WestJet and Korean Air to Launch Codeshare Service
by JL
2nd Update 1220GMT 14MAY12
Skyteam member Korean Air starting 31MAY12 will begin codeshare service with WestJet, becoming the 3rd Asian carrier engaging in codeshare partnership with Canadian low-fare/full-service carrier.
Application for the codeshare service was submitted to the US DoT on 03MAY12 and received approval on 07MAY12. Similar application to Canadian Transport Agency was approved on 16APR1
For YEG it will codeshare from LAX and YVR
That should help strengthen the LAX route, however flying through YVR would be the best for timing.

Notice on my way out of YEG for Whitehorse yesturday moring that cladding has been installed on the south side of the tower at about the 4th floor. Doesn't look bad.
The Hotel is looking bland. Where is this colour we see on the renderings.
PS flights into Whitehorse this year are increasing, Swiss air is now coming in along with Condor. WJ has put on 2 flights out of YYC to take advantage of the German flights. There are also increasing numers of German tourists flying through YEG to head north.

Keep in mind the Condor and Eidleweiss air charters are pretty much strictly used by German and Swiss tourists going to the Yukon for tour company packages. I'd think the number of "connecting" passengers would be near null. Also I believe the Condor flights also continue onward to Fairbanks Alaska.

May 15, 2012, 6:33 PM
Why hello there, superior attitude checking in. ;)
Are the charter flights into Whitehorse even bookable by Canadian citizens? Or are they just sold as part of a tour package by agencies over in Europe?
YYC had the same scenario years ago when both JAL and Korean had charter flights here in the summer, only about 2-3 years ago did Korean open up the summer flights to Canadians to book like a regular flight (perhaps testing the market a little). Other than that one summer it was all pre-booked flights sold only in Japan and Korea to their citizens.
dansk
May 15, 2012, 8:17 PM
They are bookable to Canadians. I was in Norway last year, and we flew from YEG - LHR and our family from Whitehorse flew on Condor to FRA and then connected to OSL.

May 15, 2012, 11:16 PM
I have said it before and will say it again. Edmonton has to market itself and make itself appealing for visitors to want to come here thus more flights. We are supposed to be the gateway to the north and those planes landing in Whitehorse should be landing here as the jumping off point to the North.
Airboy
May 16, 2012, 1:02 AM
Reason the germans come up to WH is the vast wilderness. Yes we should be promoting travel into YK but you would get flights directly into YK from Europe.
Last summer the number of Euro tourist on my flights to YK we quite significant. most heading to the fishing lodges.
First flights to WH start next week. As well Crews passengers start arriving ( Holland America owns the hotel I'm at) by the end of the month. Just not this week, apperently there are 8ft drifts across the road from a snow storm north of Scagway.
If we had a direct conection to Frankfurt I could see the numbers being quite high.

May 16, 2012, 3:01 PM
I agree with rocket to a degree. Good proper marketing would imply flights to YEG then offer onward connections to Whitehorse, Yellowkinife etc (both popular in the summer months with Europeans). Yellowknife would be a better a sell as the airport currently cannot handle anything much larger than a 737 at the moment. You could possibly increase loads on the flights (although I hear they are pretty full.)
ANA offered Tokyo-Edmonton Flights as (northern lights charters) some years ago using 747-400's with passengers then connecting onward to Yellowknife.Seems like a great idea if you can catch niches like this.
There was some talk just a couple of years ago that regular charters from China were being seriously considered by a Chinese airline (China Eastern) and a Chinese tour operator but they never materilized....
On a side note it looks like the new WestJet/Thomas Cook partnership will be boosting capacity atleast on the Cancun sector from several Canadian cities including YEG from the number of increase applications put forward to ASUR.I will be interested to see what other sunspots are added and from what cities.

Tuffy any news on the future airport in Tulum? Will ASUR be running this airport? I'm assuming this airport is being built due to interest from many airlines and the Mexican tourism industry. Here's hoping for a YEG-Tulum nonstop in the near future.
The project is moving ahead although there is alot of debate about who will manage the airport. i would say ASUR is the most likely candidate but the details are still be worked on in preperation for another bid.
The area for the airport is already being cleared and will use a single runway and have a single terminal with between 8-12 gates and a few remote stands. Its anticipated it will handle 3 million passengers in its first year of operation and should have very little effect on Cancun International airport.
I can see a large number of Canadian and U.S flights operating to the new airport for those who chose to stay in the Tulum/Akumal south Riviera Maya area resorts. The runway will be able to handle aircraft upto the 747 and will be A380 capable (unlikely to see A380's). The airports enviromental impact is also strongly being put into consideration for both noise and vibration in consideration of the nearby Archiological sites and is rumored that it will have restrictions on certain aircraft types such as the 727 and older generation 737's.

New airport features aim for better first impression of Edmonton

EDMONTON — The opening of the new Canada Arrivals Hall gives a warmer welcome to international and U.S. arrivals, say Edmonton International Airport officials.
The latest stage of the airport’s Expansion 2012 opened this week with the first phase of an expanded Canada Border Services Agency area.
Officials hope three works of art and decoration — a light-refracting sculpture hanging from the ceiling called The Raven, a wall of musical dancing lights beside the moving sidewalk and a living wall of tropical plants — will give foreign travellers a better first impression of Edmonton before they go through customs.
“We wanted to create something special for people arriving in Edmonton, or even Canada, for the first time,” said Paul Garbiar, vice-president of infrastructure and technology for the airport, during a tour of the facility on Thursday.

