now that we can see a good chunk of the building with its facade, does anyone want to predict at this preliminary stage whether this one will have the magic to join the architerally elite residential skyscrapers in our city (hancock, lake point tower, marina city)? is this building mostly remarkable just for it's extreme height and highly visisble location, or is there that extra special something going on here?
i don't have definite answers to these questions; i keep waivering back and forth.

Its not an earth shattering inovation of design like the other buildings you mentioned; however, this building is pretty remarkable in its concrete structure (it will be tallest in the city, upon completion) and its contextualism is a strong design statement in a building of this size.
I think this building will be among the elite upon completion, but I feel CS will steel all the thunder away from this one.

Which is why Trump's next building (if he makes one) will be that much better, to "fight" against the Chicago Spire.

it's a nice building, with a solid design, but I don't think it's iconic by any stretch of the imagination. In any other location, it would have been just another really big glossy building, and probably not stand out much other than fot its height and bulk (Water Tower Place comes to mind as a building that fades into the background due to its design, despite its large size).
But since Trump has one of the most visible and high profile locations in the city it's kind of inevitable to look at it (in the same way it's almost unavoidable that you look at Park Tower when you are around Lake Shore Park). It'll certainly be one of the buildings you remember, but I don't think it'll be one that people really love. In my opinion the design doesn't spark the imagination the way the John Hancock or Marina city buildings do. Doesn't mean it's a bad design at all, like i said, it's a solid building, but doesn't quite rise above the architectural pack (which is admittedly hard in a who's who of architecture city like Chicago).

OMFG!
ANYONE who ever said or even thought a negative thing about TTC needs to take a hard look at this ... and let out a huge sigh of relief.
Seeing the tower cranes now from Grant Park is a real joy - and they are popping up in a few very surprising places. The tower is also starting to really have an impact on the Courthouse district of River North. That area is going to feel much more urban and enclosed when TTC is finished.

Nothing revolutionary, just a Zelig that serves the site and broader context well. To my eye the most revealing aspect is the effect on Mies work. The IBM building finally has a partner it can muscle up against. Bertrand's towers contrast well but don't bring the testosterone and the Sun Times looked like it already had been stomped by its neighbor.
I suppose the additional height still could muck it up but I can't see it.
I do have concern that the bad winter wind at State and the river will be turned it into a flash freezer with the addition of a super tall.

I am abslutely in love with this building. The old barge-like Sun Times was out of place and did little to "stir men's blood." Yes TTC is big. But what fuels my passion for this building is that you are never really looking at it. To gaze upon it is to see Chicago reflected in it. The mirrored clear blue sky and the old literally reflected in the new is what makes it remarkable.

I agree, the coolest thing about TTC is that it is essentially a gigantic inhabitable Bean in the way it reflects its surroundings not only literally, with the glass, but architecturally in every way shape and form. I think TTC is remarkable just for its chameleon effect, its not every day (or perhaps even never) you see a building do what TTC does with its surroundings. TTC is very close to being perfectly contextual, I mean it already reflects the weather and its only 1/5 done.

My take on this building ... no, it is not a breakthrough design ... it is rather conservative, yes it benefits from both its location and its size .... but it is being done to absolute perfection. It's kinda like what the Japanese have done with all the widgets invented in other countries.
This building is magnificent in how it complements its surroundings and I am just amazed at how it reflects the mood of the environment.
I also believe this building will stand the test of time. I don't know that people looking at this building 40 years from now will be able to categorize it as a style that is representative of buildings built just after the turn of this century ... unless it is a victim of copycats (including Trump himself). Now, that can be good or bad. I personally have an affinity for building from the 20's and 30's but 80's style buildings are just ... yuck.
Even if you could identify it for a particular style or time period, being the biggest and the best is not a bad thing and may just qualify it for iconic status. Remember that there are 3 Empire State Buildings ... the big one that everybody knows about and then two mini-me versions (obviously not name ESB) by the same architect.

i'm really interested to see how the condo prices at Trump will hold up after 10, 15 years.
Especially those hotel condos.
While it's certainly possible the investors buying them will do well for themselves, in a non-resort market like Chicago, I'm a bit concerned they may end up being lemons.

Well if one would take the long term view on the hotel-condo investment and can wait until and most importantly after the 2016 Chicago olympics than their chances of getting a better return will be realized. But this, olympic bid, is not a given and those units are rather expensive to make such a risky bet at this time for, I would expect, a modest difference in return.

Yeah maybe it is not going up a floor every 7 days but I am amazed at the complexity of the lattice work on the transfer floor. And it seems they have the cladding on a new floor every 4 or 5 days or so. That's some good progress too.

I really love how it changes color, depending on the angle, and what not. Its almost not even the same building. What great shots...

As the only view I have of TTC is this forum and the TribCam, did my eyes deceive me or are we starting to move up from the transfer floor already? Coulda swore I saw it this evening on the cam.

I actually think the reflection off TTC provides ambient light to parts of Wabash. The nearby blocks will save on their electric bills.

Its almost like a giant version of those mirrors they have in Battery Park City in New York. Maybe this could be another way to sway the NIMBYS to support a project!

I think the reflection helps the overall area of this tower. Most buildings would not be nearly this reflective. So they would dampen the light and make the area even darker. This one brings the sunlight to the street.

I wonder will 300 Lasalle or 353 clark block the light that right now lights this up so heavenly?

300 N LaSalle won't block any sun that IBM isn't already blocking.
353 N Clark will to a degree, in early spring and late fall. But in the summer when the sunset point is in the northwest, 353 will shadow IBM and Marina City, not Trump.

Can someone tell me if you can see the photos I added on posts #94 and 95? That was my first attempt at posting photos here. I can see them all but someone above mentioned they are getting red X's.
Also, if someone could recommend a web host that will allow me to post larger and higher resolution photos, I would be happy to give it a try in the future. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the tip. Hate to be a nuisance, but I'm trying to learn and will probably be able to provide better photos later. Can you see them now (on #94, 95)?
