Cool, thanks for the pics.

I see a tower crane, what's being built I wonder?

^^The crane looks to be for a building of 5 or 6 storeys, most likely residential. They're still working on the foundation. I would have included a construction picture, but I forgot to recharge my camera battery before this trip, so I had to choose my shots carefully. Actually these are all the shots I got except three that didn't look good. Unfortunately the camera totally ran out of juice before I could get some pics of the new Toyota plant being built on the eastern outskirts of town. After stagnating for many years, the new auto plant is already starting to spur growth in Woodstock.

only been through on the train. thanks for the tour. incidentally, those s-w towns really do have a specific look don't they? maybe it's the yellow brick.

wow... goodlooking downtown. some really great buildings. Looks clean, like the town has cleaned it up recently. I only think of the Woodstock sprawl, will have to get downtown next time. thanks

I enjoyed seeing this thread. One of my ancestors lived in the Woodstock area after the American Revolution (since he was loyal to the British), so that's the only Canadian maple leaf on my family tree.

It looks like it could be in West Virginia or Pennsylvania except that area lacks the large hills we have.

Looks nice. Love those old buildings in there.

This block seems rather long. Or it looks like that.

Thanks for the replies. I've driven through Woodstock a thousand times and I've always been impressed with its architecture.

The yellow brick is really common everywhere around London. There are some towns that are almost entirely yellow brick, like Glencoe. Houses, churches, downtown strip, industrial, all yellow.

I think there's a sidestreet hidden in there somewhere, but downtown Woodstock basically is just one really long strip, if you turn off the main drag you're pretty much not downtown anymore.

Wow, beautiful place. I love the brick architecture.

I particularly liked this one. Was there ever anything in those recesses, such as tile work? Love it!

While the downtown does have some nice old buildings (looks like the coffee shop is in the best shape), I'm more impressed by the churches and govt (?) bldgs. Thanks for the tour flar.

The government buildings are nice, particularly the third picture, which is the County Courthouse. The Library also has great details and is in perfect condition. The very last picture is the Armoury, which is a military building. Almost every town in Ontario has an armoury that looks like a castle.

I REALLY want to know what is up with the Capitol Theatre there. I want to see the inside of it. Badly. Is it actually abandoned or just really run down looking?

^^thanks for the info xtremeleafan

@matt602, I think the capitol is empty, but it looks to be well sealed so hopefully the inside is being preserved.

Lots of potential here. Too bad Americans and Canadians (those in Ontario, at least it seems) have all but abandoned most of their downtowns for those bland suburban malls and office parks. These old downtowns are so much more appealing in so many ways.
