Qantas' 744s are getting very tired-looking (QF9 and QF30 two weeks ago and last year). Always had a great flight (love landing in a 747 - "shadoomp") on Qantas, but roll out those A380s s'il vous plait.

not sure I'd agree with that. Certainly the 1989-1996 deliveries may be showing their age but the latest batch from 1999 on are barely broken in.

Let me add to the fun if I may with some of my own! This is easily my favorite widebody out there just because of the history and the legacy this plane has in aviation. No other airplane can compare to it IMO. Still today, a strong model for Boeing and a proven aircraft in the industry. Here in Nashville we see daily service on China Airlines Cargo B744 and the occasional charter cargo flight or ferry flight for winter storage.

Nice photos!

I would like to get a seat in the upper floor. Does someone know if there is an airline that offers economy class seats in the upper floor?

I used 747 many times but the upper floor seats seemed to be always reserved for first or business class.

All the carriers that I know of that use the B747 have the upper deck reserved for First Class or Business Class seats. I don't know of any that have standard Economy up there.

You need to come to Japan if you want economy on the upper deck. And even then you need to get on a 747-400D. Tokyo Haneda - Sapporo New Chitose, Naha (Okinawa) and Fukuoka are your best bets.

Not that I can hold a candle to Lexy's photos, but I'll play along :)

The daily Air France between Paris and Montreal has economy on the upper deck. I was lucky to be on it once. Well, most of all I was lucky to snag a bulkhead -- otherwise it's standard 3/3 seating, feels like a much shorter 737...

Interesting. I wonder if they still do this? How long ago was it since your flight big T?

Thx in advance.

Urb, nice shots as always man. Japan is the place to be to see some good "Heavy" action on a daily, and almost hourly, basis. You lucky dog you. LOL!!!

It was in August 2005. I'm pretty sure they still do it -- and I believe they put 2 such daily 747s on the CDG-YUL route during the summer peak season.

Also, I've been on AF 747s on the CDG-LAX-PPT route numerous times back in the 90s, and I got upgraded to business once, which was also on the lower deck. I could see the front cabin was first, so it may indicate those were also configured with economy on the upper deck (though I've always been in the back section when flying Y, and I wasn't curious enough about aviation to ask back then).

One thing I forgot to mention about my upper deck experience: it was incredibly quiet! YUL-CDG is quite a short flight, but on a real long haul op it must make a hell of a difference.

I like JAL's new paint scheme! The NASA plane looks like an ex-Pam Am craft with that blue strip painted along the windows.

Great pics, BTW!

The 747-123s operated by NASA in SCA configuration are actually ex-American Airlines.

Haha! I guess aircraft change hands quite a bit these days.

Wouldn't know it by the way it looks though.

That's probably because NASA has had them since the late '70s.

AA's livery hadn't been painted over yet when they were doing the static testing with shuttle Enterprise in '78.

Air France has removed First Class (Premiere) from their Trans Atlantic service and relocated Affaires (Business) to the front of the main deck. Tempo (coach) now occupies the upper deck. I had booked an Affaires seat MIA-CDG last year and didn't learn of the switch until I arrived at MIA. Such a disappointment as I love flying on the upper deck...its quiet, few people in the aisles, and it feels as if you are in glider.

I agree that the 747 is by far the best looking airliner ever designed. The A380 is an ugly, blulky white elephant. I don't think there's much of a market for it. The largest 747 holds almost as many people as the A380 and it looks soo much nicer. Also, the 747 still holds the world weight lifting record even as several other cargo planes have been built for that purpose but failed to overtake the boeing.

Lets not forget that Airbus, as a company does not even break even. If it weren't for it being largely substidized by the their govenment they would not even be in business at all.

As far as I know, the 747-SP is still the longest range airliner in circulation, longer range than any of the larger planes designed for its competition.

Also Boeings repuation for quality is on a much high level. A boeing plane has never crashed due to mechanical faliure, whereas airbus has had various problems throughout its existence.

Thoughts...
