Actually, that photo was an extreme telephoto shot. The naked eye would never see TTC or any of the other buildings there as being so close. Nice thought though - hopefully the NBC Sports zoom lenses would capture this perspective occasionally...

(For comparison, look at brian b's photo above from Fullerton, which is only 2.5 miles north of TTC. In contrast, Washington Park is probably 7 miles south of TTC.)

Yeah, I stitched four photos together. Here's one from June which I don't recall posting. I think it's a little better. I didn't have to deal with an internal window reflection and the lens distortion wasn't as bad on this one. I probably should consider buying a wide-angle. Right now I'm only shooting with the lens that came with my camera.

Something interesting that I've noticed now, as in the nice photo above, is that Trump almost always registers without doubt as the second-tallest in the city. I suspect this is due to the fact that it statistically loses real elevation thanks to the raised entrance off of the Wabash bridge (although of course AON suffers from the same).

Does anyone recall off-hand what is the difference in height between the river walk and the Wabash entrance?

Almost 25' I believe...

Isn't the Sears Tower similar as well because there's a lower Wacker Drive?

honte
Aug 6, 2008, 7:45 PM
^ Thanks. Of course you're right that Sears has the same "issues". I don't think the offical height would have been measured from the secondary entrance on Franklin, yeah? (...although I think you could make a legitimate argument to do so.)

Well, then I guess my theory doesn't hold up, since Aon's height difference and Trump's are almost the same. In fact, I think the difference for AON is probably greater.

:haha: Trump didn't reserve any space for his personal Penthhouse.:jester:

It was on the market for a long time with an asking price of approx. $25 million. There were no buyers so Trump, trying to be Trump and to put a positive spin on this failure, announced he was going to live in the penthhouse. I think at the time he was hoping that by the time the unit is ready for closing he would find a buyer for it. I can make a bet that he will dump this penthhouse the first chance he gets.

O I must have been given some bad info then. But I am not so sure he would give it up that easy. I mean Trump is known for having a place to live in alot of places...I cant really see him staying in one of his hotel rooms whenever he comes to town to visit! Lol

Trump is known for a lot of things and greed is one of them. If he was to get an offer for $25 million or whatever he now thinks is a good price for the unit, he would accept that offer in a blink of an eye, even if it meant evicting his own mother out of the penthouse if she was still alive and was living with her dear son in the windy city. :notacrook:

It is not like he lives in Chicago for a few months or weeks out the year. To him, the windy city is just another location for one of his towers.

Well the 0.5 mile difference in distance is not exactly irrelevant.

I knew that would be the answer, but standing underneath Trump looking up causes much more back pain than standing underneath Big Stan and Big John. The thousand footer 2PRU looks like it's about 775 ft standing right next to Big Stan and we are only talking about 120 ft difference in the two buldings. Distance is relevant but, Dang, I aint exactly blind. :haha:

Looks good, jstush. Is that a vertical pano? Noise tends to congregate more so in the blue channel, which is why you'll see it in the sky like that.

I did not know that about blue. I wonder why...

and yes, it is a vertical pano. That software basically works perfectly. It is quite amazing :)

Simply a stunning tower. Trump has done magic to the Chicago skyline.

I know it's a little bit late in the game, but I have a couple of suggestions for design changes if The Donald happens to stumble upon this forum:

-Looking at the pictures of what it looks like now as opposed to the renders, I think they should just continue the current top floorplate to the roof rather than add another setback or those round floors. It looks pretty friggin' sweet the way it is.

-The cranes have grown on me to a point where I think they should use JHC-like twin masts instead of that spire.

...........I know this is a bit of a technical question but .......how are they going to anchor the spire ? ...in Bvic's rendering (a few posts back) ..it look "thick" enough to catch a lot of wind and it's very tall....it looks like someone just superglued it to the roof .........just curious......

Here is just what i think.

1. Well chicago has two many skyscrapers with twin spires its just to much if trump does it too

2. The last setback is the best part in my book i have been waiting to see it. But we will see how it turns out

3. Sadly i dont think trump knows that this forum is even here.

But they were great ideas!

Too much twin spires? Only the Sears Tower and the John Hancock Center isn't it?

its not just them its also AT&T center

And two supertall in the skyline with twin spires is more then enough.
If trump did it too it would be way too much.

I disagree. Tiwn spires/antennas (whatever you want to call them) are one of the signature aspects of the Chicago skyline.

On this building however, I like the single spire concept better. I just happen to think it works for this particular building.

That is also what im trying to say.
And it would be too much if trump had it.
It just would not look good even if chicago is known for it. Its just over doing it.

Actually no building in Chicago has twin spires. JHC and Sears has anteannas.

Dude, its got 4...thats not twins...its 4.

A horrible idea. Asymmetrical buildings don't get symmetrical tops. Thats called disjunction.

We are getting very near the end of construction now. Does anyone know when the spire is due to be erected?

the spire's not going to go up all as one giant thing... it'll be erected in pieces... and the final transfer section is not finished, and then there are the technical floors still above that. i'm sure bvictor or someone familiar with the construction schedule probably knows when to look for it.

but seriously, alliance... i don't understand why you're so antagonistic to everyone.

Question: Does Trump own this lot east of the tower that they've been using as a staging area? If so, what's the plan for it? If not, are there any proposals for it?
