Hear the End of It)
One freaking win.
Yes but it's the Juno's. Who cares? They're shit anyway. Their music is good, and that's all that counts. These awards shows are just autofellation by record companies to sell more by putting more stickers on the cover of their albums that says the artist is "award winning". It means nothing.

If by "popular" you mean when they were also playing on regular top-40 radio, then I guess you're right. Nonetheless, "Never Hear The End of It" is an incredible rock 'n roll album. 30 tracks, 74 minutes of pure songwriting and auditory genius. It's easily their best effort since "Navy Blues" or "One Chord To Another". And Billy Talent? They think the meaning of rock 'n roll is to strap on a black armband and jump around like convulsing monkies.
Billy Talent... funny how shit bands have shit names.

TORONTO (CP) - Looks like Miss Marple beat up on the Juno Awards on Sunday night.
CBC-TV's new Miss Marple mystery "At Bertram's Hotel" - which aired at 8 p.m. ET - had 1.03 million viewers, the public broadcaster said. Over on CTV, the Juno Awards, which aired from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. ET, grabbed 912,000 viewers.
Global's "The Simpsons" - which aired at 8 p.m. EDT-meanwhile, also managed to pull in more viewers than Canada's premier music awards show with 966,000 viewers.
All numbers are from BBM Nielsen.

Wow, I did not expect that everyone was ‘too cool for the Junos’.
People who enjoy music became "too cool for the Juno's" because the Juno's became too cool for real music. It's all about American buzz to them, in particular the most dumbed down MTV/celebrity culture aspect of it, and that's a slap in the face to both the nation and music lovers.
And I don't understand your comments either, vid. Exactly one year ago you were defending Nickelback against the exact same type of comments you're now making. It's not worth pointing out how terrible Nickelback are if you still listen to their offspring like Theory of a Deadman.
Anyway, the Juno's did something right giving Broken Social Scene an award last year. But again, they've got a huge buzz going on outside the borders, so despite being good, I'm not so confident that they would have gotten Juno recognition based solely on that, for fuck askes.

What I have not heard is any suggestions on how the Juno's would be improved, aside from Sloan actually winning more than one Juno..... Would a show full of Bands that hardly sell any records anywhere make the Juno's better? Would fans of "real" music then start to tune in?

You sound just like vid, circa last year. Let me guess. Anything that isn't elevator music aimed at the masses like Celine Dion or Nickelback is now considered obscure, right? What you hear on Kiss FM and Much Music (in this decade at least) is not even close to a representation of what's going on in music or culture. A band can be popular without having been name dropped on TRL. Sloan have sold tons of albums in Canada and have had one of their albums voted the best record ever made in Canada. That's hardly obscure. Broken Social Scene are one of the most popular bands in the "indie" scene, receiving critical praise from almost everywhere, landing gigs on Conan and such. Again, what the hell is obscure about that? Awarding these bands would help promote the good art we have to offer. Nickelback are SLAMMED by critics and music fans alike, but we give them all the attention because millions of aging women in the States swoon over them. So it's either about money or a giant inferiority complex. Either way, it's not about music.
