Looks like they got a little excited and covered the columns a bit too early. Just like the installed the canopy glass too early and now have to cover it.

I don't think they installed some of the elements too early. If they plan to open the hotel soon they are going to what a certain level of polish. Granted the scaffolding over the entrance way is not that visually appealing, but the guests can at least walk through sections of the hotel that are 'done.'

The Bat Cave.
But seriously - there's a large network of underground roads throughout the Loop, and 3 levels in Illinois Center, that are used for delivery access, garbage trucks, etc.
(If you watch the last Batman movie or the new one coming out, the Bat Cave is down there as well :) )

It is at least partially a love hate relationship. I'll go into this with B-vics reply. I pride myself on being able to take good photographs. Being an out of towner, its hard to get SolarWind's dawn shots or Harry's minute byt minute Spire updates, but its in my intereste to try to present anyhting I photograph in a positive light. I just was lucky to be there when this was going on. I love to show the real scale of these buildings.
But...I took this one just for you. :) Reflections between Trump and IBM. There is a clear DIFFERENCE in quality. I thought this was especially noticable in the low cloudcover where the reflective properties of Trumps glass were lost and it appeared very thin and plasticy. Overall, the glass has some great properties that help to save the building, but it is lower quality than I would like for a project of this magnitude.
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e399/delta2094/041.jpg
I don't think it's so secret anymore... It's like we're the Minneapolis police and Alliance is Larry Craig. No covering up his love for Trump now.
I did tap my foot under the construction fence.
So, I'd really like to know your conclusion on the study you did.
The Trump-IBM relationship is undeniable. I really wish I could ask Smith what his purpose was with the cladding: if it was an homage to Mies or an attempt to evolve a form of modernism into the 21st centruy. It may be a mix of both, but the I wonder, since the Burj cladding is so similar, if he was trying to put Chicago in Dubai or just doing what he would have done anyway and trying to promote it by building next to Mies. Anyway, it is a wonderful building in this context. The Wrigley and Marina setbacks are BS to me, but I think the IBM one is spot on and a major asset to the building.
Regardless, I never think the primary judgement of a building should rely on contextualism, whether the environmental contextualism of the setbacks or the physical contextualism of the modernist cladding.
Some of Trumps other major assets? Many people have mentioned the massing on the lot. I agree with thin. The building, for the most part fits very nicely in its location. I just have a problem with the East side. The parking garage is HUGE and i really wish it had been scaled back and another building built in between Trump and Wrigley. Nothing spectactularly tall, but a 600-700'er to bridge the gap and fill in some of the blank space. I think the multi-layer riverwalk will be a real asset (though it is a bit overzealous), but could have served another future development as well.
The stainless is impeccable. End of story. Especially with 700'-1000' cloud cover (according to Chicago's finest measuring posts) while I was there, they weren't glaring and provided some real character and texture. I think they really highlight the facade which is probably the finest we've seen in Chicago in a while barring the excessively distortive plasticity quality of the glass itself. Other than that, the color, the reflectivity, the spectacular range in moods of the class, and the stainless accents all are a great package.
Now, my negatives (besides the glass). The vents. I feel I know exactly what Smith was trying to do with the vents, but I really think he blew it on this one. Part of the beauty of Mies is that the vents were entirely subtle. A small and discreet change in function, texture, and structure. Trumps vents aren't as discreet and while they're placed in the correct position, they REALLY sever the building into segments and really interrupt the flow. They're not so bad when one section is setback form the other, but in other areas, they really do damage.
I found that the building in quite wonderful in small pieces, but as I continue to step back further, I just don't get it. I still think there are too many setbacks, horizontal and vertical, (while one might look great in a picture) that, when combined with the vents, give it kind of a stacked block and half-assed kind of feeling. Its as if Smith tried to throw a slight element of deconstructivsm into the building and I think it just falls flat on its face. The rounded ends are just screaming to me to be a massive airfoil shape...especially from the East. Instead, its broken into three sections that are off-center from each other. I have some of the same issues with Sears, so wtf do I know. Its just my personal opinion that large iconic forms like JHC are more successful. I just don't get, if Smith really is going for a neo-modernism, why he would clutter the building's form in this way.
That being said, the building definitely is growing into its own since when I last saw it in August. The proportions of the building are making more sense and its becoming more vertical. I look forward to seeing it again next Spring. Though, then we have the spire...and don't even get me started on that.
Overall, knowing Smith's intent would really help me form my opinion on this building, because he seems to have contradictory aims. There are CLEAR positives to the building. City wide, it is providing an excellent cap to many streets, and I've already mentioned other pluses. However, despite the positives, I still find myself saying "but" too often to really give it an above average review. Trump isn't going to be a harmful addition to Chicago (except for the spire), but I'm not yet ready to put it in my starting line-up or fantasy league. My jury is still out, but my opinion is improving.