A little off topic, but funny (wierd funny, not haha funny) nonetheless. When I linked to this, I started looking up other airports in Canada, such as YHM (Hamilton International Airport). This website incorrectly refers to YHM as Toronto Hamilton International Airport. :koko: YYZ (Toronto International Airport) and YHM, as I'm sure all of us are aware on here that they are two distinct and separate airports, and wish the person composing that website would clue into that too!

I have been informed that NATO have got rid of all their 707's now...they are meant to lease in 757's, when required. Could it have been an E-3 at all?
Nothing has arrived as of this morning, although the Luftwaffe A310 came and went.

On my back from Whitehorse today. A couple of observations - both the tower and hotel are really coming along, the passenger traffic is noticably higher than last month, while changing in YVR half the flight into YEG was chinese nationals heading here. Also noticed quite a large number of passengers waiting for 747. and the arrivals baggage area really needs some changes to make it more efficient.

After having traveled out of YEG a couple times this month, I like how the control tower's shaping up. The hotel's looking not too bad, but the alignment of some of the punched windows look weird. Given Edmonton's winters I really do hope they put in some form of fully enclosed (and heated) walkway between the hotel and the terminal before the hotel opens.
The long roller table does help to speed the security process up, since some people may take a bit longer than others to get their metal objects and electronic items and liquid stuff sorted out in the trays. The security lines can get long, but at least they move steadily. I was told by a man in suit, whom I think works for CATSA, that YEG was one of two airports in Canada being trialled for use of the long tray roller.

Secure Flight requirement of US Transportation Security Administration (TSA)
The following flight is affected by new regulations of the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requires you to provide your full name, date of birth, and gender for the purpose of watch list screening, under the authority of 49 U.S.C. section 114, the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 and 49 C.F.R parts 1540 and 1560. Please be so kind and visit Lufthansa.com at your earliest convenience to enter the required data to your booking. You can retrieve your reservation on Lufthansa.com/My bookings with your last name and booking reference and follow the link to "Add immigration and visa data".
Please enter the required data no later than 72 hours before departure in order to avoid cancellation of your reservation. Further information on the TSA "secure flight" requirements can be found on www.tsa.gov.

Three well-known Edmonton businesses will open a full-service business aviation terminal Wednesday at Edmonton International Airport.
Airside Properties Inc. is a collaboration between John MacNutt of the Sawridge Group of Companies, Glenn Woolsey of York Realty Inc., and Aurora Jet Partners, a company owned by Don Wheaton, Kim Ward, Daryl Katz and Ledcor.
“Air traffic to northern Alberta, especially to the oilsands region, is increasing and traffic at Edmonton’s International Airport is increasing with it.” said Matt Woolsey, York Realty general manager.

Off topic I know but: the new BER Airport is a wee bit behind schedule. But then it is a mega project. I like the idea of Airport City being created in front of the main terminal - shops, hotels etc.
The link below also has a pdf brochure of the stunning simple architecture being used. Glass everywhere....roofs and walls. Amazing. The plans for expansion are set already and it opens at low end of its capacity of up to 5M with expansion terminals (30M now travel between 3 airports). General Aviation on site for business as well as Government. Only 2 runways. I can not wait to fly into BER. Or is it Willy Brant or is it Berlin Brandenburg Airport? Actually all 3 but travellers will know it only by the IATA call letters: BER

What is up next for renovations or expansion after the Control Tower is operational? I don't see anything that provides a look at their Capital Plan posted on the EIA website.

There’s some asbestos abatement and a couple of mechanical upgrades for the north hold room. But nothing major yet.

There are quite a few big server rooms on 7 IIRC, tonnes of IT equipment in that tower.... We knocked in several Lieberts a few years back.... I wonder if they are planning on moving all that gear ? It would be a big job, likely not worth doing if the tower is remaining as-is

I would expect the new HVAC would be incorporated in the new design. The Leiberts will be reused somewhere else. Emerson could take them and sell them as reconditioned units.
Saw something that looked intriguing today. A notice for redevelopment and expansion to YEGs arrivals and mezzanine area. I take it this is in the original terminal area.

I'm more curious about the relocation of all the data equipment. I was involved in a pile of server relocates for Telus, and that's a huge undertaking, as everything home-runs to the switches in the server rooms.
I suppose the obvious answer would be another data room in the new tower and fibre patch them together

Regretably I can't say. It was while I was in a Large Cosulting firm today.

^Stantec by any chance?
They might as well just do a major renovation to the entire existing old terminal. That thing is a disgrace.

I agree. And I would like to see the configuration that is planned for LRT access built into the terminal. Will that be possible?

Also a heads up that Russias open skies aircraft will arrive at YEG on Thursday for a overnight stay. Not everyday you get to see a Tupolev TU-154 in Canada or North America for that matter!

I would guess that it is taking photos. Not sure if the treaty lets them do much else (might record radar activity and sniff the air for radioactive particles).

The TU-154 was Russias answer to the western Boeing 727 although slightly larger and more powerful. Its part of a treaty to openly monitor the west and the U.S also has a aircraft for similar purposes (a modified 707.)
The aircraft is currently at CFB Trenton but begins its journey mid week this week.
Russia has also added a second aircraft in this role, the TU-214 but the 154 will be used for this ''Mission''.
