Probably some time around the end of the year, supposedly two months to finish the transfer floors which started a couple weeks ago, so about the end of the year. It'll be noticeably growing in January for sure...
Probably more like within the first trimester of December, barring any incredible stints of bad weather.

You did fine. I don't think the post office would make a good casino though. It's much too large. Plus, any Chicago casino would be better placed near McCormack Place to fleece the conventioneers rather than local citizens. I'd have to agee with Smith that it should be torn down.
There were some subtle swipes at Trump, both the man and the building at the end of the show. I take it Kamin doesn't like what he sees so far, but seems grateful that Smith has been able to "tame it down" a bit.

BTW (and I know this thread is going off topic but where else could we discuss an interview with Adrian Smith but in a thread on one of his buildings):
Someone named Butler called in to the show. The name seems familiar, and he mentioned the magic term, "supertall". Is he a Skyscraper Page forumer?
It's too bad no one could have plugged this forum on the show to increase general awareness of and appreciation for the current skyscraper boom in Chicago. To those who called in: Did the call screener specifically request that no websites be plugged or did you just not think to mention the forum?

Hi all, I don't post much in this forum b/c not much to add as you all cover the site here more than I see it in person and I work right next door!!! Anyhow, I have been on the fence about design and glass (as others have been) however, today I was walking down Wabash and was amazed when I took a second to look up. I am not sure if it is the design of the building, but from the Wabash view, this thing actually appears to me to be taller than it actually is. As example, when looking at IBM, while a nice building, "Tall" does to pop into my mind. However, when I look at TT, despite that it is still slightly shorter than IBM, it looks absolutely enormous!
Is this maybe some sort of optical illusion b/c of the design or glass? I am not sure it is something that can be captured on camera, but maybe I'll try next time I am over there.
And to think, this thing is what, half its full height? I feel like I won't be able to see the top when it is done. Amazing.

Love it or hate it, TTC is a part of Chicago from now until far into the future, well beyond our lifespans. I dont believe its an eyesore, but its also not an iconic masterpiece, as is the Spire or classics like Sears or JHC. Its simply a respectable supertall in a prominent location, and it adds to the architectural diversity of an already great city. Lets see how this one stands the test of time. In any case, the hard work of the engineers, designers, ironworkers, and other players who made this project happen should be given praise for a task well executed.

^ Maybe because in your (as well as my) opinion, it looks spectacular from some angles, and rather uninspiring from others. I get this with Sears, 900 n michigan, 311 wacker, and it might happen with the spire for me personally. It's all a matter of opinion, but there sometimes is a general consensus on these things. I don't care for TT in some angles, but most angles are good and some are simply incredible, and it's just the nature of architecture I suppose. Everyone has a different opinion about each angle of each building. Overall, I love this building a lot, but just like Sears it has some awkward yet still intersting and compelling view points for my taste.

yeah, there was that OWP&P 2,000 ft. design that the trib published the day before 9-11, but by that point in time, they were already out of the running. it looked like a giant green toothpick. i never saw the original SOM 2,000' scheme, but allegedly the very first SOM scheme released to the public way back in november of 2001 was simply the 2,000' design with the top 900 or so feet lopped off, hence the ridiculously stumpy proportions ("the trump stump").
then there was that adrian smith presentation at the AIC in which he showed a lot of renderings of different design ideas they were initially exploring for the 2,000' version, but they were just slides on a projector, i don't think anyone here ever got their hands on hard copies of them.

Long time lurker. Third time poster. Somebody, either in this forum, or in one of the general Chicago forums did take photos of two of the three possible 2000 foot Smith designs for Trump's Tower that were shown at the talk that Steely referenced. They also took and posted a photo of a painting of Smith's massing concept for the building. I don't recall who posted them though. (Victor?) It would have been posted around June 10, 2004.
I have them and could post them if some laxity were conceded about crediting the source of the photos (or the original poster could just repost them).
Oh, and in my humble and uninformed opinion, the designs in question were very bleh, but I imagine that Smith would have improved them over time just as he did with the version that was actually built.

yeah, there was that OWP&P 2,000 ft. design that the trib published the day before 9-11, but by that point in time, they were already out of the running. it looked like a giant green toothpick. i never saw the original SOM 2,000' scheme, but allegedly the very first SOM scheme released to the public way back in november of 2001 was simply the 2,000' design with the top 900 or so feet lopped off, hence the ridiculously stumpy proportions ("the trump stump").
then there was that adrian smith presentation at the AIC in which he showed a lot of renderings of different design ideas they were initially exploring for the 2,000' version, but they were just slides on a projector, i don't think anyone here ever got their hands on hard copies of them.
I would still like to see the TTC in its 2000' iteration, even if it sucked. Anyone have a link, or a rendering? :haha:
