Troutdale Mayor Paul Thalhofer on Tuesday told a tram company that "you've thrown a lot at us here" after it proposed using the city as the starting point for a system of aerial trams made from recycled airplanes and powered by solar and wind energy.

Milwaukie-based Mass Tram America hopes to build wind turbines and solar-panel structures from Troutdale to Mount Hood. They would be used as power and infrastructure for a tram system that would carry passengers and freight -- ultimately nationwide.

Company representative Julie Mikalson presented the project to the council, saying Troutdale is the "gateway to the metro area" and high winds make it appropriate. The company asked for "an agreement to explore feasibility," Mikalson said. It hopes to have the city's endorsement as it approaches funding-application deadlines at the end of the month.

Councilors questioned whether wind energy was feasible with the city's frequent high wind speeds and predicted public outcry about 200-foot turbines. The council asked the company to come back with a Troutdale-specific business plan.

The company proposes making tram cars from decommissioned Boeing 747 airplanes stripped of their wings. Artist renderings and details about the tram can be found at http://thehighwayinthesky.us. The company has not yet built a prototype.

Every unit operates independently of the system, and is fixed to a track with a specific route, making danger of terrorist activity low compared to our current aviation system.
yah but how fast does it go
edit: oh nevermind although that is still a little slow
Mass Tram America travels at speeds of 100-200 mph, significantly decreasing travel time.

awesome
but nothing screams 1950s futuristic transport than this

as much as i'd love to see this i guarantee it will not pencil out technologically, economically or politically

Comical. Also, just to nitpick, those are not 747s.

When I first saw the article in the Willy week, I said 'yea right.'

I still say that... it's going to cost more than $4 million a mile to suspend a 50+ ton airplane at 25 mph, let alone 100+ mph.

Didn't our tram tower alone cost something around $10 million?

Anyways, they've had overhead monorails for quite some time now (1901). Not that much different than an overhead cabled system, really...

I first saw it in the movie Der Krieger und die Kaiserin (The Warrior and the Empress) - same guy who did Run Lola Run.

Sounds Awesome but I don't think it will ever happen. To much 1950's! The rendering looks like it is a bit dated with a old Boeing 707 or something around that age. 737 would work better since they are ligher, but 100mph?...on Clean energy?...:haha:

Once the company gets a $50 or $60 million from interested partys then the doors will be locked and they will be out of the country.

^the news last night said the company had some option to purchase two retired 727 airplanes...I'm doubtful this could happen. If they started off with a basic prototype and went green later, I could see the possibility. It seems like by trying to accomplish too much at start up, they might have stacked the deck against themselves...
