Criggion transmitter was built in World War II as one was afraid that Rugby VLF transmitter, which was of great importance for transatlantic communication
and submarine communication would be attacked by German aircrafts. ( This never happened, but in 1940 its antenna was nearly coompletely destroyed by heavy iceloads).
After World War II it was used for submarne communication and also used for the development of Omega Navigation System. Criggion transmitter had a very special antenna. It was a wire network, fixed on 3 self-supporting towers, 3 guyed masts and a rock anchor ( http://www.oswestry-history.co.uk/criggion/images/vlf-aerial-layout.jpg ).
On April 1st, 2003 it was officially decommissioned and in August 2003 the towers and masts were demolished by explosives.