This business about 'reflective quality.' I don't get it.
Does the reflective quality of the glass have any real impact on the structure of the building? Is this a standard aesthetic dilema that architects and engineers must deal with? Or is this an artificial construct of the skyscraper fanatics of this particular forum?
Is judging a building by how well you can see other buildings in it, necessarily a good thing?
I know that some architects take the time to angle the glass perfectly, so they reflect perfectly... AKA Mies Van der Rohe's Seagram's Building in NYC.
I think this building is great. I think judging a building by it's reflecting ability is a moot point. Why don't people point out the fact that the Trump relates perfectly to it's surroundings. It's facade and rounded corner create a perfect blend of the Marina Towers and the IBM Building.

I think as it has been said in this forum before, the quality of the reflection has little to do with engineering or architecture. It is a materials choice. and the reflection in Trumps glass is noticeably more wavy than other buildings...more importantly other "high end" buildings. Something that could have been remedied regardless of design.
I don't find it that noticeable, but when comparing sided by side with other buildings there is a very clear difference.

The argument is, if you're going to use reflective glass, it should have high reflective quality.
If you don't want to pay for a high grade of glass, then don't make it reflective.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but what is with the deep blue glass that lines the top of the first set back. I just noticed it yesterday, and a quick look at pictures from the past couple days don't seem to show it.
It is apparent in solar winds photo above.
I assume it is just a rail of sort, but is it going too stay this deep blue or may it just have a film on it now?

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but what is with the deep blue glass that lines the top of the first set back. I just noticed it yesterday, and a quick look at pictures from the past couple days don't seem to show it.
It is apparent in solar winds photo above.
I assume it is just a rail of sort, but is it going too stay this deep blue or may it just have a film on it now?
I took this picture on Dec 26. I think they just put a protective cover on it. Maybe they're still doing work up there.

Correct me if I am wrong, but it looks like it is for the outdoor lounge area that is part of the restaurant. Instead of using a rail they used glass for better astectics.:sly:

Wondering if anyone is around TT b/w 11:00am - 11:40am. Sitting in my office next door and hearing a whole lot of noise (more that I have heard in recent memory) sounds like pounding. Anyone know what is going on?

Very good :haha:
Just walked around for lunch, it is a site behind my office on Grand. Can't tell exactly what they are doing there...seems to be something going up in the front yard of some office building.

Is that 505 N State? I passed by there last week, and there was already sheet piling in the ground in a corner of the lot.

As always great shots harry.
I know Trump has been higher than IBM for some time now, but I see it from ground level every day/most of the pictures are from up close. This long shot gives a great perspective of how just how tall Trump has gotten so far.
...should be above the united building in days.

Nice shots. I was at that spot on Monday night and thinking, "Damn, I wish I had my camera". I was there at night and it was clear and just beautiful. I think the bridge over the tracks at that station provides one of the best views of the skyline.

Yep. Love the pics Harry. This tower is beginning to take on a new dynamic as the floors above the recent setback begin to climb.
Also, right in from of Legacy, the most elusive tower in Chicago. ;)

If they wanted to go balls to the wall and build the slabs as quickly as possible, what is the quickest schedule they could work on.
Could the concrete cure enough in 24 hours that they could technically do a floor every other day?

The schedule is limited not so much by concrete curing (the forms & shoring handle loads) it's about the vertical & horizontal forming, MEP's in the slabs, & rebar.
Walsh has done at least two high rises on a two day cycle. The Columbian was one of them.

Definitely starting to take it's place in the skyline.
And that's probably the highest a construction crane has been in Chicago in 8 years. (Park Tower)

Beautiful photo. BTW, a little known fact about Chicago is that the building on the right is the home of Lyon and Healy. Recognized as the best harp makers in the world. Who would have guessed in Chicago?.... butchers, railroads, and ...harps?

Bvics Photo really shows how Trump has begun to take on an entirely different life and nature since they washed the glass and have begun to light the interior with regular instead of construction lighting. Its really made the building come alive.
If you thought Trump looked shiny before, if you see it in person now it is absolutely spectacular!
